Mars has long been believed to have been cold, dead and dry for aeons, but there is now striking new proof that not only was Mars a relatively warm and wet place in geologically recent times, but that even today there are vast reserves of water frozen beneath the planet's surface. As well as casting fascinating new insights into Mars' past, this discovery is also forcing a complete rethink about the mechanisms of global planetary change and the possibility that there is microbial life on Mars.

David Harland considers the issue of life on Mars in parallel with the origin of life on Earth. At the time the Viking instruments were designed, it was thought that all terrestrial life ultimately derived its energy from sunlight, and that the earliest form of life was the cyanobacteria with chlorophyll for photosynthesis. It was assumed the same would be the case on Mars and that microbial life would be on or near the surface that the Vikings had sampled.

No sooner were the results from the Viking instruments in, than it was discovered that there was an even older type of microbial life on Earth when, in 1977 'black smokers' were found in volcanically active parts of the ocean floor, at depths of several kilometres. Removed from sunlight, these archaea (literally, 'the old ones') live off the minerals released by the hydrothermal activity. Subsequently our view of life was further revised when 'extremophiles' were discovered thriving in acidic, salty, alkaline, very hot, very cold and radiation soaked environments previously considered lethal. Although the Vikings had found no sign of organics, and the surface was extremely hostile, suggesting that life had never gained a foothold, the discovery of microbes living far beneath the surface of the Earth raised the possibility of life below the surface of Mars, where there may be water-ice and/or hydrothermal activity. Perhaps, because the microbes were beyond the reach of the Vikings' instruments, the negative result was premature.

Following the negative tests for biological activity by the Vikings, NASA – in the belief that Mars was once warm and wet, as the erosional features on the surface suggest – decided to 'chase the water' in the hope of establishing that conditions on Mars were once suitable for life, although this would not prove that life had developed. The targets selected (from many) were what seemed to be an outflow channel, a dry lake and a patch of minerals emplaced by hydrothermal activity. In 1997 Mars Pathfinder landed in an outflow channel where it released the small Sojourner rover to perform chemical analyses of nearby rocks. NASA followed up in 2004 with the much larger Mars Exploration Rovers, which were equipped to act as mobile field geologists. One was landed in what seemed to be a dried up lake bed inside a crater, and the other set down in an area that a remote-sensing orbital survey had identified as haematite, a likely indicator of hydrothermal activity. Both of these missions have yielded evidence that conditions were once conducive to the development of life.

In parallel with these NASA projects, the European Space Agency developed the Mars Express remote-sensing orbiter, which has detected traces of methane that may have been released by microbes. If microbial life is found on Mars, will it be based on DNA? Will this indicate that life developed independently? Or that it has characteristics in common with the most ancient forms of terrestrial life? If life is found on two planets in the same planetary system, this would favour the panspermia hypothesis. And if martian life is radically different, then in light of the discovery of planetary systems around other stars, this would, as remarked by Philip Morrison of MIT, "transform life from the status of a miracle to that of a statistic". These are all questions that the exploration of Mars for life are aimed to answer.

In the 1960s and 1970s deep space missions were dispatched in pairs in case one was lost in launch or failed during its journey. Following the triumphs of the Viking landings on Mars in 1976 and both Voyagers spacecraft successfully surveying the outer giant planets of the Solar System, it was decided by NASA to cut costs and send out just a single probe.

Although Magellan successfully mapped Venus by radar, it suffered from problems during the flight. Then came the loss of Mars Observer, whose engine exploded as it was preparing to enter Mars' orbit because it was using technology designed for Earth's satellites and the engine was not suited to spending several months in space. Later came the high-profile losses of Mars Climate Observer and Mars Polar Lander - a consequence of the faster, better, cheaper philosophy introduced by Dan Goldin in 1993. Even the highly successful Galileo mission suffered a major setback when its high-gain antenna (also based on satellite mission suffered a major setback when its high-gain antenna (also based on satellite communication technology) failed to deploy fully, greatly diminishing the craft's radio transmission capabilities, forcing the ground crew to re-programme the on-board computer to enable it to fulfil its mission and provide stunning images of Jupiter and its moons.

In Space Systems Failures, David Harland (here working with co-author Ralph Lorenz) describes the many quite fascinating tales of woe involving failures of rockets, satellites and deep space missions in his inimitable style, providing a unique insight into the trials and tribulations of exploration at the high frontier.

The joint NASA-ESA Cassini-Huygens mission is a splendid example of how international cooperation can produce a wealth of scientific return that could not be afforded by the programs of any partner alone. НОВАЯ КНИГА СЕРГЕЯ ХРУЩЕВА

14 апреля наше предприятие посетил Сергей Никитич Хрущев. Работая с 1958 года в отделе систем управления, Сергей Никитич принимал непосредственное активное участие в создании систем управления комплексов крылатых ракет, их летной отработке на полигонах, внес заметный вклад, как в развитие ВМФ СССР, так и в создание Стратегических ядерных сил страны. В числе работников нашего коллектива он был удостоен звания Лауреата Ленинской премии (1959г . ) и звания Героя Социалистического Труда (1963г . )

В последние десятилетия Сергей Никитич Хрущев написал несколько книг о своем отце, Никите Сергеевиче Хрущеве, в которых, наряду с интересными событиями и фактами из жизни страны и её руководства, правдиво и доказательно показана напряженная и плодотворная работа нашего предприятия по созданию самых передовых образцов ракетно-космической техники.

