Barrie W. Jones "The Search for Life Continued: Planets Around Other Stars"

Springer Praxis, July 2008 | ISBN : 0387765573 | PDF Format, 283 pages | English | 10 MB
ЦитироватьBarrie Jones addresses the question "are we alone?", which is one of the most frequently asked questions by scientists and non-scientists alike. In The Search for Life Continued, this question is addressed scientifically, and the author is not afraid to include speculation. Indeed, the author believes beyond reasonable doubt that we are not alone and this belief is based firmly on frontier science of the most imaginative kind.

The author concentrates on planetary systems beyond our own but starts with life on Earth, which is the only life we know to exist, and which provides guidance on how best to search for life elsewhere. Planets are the most likely abode of life and so we start the quest with the search for planets beyond the Solar System – exoplanets. The methods of searching are outlined and the nature of hundreds of exoplanetary systems so far discovered described. In the near future we expect to discover habitable Earth-like planets. But are they actually inhabited? How could we tell? All will be revealed.

This full color book is written for everybody who wants to stay in close contact with the latest on possible life on other planets.

I have noticed that some forum members don't know facts about space stations programs of the past times. I'm not sure what is the reason... lapse in memory or bad education. Anyway link I posted is a sort of Reader's digest on the subject in English.

That's not really a great way to "reeducate" about space station history. This report was good in 1995, but it's pretty antiquated now.

Is there any "specific" points you would like forum members to "remember" correctly?

Well Reader's digest is what it is. It's purpose is to give general guidelines or information about something. Who wants to understand the matter better will have to read much more. I  agree it is old report but it is also made by respectable source (NASA). I wouldn't want to trash this tread with specific mistakes I have read here and there on the forum. If necessary I can do that too but see no point as Russian speaking members are generally faster then me in noticing and correcting them. As I'm unaware of comparable book in Russian I believed this one might help to reduce the number of those mistakes. Point wasn't about reeducation but more like raising general knowledge level in some young novice who still isn't sure should he "jump into field" or not. And you are right Capt. David in a way this book speak more about NASA's knowledge about former USSR space station program up to that point.

W. David Woods "How Apollo Flew to the Moon"
Springer Praxis, January 2008 | ISBN : 0387716750 | PDF Format, 432 pages | English | 6.5 MB

ЦитироватьOut of the technological battlefield of World War II came a team of gifted German engineers and designers who developed the vengeance weapon, the V-2, which evolved into the peaceful, powerful Saturn V rocket to take men to the Moon. David Woods tells the exciting story, starting from America's post war astronautical research facilities, that used the V-2 for the development of the robust, resilient and reliable Saturn V launcher. He describes the initial launches through manned orbital spaceflights, comprehensively detailing each step, including computer configuration, the role of ground control, trajectory planning, lunar orbiting, separation of the lander, walking and working on the Moon, retrieval of the lunar astronauts and returning to Earth in this massive technical accomplishment.

Philip Harris "Space Enterprise: Living and Working Offworld in the 21st Century"
Praxis | English | 2008-10-24 | ISBN: 0387776397 | 620 pages | PDF | 14,2 MB

ЦитироватьFor over a half century, human activities in outer space have increased, but the high point was the Apollo Moon landings from 1969 – 1972. Now the United States has set forth a national space policy to return permanently to the lunar surface by 2020, and NASA is engaged in strategic planning to accomplish that goal. Furthermore, Europe, Russia, Japan, China, and India are undertaking missions to the Moon and its vicinity. All this will lead to using our sister planet as a space station and launch pad to Mars and other celestial bodies.

In SPACE ENTERPRISE - LIVING AND WORKING OFFWORLD, Dr Philip Harris provides the vision and rationale as to why humanity is leaving its cradle, Earth, to use space resources, as well as pursuing lunar industrialization and establishing offworld settlements. As a management/space psychologist, Dr. Harris presents a behavioral science perspective on space exploration and enterprise. In this his 45th book, Phil has completely revised and updated the two previous editions of this classic, placing new emphasis on the need for more synergy and participation by the private sector. He not only provides a critical review of what is happening in the global space community, but offers specific strategies for lunar economic development. The author analyzes the human factors in contemporary and future space developments, especially relative to the deployment of people aloft. This user-friendly volume offers numerous photographs, diagrams, exhibits, and case studies. Easily readable, as well as useful as a reference work, the book's content covers a wide range of practical considerations related to human activities offworld. To live and work successfully in a microgravity environment, the author examines human performance and organizational management, as well as physical, psychological, political, commercial, legal, and other dimensions.

