Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) has discovered the root cause of a premature engine shutdown during the company's first paid cargo flight to the international space station in October, but the Hawthorne, Calif., rocket and spacecraft maker does not plan to make the results of its months-long investigation public, a company executive said.
"We're doing one of the final out briefs on the most probable cause for the engine issue with [NASA international space station program manager Michael Suffredini] later this week," SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell said Dec. 11 at a Washington Space Business Roundtable luncheon here. "We're not going to release what we found but I think we've got a good most probable cause identified. The data supports that."
One of the nine first-stage engines on SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket shut down prematurely 79 seconds after liftoff Oct. 7 at the start of an otherwise successful space station cargo run. The only publicly released details about the engine failure so far come fr om a statement SpaceX put out the day after the launch, which boosted the company's Dragon cargo capsule toward the station.
"We know the engine did not explode because we continued to receive data from it," SpaceX said in an Oct. 8 press release. "Our review indicates that the fairing that protects the engine from aerodynamic loads ruptured due to the engine pressure release, and that none of Falcon 9's other eight engines were impacted by this event."
Josh Byerly, a NASA spokesman at the Johnson Space Center in Houston wh ere the space station program office is located, had no immediate comment Dec. 11 about SpaceX's investigation.
SpaceX has at least seven launches on the manifest for 2013, including the debut of the Falcon Heavy from the company's new West Coast launch pad at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif.
The current Falcon 9 features a 3.6-meter fairing uses nine Merlin 1-C liquid oxygen and kerosene-fueled engines, which are less powerful than the Merlin 1-D's SpaceX has been testing at its McGregor, Texas, rocket facility. The first NASA mission in which a Falcon 9 with Merlin 1-D engines will be used is a space station cargo run now scheduled for July, according to an internal NASA manifest.
Before that mission, which would be SpaceX's third for NASA under a $1.6 billion Commercial Resupply Services contract awarded in 2008, the company plans to launch three commercial payloads with the upgraded Falcon 9. However, Shotwell said, there is no contractual requirement for SpaceX to test the upgraded Falcon 9 before using it to resupply the space station.

Orbcomm и SpaceX обновили условия контракта по запуску 18-ти орбкомовских спутников на двух Фальконах. Его стоимость составит $42.6 млн., на $4 млн. меньше прежнего.

ЦитироватьPONTE VEDRA, Fla. — Satellite messaging service provider Orbcomm has renegotiated its 18-satellite contract with Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) and will now pay $42.6 million for the launch of "up to" 18 Orbcomm satellites on two SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets, Orbcomm said Dec. 27.

The price is $4 million less than that announced in the original contract, concluded in 2009.

Fort Lee, N.J.-based Orbcomm said the two companies have agreed that the launches will occur between April 2013 and June 2014. If either side is more than six months late in performing its tasks under the contract, it will make penalty payments to the other, Orbcomm said in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Under the 2009 contract, valued at $46.6 million, Orbcomm and Hawthorne, Calif.-based SpaceX agreed that the 18 second-generation Orbcomm satellites would be launched aboard smaller Falcon 1e rockets.

SpaceX has since suspended production of Falcon 1e to concentrate on the Falcon 9 vehicle.

Orbcomm officials have told investors that the company fully expected to amend the contract with SpaceX to provide for two Falcon 9 vehicles.

A Falcon 9 launch in October carrying a prototype second-generation Orbcomm satellite suffered the loss of one of its first-stage engines. The principal payload, a SpaceX Dragon cargo vehicle headed to the international space station, was successfully placed into orbit and completed its mission.

The Orbcomm satellite was dropped into a too-low orbit and re-entered Earth's atmosphere. Orbcomm has said ground teams were nonetheless able to test the satellite's functionalities sufficiently to proceed with plans for the full 18-satellite constellation.

Orbcomm said it would take an $11 million charge as a result of the loss of the satellite, and would file a $10 million insurance claim.

Below is a sel ected section of SpaceX's launch manifest. Now, review it carefully; there will be a quiz.

NASA Resupply to ISS – Flight 2   2012   F9/Dragon    Cape Canaveral
ORBCOMM – Multiple Flights   2012-2014   Multiple   Cape Canaveral
MDA Corp. (Canada)   2013   Falcon 9   Vandenberg
Falcon Heavy Demo Flight   2013   Falcon Heavy   Vandenberg
SES (Europe)   2013   Falcon 9   Cape Canaveral
Thaicom (Thailand)   2013   Falcon 9   Cape Canaveral
NASA Resupply to ISS – Flight 3   2013   F9/Dragon    Cape Canaveral
NASA Resupply to ISS – Flight 4   2013   F9/Dragon Cape Canaveral
NSPO (Taiwan)   2013   Falcon 9   Vandenberg

Now, at first glance, that looks really, really ambitious, doesn't it? Especially for a company that flew twice in 2012. So, just how many flights will SpaceX undertake this year? Nine? No.

