TIRUPATI: An Indian scientific mission to Venus is being considered by the space community. This was announced by M S Anurup of Isro at the 17th National Space Science Symposium which has been jointly organised by Isro and Sri Venkateshwara University.

According to Anurup, a preliminary study had indicated that if this mission gets the go ahead and depending upon the orbital parameters, it could be launched on May 20, 2015 arriving in Venus in October 2015. There could be about five scientific instruments on board the Venus-bound spacecraft. The rocket could either be the advanced version of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-XL) or the Geo Synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) or the newer version of the GSLV designated as GSLV Mark3.The preliminary study states that the main role of the Indian mission to Venus would be to study its atmosphere. It will also help to examine the origin and evolution of terrestrial planets.[/size]

BANGALORE: It's Mission Saptha Upagraha and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) says all is on track. The Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) is a constellation of seven satellites and the ISRO seems to have pooled the best space stars from various work centres for the project. Shrugging out of the current crisis and sticking as one unit chanting the 'Mission Matters-mantra' spelt-out by its chief K Radhakrishnan, the prestigious mission promises to make India an independent space power.

Scheduled for a launch this year, three satellites are expected to be placed in the Geostationary Orbit at 32.5°E, 83°E & 131.5°E and two satellites each would be placed in the Geosynchronous Orbit with equatorial crossing at 55°E and 111.5°E and at an inclination of 29° to the equator. Two spare satellites are also planned as part of the mission. The IRNSS would provide two services, with the Standard Positioning Service open for civilian use and the Restricted Service, encrypted one,

ISRO Chief K Radhakrishnan today rejected suggestions that the row with his predecessor G Madhavan Nair and his indictment over the Antrix-Devas deal has dented its image and cast a shadow on the country's space programme.

Seeking to put the two-week-old controversy and its fall-out firmly behind, Radhakrishnan said the focus now is on missions and indicated that successful space ventures would redeem its pride.

"I don't think soz," he said when asked whether ISRO's image has taken a beating and the space programme being overshadowed after the raging ISRO row.

"That's the feeling I get from (various) ISRO centres (in the country)", Radhakrishnan, Chairman of ISRO and Secretary in the Department of Space and Chairman, Space Commission, told PTI here.

"People will understand what's going on", added Radhakrishnan, who had been accused by former ISRO Chairman G Madhavan Nair of being behind the move to blacklist him and three other ex-ISRO scientists in connection with the controversial Antrix-Devas deal which has sisnce been scrapped.

For ISRO, what matters is a mission. "If you do a good job, everybody is with you", he said, indicating that successful space ventures would put ISRO back into positive limelight.

"As far as ISRO is concerned, I don't see any problems", Radhakrishnan said, adding, ISRO is now working on the launch of radar imaging satellite in the last week of March, as well as the ground-test of cryogenic engine.

Asked if the ISRO row is a closed chapter, he said: "Yes, I think from my head it has gone...reports are there...what has been done....everything is there".

"I want to worry about ISRO now", he said.

Nair meanwhile is pinning hopes on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to revoke the order banning him and three others from government jobs despite Minister of State in PMO V Narayanasamy ruling out its review, as he reiterated there is "no issue" vis-a-vis the Antrix-Devas deal.

Speaking to PTI here, Nair said he hasn't heard from the Prime Minister. "I hope he will consider and take an appropriate decision", he said.

Nair wrote to the Prime Minister more than two weeks ago, appealing for quashing the order which he said was issued without enquiry and one aimed at tarnishing the image of the scientists.

Nair and three other ex-ISRO scientists were blacklisted based on two official reports on the controversial deal.

He has applied under RTI seeking copies of the order banning them as well the reports but "they are taking the usual time to reply. So I will have to allow that one month to get through to get all the details".

Asked if would appreciate it if the Prime Minister could intervene in the meanwhile, Nair said: "Yes, naturally".

On the statement of BK Chaturvedi, who probed the deal (with Roddam Narasimha) that there were no malafide intentions on the part of scientists and violation of norms and procedures were not malicious or deliberate, Nair said he (Chaturvedi committee) has "brought out the factual situation".

"I have been telling the same for long. There is no issue (no wrongdoing), that's the message he has conveyed", Nair said, reiterating that there was "no issue at all" vis-a-vis the scrapped agreement with Devas[/size].