Ben Evans Escaping the Bonds of Earth: The Fifties and the Sixties
Praxis | 2009 | ISBN: 0387790934 | 464 pages | PDF | 16,2 MB

ЦитироватьTo commemorate the momentous 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's pioneering journey into space on 12th April 2011, a series of five books – to be published annually until 2011 – will explore this half century, decade by decade, to discover how humanity's knowledge of flying, working and living in space has changed..
The first volume of this series will focus upon the 1960s, exploring each mission from April 1961 to April 1971 in depth: from the pioneering Vostok flights to the establishment of the first Salyut space station and from Alan Shepard's modest sub-orbital 'hop' into space to his triumphant arrival at the Moon's Fra Mauro foothills almost a decade later.
The Introduction sets the scene with early plans to explore space, balloon flights and such details as the development of pressure suits. Each of the Vostok missions is then covered in depth, together with unmanned precursor flights, subsequent plans and the development of Voskhod. Chapter 2 studies the Mercury missions together with unmanned and monkey flights, the development of the Redstone and Atlas boosters and the ill-fated Dyna-Soar, while the twin Voskhod missions, including the first three-man space crew, first spacewalk and plans for subsequent Voskhods to extend time in space are covered in the third chapter.

Martian Outpost: The Challenges of Establishing a Human Settlement on Mars
Автор: Erik Seedhouse
Издательство: Praxis
Год издания: 2009
isbn: 038798190X
Количество страниц: 304
Язык: english
Формат: PDF
Размер: 17.4 Мб

ЦитироватьMartian Outpost provides a detailed insight into the various technologies, mission architectures, medical requirements, and training needed to send humans to Mars. It focuses on mission objectives and benefits, and the risks and complexities that are compounded when linked to an overall planet exploration program involving several expeditions and setting up a permanent presence on the surface.
The first section provides the background to sending a human mission to Mars. Analogies are made with early polar exploration and the expeditions of Shackleton, Amundsen, and Mawson. The interplanetary plans of the European Space Agency, NASA, and Russia are examined, including the possibility of one or more nations joining forces to send humans to Mars. Current mission architectures, such as NASA's Constellation, ESA's Aurora, and Ross Tierney's DIRECT, are described and evaluated

The Apollo Guidance Computer: Architecture and Operation (Springer Praxis Books / Space Exploration)
Author(s): Praxis
Publisher: Praxis
Date     : 2010
Pages    : 430
Format   : PDF
Language : English
ISBN-10  : 1441908765

ЦитироватьThe technological marvel that facilitated the Apollo missions to the Moon was the on-board computer. In the 1960s most computers filled an entire room, but the spacecraft's computer was required to be compact and low power. Although people today find it difficult to accept that it was possible to control a spacecraft using such a 'primitive' computer, it nevertheless had capabilities that are advanced even by today's standards.

This is the first book to fully describe the Apollo guidance computer's architecture, instruction format and programs used by the astronauts. As a comprehensive account, it will span the disciplines of computer science, electrical and aerospace engineering. However, it will also be accessible to the 'space enthusiast'. In short, the intention is for this to be the definitive account of the Apollo guidance computer.

Frank O'Brien's interest in the Apollo program began as a serious amateur historian. About 12 years ago, he began performing research and writing essays for the Apollo Lunar Surface Journal, and the Apollo Flight Journal. Much of this work centered on his primary interests, the Apollo Guidance Computer (AGC) and the Lunar Module. These Journals are generally considered the canonical online reference on the flights to the Moon. He was then asked to assist the curatorial staff in the creation of the Cradle of Aviation Museum, on Long Island, New York, where he helped prepare the Lunar Module simulator, a LM procedure trainer and an Apollo space suit for display. He regularly lectures on the Apollo computer and related topics to diverse groups, from NASA's computer engineering conferences, the IEEE/ACM, computer festivals and university student groups.
