      23 декабря в своем доме в Северна-Парк (шт. Вирджиния, США) в возрасте 84 лет скончался бывший инженер компании Westinghouse Electric Corp. Стенли Лебар (Stanley Lebar). В 1960-х годах он создал по заданию NASA фотокамеру, способную работать в диапазоне температур от 250 градусов до минус 300 градусов по Фаренгейту. Именно этой камерой пользовались в июле 1969 года Нейл Армстронг (Neil Armstrong) и Эдвин Олдрин (Edwin Aldrin) во время первой высадки на поверхность Луны.

Battle of the Heavy Lift Launchers – Monster 200mt vehicle noted


2010 will mark a number of key decisions for NASA, not least the potential switch from the current Ares I/V architecture to an alternative mix of commerical crew launch – accompanied by a new heavy lift workhorse. A decision is expected to be announced early in the new year by President Obama, although at least three heavy lift vehicles – including a huge 200mt vehicle – were still being classed as options ahead of the Christmas break.


That uncertainty is palpable in the Shuttle Program, with some managers – rightly in most cases – avoiding NASA politics with regards to direction on issues such as extending the shuttle program. However, some managers continue to state shuttle extension is no longer possible, citing lead times on "new" external tanks, such timelines that are based solely on a 2015 extension of the program, a scenario that adds flights past the hypothetical STS-137.


An extension of the shuttle program – as stated by the Augustine Commission – would only be viable if the follow-on vehicle is a true Shuttle Derived (SD) LV. Two examples were presented to the Augustine Commission, one which is based on a side-mount option – called the SD HLLV (Heavy Lift Launch Vehicle) – and another called the Jupiter LV.

The SD HLLV – or HLV for short – has received a large amount of attention from the SSP, who have been tasked with the bulk of the evaluations. Those evaluations have resulted in meetings with the Langley Research Center (LaRC) and NASA HQ in Washington, DC – ahead of key "face-to-face" meetings with MSFC.

The reactor itself is about the size of a big wastebasket. The whole thing would fit into an 18-wheel trailer with room to spare and would weigh about the same as an armored humvee.....

The A-3 Test Stand being built to test the next generation of rocket engines at NASA's John C. Stennis Space Center will mark several construction milestones in 2010:
 - Begin installing the stand's test cell and diffuser.
 - Install the liquid oxygen (LOX) and liquid hydrogen tanks atop the test stand.
 - Receive and install the remaining five chemical steam generator water tanks.
 - Start installing the gaseous nitrogen bottles for use with the chemical steam generator.
 - Install a 66-inch water valve and piping between the delivery system  - connection and the existing water system.
 - Construct the lower Signal Conditioning Building (SCB).
 - Construct the test stand's shop building.
 - With the structural steel framework completed, installation of the test cell and diffuser is the next major task to complete on the test stand. The test cell and diffuser will enable operators to simulate altitudes of up to 100,000 feet, using a series of chemical steam generators to create a vacuum.

Я транслитом пользуюсь и не жалуюсь. Однако перевести с нюансами трудно, и есть опасность что всякие львы форума станут придираться к погрешностям перевода, вместо тодо, чтобы обсуждать предмет разговора.

Ну вот например, сенатор Нельсон сказал по поводу конца Арес 1:

"I think he will continue the development of a vehicle -- whether it's an Ares test vehicle or call it something else -- as the precursor to a heavy-lift vehicle that will get us out of low Earth orbit for NASA's next missions," Nelson said.

то есть

Думаю, что он (Обама) продолжит разработку носителя -- называйте его "Арес экспериментальный" или как угодно -- как предтечу тяжелого носителя, который вынесет нас из низкой орбиты Земли для следующих миссий НАСА.

Следующий постинг - можно ли переводить vehicle как "носитель", и понеслась. А капут Ареса 1 будет забыт.

(P.S. Нельсон председательствует над сенатским комитетом по науке и космосу, ну то есть он решает сколько денег дать и какие программы разрешить).

В настоящее время это почти требование - профессиональный ракетчик должен владеть английским :( . Правда, не просто так, а для доступа к действительно огромному массиву информации, которая или только на английском доступна, или на английском просто более доступна, чем на других языках. Если угодно, сегодня английский - lingua franca :) . Pun intended...