WRONG! You just failed the quiz, brainiac. EPIC COSMIC FAIL!

Take a closer look at column 2: Vehicle Arrival at Launch Site. That means not all of these flights will take place this year. As a result, SpaceX's launch manifest is always difficult to read and schedule slips hard to pin down.

Fortunately, Spaceflight Now publishes a handy Worldwide Launch Schedule. According to the current schedule, we can expect five flights fr om SpaceX this year:

March 1: NASA Resupply Flight No. 2 to ISS (Falcon 9, Dragon — Cape Canaveral)
April: MDA/Canadian Space Agency Cassiope satellite (Falcon 9 — Vandenberg)
June: SES 8 satellite (Falcon 9 — Cape Canaveral)
August: ORCOMM OG2 satellites (Falcon 9 — Cape Canaveral)
September 30: NASA Resupply Flight No. 3 to ISS (Falcon 9, Dragon — Cape Canaveral)

The April launch of Cassiope will be the first flight with the upgraded Merlin 1D engines, elongated tanks and payload fairing (a.k.a., Falcon 9 v.1.1). It will also be SpaceX's first launch from its new complex at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. All previous Falcon 9 missions have flown fr om Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

The SES 8 flight will be SpaceX's first attempt to place a spacecraft into geosynchronous orbit wh ere the majority of communications satellites reside. That will be a major step forward for the company.

With CEO Elon Musk wanting to take the company public, SpaceX will need to significantly increase its launch rate to about once per month. The current schedule doesn't get them there this year, but it's possible that additional flights could be added. SpaceX now has 3,000 employees and has been hiring like crazy in an effort to ramp up production while at the same time maintaining high quality. That will be a delicate balancing act.

The company will continue work this year on its Grasshopper suborbital vehicle, which is designed to test techniques for recovering and reusing Falcon 9 stages. It will also continue to assemble the Falcon Heavy rocket at Vandenberg for a likely test flight in 2014.

Launch of Israeli satellite assigned to SpaceX

A Falcon 9 rocket will launch Israel's Amos 6 communications satellite fr om Cape Canaveral in 2015, SpaceX and Israeli satellite operator Spacecom announced Tuesday.

The Amos 6 satellite will beam broadband Internet services to homes across Africa, Europe and the Middle East.

Space Communication Ltd. of Tel Aviv signed a $195 million contract with Israel Aerospace Industries in November for construction of the satellite. MDA Corp. of Canada is contractor for Amos 6's Ku-band and Ka-band communications equipment.

Spacecom and SpaceX signed an agreement in 2010 for the launch of an unspecified Amos communications satellite, and Tuesday's announcement identified the 12,125-pound Amos 6 spacecraft as Spacecom's first payload to fly with SpaceX.

"This last year has been one of great success and tremendous growth," said Gwynne Shotwell, president of SpaceX. "Spacecom was one of our earliest supporters. SpaceX is proud to be their partner and we look forward to launching their Amos 6 satellite."

Spacecom will position Amos 6 in geostationary orbit at 4 degrees west longitude, wh ere it will replace the Amos 2 satellite launched in 2003. The Amos 6 satellite's design lifetime is 16 years, according to a press release.

Commercial customers and the Israeli government will use the Amos 6 satellite. Spacecom holds a $20 million agreement with the Israeli government for various communications services to be routed through Amos 6 once the craft is operational.

"We are excited to partner with SpaceX and its tremendous team. Amos 6 will be larger and stronger than Amos 2 and Amos 3 combined, and signals a new age for Spacecom," said David Pollack, president and CEO of Spacecom. "As we establish our position as a global satellite operator providing more services and capacity, Amos 6 will be a key element of our business strategy and future."

Amos 6 will launch on SpaceX's upgraded Falcon 9 rocket, which is set for its first test launch later this year from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif.

The current version of the Falcon 9 rocket has launched four times since 2010, including two cargo missions of SpaceX's Dragon capsule to the International Space Station.

The next Falcon 9 launch, now scheduled for liftoff on March 1, will be the last launch of the Falcon 9's existing design.

The new version of the privately-built launcher features extended first stage fuel tanks, more powerful Merlin engines and an altered first stage engine configuration.