В этом году вышло новое произведение С.Н. Хрущева: «Трилогия об отце», которая состоит из ранее опубликованных, но переработанных книг «Пенсионер союзного значения», «Рождение сверхдержавы», а также новой книги «Никита Хрущев: Реформатор». Трилогия издана (М.; «Время») тиражом 2000 экз. Общий объем трилогии – 1976 страниц.

7 апреля Гуманитарный и политологический центр «Стратегия» пригласил ветеранов и молодежь НПО машиностроения на встречу с С.Н. Хрущевым, посвященную презентации его «Трилогии об отце».

В назначенное время в старинный особняк (работы знаменитого архитектора Ф.О. Шехтеля), где размещается центр, организованно прибыл «реутовский десант». Было заметно, что Сергей Никитич тронут вниманием и поддержкой своих давних коллег: А.И. Бурганского, А.В. Туманова, В.А. Поляченко, А.Я. Петрунько, С.А. Альперовича, А.Н. Кочкина, И.П. Ильина, А.Н. Фесенко, В.И. Уткина, З.Ж. Жафярова, В.П. Шаронова, Г.Г. Плавника, В.И. Юхновца, И.Ф. Куликова и других.

Около двух часов шел разговор «о времени перемен». Запомнилось выступление Г.Э. Бурбулиса: откровенно и с горечью признав провал реформ 1990-х годов, он отдал должное многолетней борьбе С.Н. Хрущева с предрассудками и стереотипами политической конъюнктуры, за понимание сути тех политических и экономических преобразований конца пятидесятых – начала шестидесятых годов, которые были начаты его отцом.

В завершение встречи от коллектива НПО машиностроения выступил А.И. Бурганский. Следует отметить, что для многих присутствовавших, особенно молодых журналистов и политологов, профессиональная деятельность С.Н. Хрущева на нашем предприятии явилась откровением. Сильное впечатление произвели эпизоды «быта» при испытаниях ракет на подводных лодках: сын лидера страны – и «как простой инженер»?.. Именно такие примеры из жизни позволяют прочувствовать «ритм эпохи», понять, как перенесшая страшную войну страна в кратчайший исторический срок смогла превратиться в великую мировую державу.

На встрече с С.Н. Хрущевым 14 апреля Генеральный директор - Генеральный конструктор ОАО «ВПК «НПО машиностроения» А.Г. Леонов зачитал текст Диплома о присуждении С.Н. Хрущеву премии имени академика Владимира Николаевича Челомея: «Решением Научно-технического совета ОАО «ВПК «НПО машиностроения» от 16 июня 2009 года №1 за книгу «Рождение сверхдержавы. Книга об отце», удостоенной Первой премии в конкурсе научно-технических работ на присуждение премии имени академика В.Н. Челомея в номинации «За освещение роли предприятия и его основателя В.Н. Челомея в деле укрепления обороноспособности страны в научно-техническом аспекте», присуждается почетное звание «Лауреата премии имени академика В.Н. Челомея» с вручением медали имени академика В.Н. Челомея Хрущеву Сергею Никитичу» – и вручил Диплом и медаль.

Выступивший затем Почетный Генеральный директор – Почетный Генеральный конструктор Г.А. Ефремов отметил, что премия символично носит имя академика Челомея, хотя вручается и присуждается она уже после его ухода из жизни, коллективом нашего НТС. Он подчеркнул, что премия эта идет от всех тех, с кем Сергею Никитичу приходилось работать, и кто продолжает работу, начатую в те годы.

Герберт Александрович также обратил внимание собравшихся на то, что в книге «Рождение сверхдержавы» очень правдиво, объективно и доказательно, на основе документов, показана особая роль нашего предприятия в деле укрепления обороноспособности страны, что крайне важно, особенно для наших молодых людей: единство коллектива, единство его прошлого, настоящего и будущего.

Затем Г.А. Ефремов выразил надежду на дальнейшее сотрудничество с С.Н. Хрущевым по созданию совместного труда о вкладе Никиты Сергеевича Хрущева в оборонную безопасность нашей страны, где, в том числе, были бы отмечены и многие другие работы, проведенные нашим предприятием.

В ответном слове, вручая свою трилогию Генеральному директору – Генеральному конструктору А.Г. Леонову, С.Н. Хрущев сказал, что ему очень приятно передавать эти книги руководителю НПО машиностроения, потому что он по-прежнему считает себя реутовцем и будет считать так до конца дней. Это его родное КБ.

Затем состоялась встреча Сергея Хрущева с сотрудниками предприятия, с его коллегами по работе в те далекие годы. В Ситуационном центре на столе были разложены ранее приобретенные книги трилогии, и Сергей Никитич надписал их теплыми словами. После воспоминаний о былых делах, трудностях и радостях участники встречи сфотографировались на память.

Такие события позволяют еще раз прочувствовать и оценить тот огромный труд, благодаря которому наше предприятие стало признанным лидером в оборонной промышленности страны.
