There is a device used to hold the Block E Engine Exhaust Deflector Doors open until  the Lunar craft lands. Upon landing this device releases the doors. The question is this: How does this device work? How does it hold, and how does it release?

I would like to start a new discussion which focuses on questions about hardware either found, or not found, on these spacecrafts so that we can get an idea of what a complete Lunniy Korabl would have looked like, as well as the function of some components.


I would like to start with this object located on the base of the Orientation Engine Block:



It is nozzle in shape, but does not seem to be connected to any piping. Who can tell me the purpose of this object?

I know the answer to this first question, and I almost hesitant to post the information simply because of the reaction I might get.

These are not gas or engine exhaust nozzles, and they are not conical antennae. These were part of the hardware used during transport and launch of the Lunniy Korabl on the N1 carrier rocket:



There were four vertical braces running up the LK exterior. At the top of these braces there were connecting rods which went from the brace to these conical shapes. The ends of these rods fit into these cones.

As strange as it seems, this is the answer.

True. These braces don't support the LK. They attach at the the bottom leg supports and run vertical up to the base of the Maneuvering Engine Block. There they turn horizontal and fit into the ends of the cones:

These are for the protection of the Lunar Vehicle from its' own launch fairing!

or an image looking straight at the front, or from lower angle. That landing Radar is probably the same as what would have been used on the Lunniy Korabl!

Yes, the Block E was poorly repaired with sheet metal, and in some instances items were removed. Fortunately, while it was at EuroDisney it was displayed with the Visual Orientation Device in its' opened position, as can be seen here in this photo from my comrade, Luc van den Abeelen:

I believe the LK at MAI is an early version, so the one at Mozhaike is probably the more accurate version.

Это было мнение одного моего знакомого. Заключалось оно в том, что в МАИ были ещё комплектующие к ЛК, в том числе нерезанный блок Е.