Sullurpet (Nellore): In the wake of annulment of $300 million Antrix-Devas deal and subsequent controversy over the transparency of the functioning of Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro), the launch of several satellites is getting delayed.

Isro chairman Radhakrishnan has announced that the launch of the microwave remote sensing satellite RISAT-1, which was scheduled to go up into orbit with the help of Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle C-19 by March this year, is likely to be delayed, according to sources at SHAR.

Isro has formulated its launch calendar to send at least five satellites into the space this year from SHAR to enhance communication system in the country. But the cancelation of the 12-year contract between ISRO's commercial arm Antrix and Bengaluru-based Devas Multimedia apparently had a demoralising effect on the staff, causing inordinate delay in the launch of the satellites.

 In fact, Isro had planned to launch indigenous satellite SARAL with PSLV C-20, France's satellite IRNSS-1 with PSLV C-21 and two communication satellites using Geo Synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV)-D5 and GSLV Mark III this year.

It also planned to launch GSAT-6 satellite, which triggered controversy about the deal between Antrix and Devas.
Probe teams have indicted former Isro chairman Madhavan Nair and three other ex-Isro scientists, saying they benefited Devas and caused a great loss to the exchequer.

Sources revealed that Isro chairman Radhakrishnan is facing criticism from his predecessor Nair, who is charging that he has been blacklisted due to Radhakrishnan's involvement. Radhakrishnan unsuccessfully launched two satellites after he assumed office.

With this, he is reviewing the entire launching mechanism and apparently decided to delay several projects until rectification of indigenous cryogenic stage of GSLV.

However, self-interests and professional jealousies as well as nepotism have had an adverse impact on the Isro employees. People are also apprehensive of the security of the nation and communication as well as information system as Isro is dragged into unwanted controversies.

RISAT-1 mission is not scheduled for March-2012. It may slip further to April or May. Some sources have told that the vehicle is waiting for the satellite to arrive from ISAC center at Bangalore.

Also ISRO seems to be plagued with internal revolt by a section of scientists loyal to former chairman Mr. Madhavan Nair.

India's mission to Mars received a major boost on Friday during the Union Budget announcement, with the budgetary allocation rocketing more than ten-fold to Rs. 125 crores (US$24.9 million).

AsianScientist (Mar. 19, 2012) – India's mission to Mars received a major boost on Friday during the Union Budget announcement, with the budgetary allocation rocketing from Rs. 10 crores (US$1.99 million) to Rs. 125 crores (US$24.9 million).

The massive increase allays apprehensions that this mission may end up only on the drawing boards.

"Mars Orbiter Mission envisages launching an orbiter around Mars using the PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle)-XL during the November 2013 launch opportunity. The Mars orbiter will be placed in an orbit of 500 x 80,000 km around Mars and will have a provision for carrying nearly 25 kg of scientific payloads on board," the budget document said.

If the mission is targeted for a November 2013 lift off, indications are that the launch will be on November 23, 2013 from the Satish Dhawan Space Center, Sriharikota, with the orbiter arriving in Mars in September 2014.

A mission to Mars can always prove to be a nail-biting experience, because three out of the four missions in the U.S. have failed. In Russia, most of the missions have flopped, the most recent one being the Phobos-Grunt mission.

The PSLV-XL is an advanced version of the PSLV which was used for launching the Chandrayaan-1 mission to the moon on October 22, 2008. Originally, the Mars mission was to have been launched using the three-stage Geo Synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV). but, with a degree of uncertainty about this rocket, ISRO decided to use the PSLV-XL which is a highly reliable vehicle.

On March 2, 2012, during a debate jointly organized by the newly-formed Mars Society India and the Nehru Center on "Mission to Mars: Go Or No Go," eminent space scientist, P. C. Agrawal, announced that the mission was on track and the flight engine is expected to be tested in June. The participants of the debate were students from IIT-Mumbai.

Agrawal's remark assumes significance in the context of him being a member of an ISRO-appointed committee which recently deliberated about the feasibility of the program.

Top space scientists, the majority of them attached to the Ahmedabad-based Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), an ISRO affiliate, have suggested ten experiments that can be a part of the mission. Most of them relate to the study of the Martian atmosphere. Many in the space community feel that the Mars mission should be given precedence over India's second mission to the moon, Chandrayaan-2.

At the National Space Science Symposium which was jointly organized by the Sri Venkateshwara University and ISRO in February, there were a number of presentations about the scientific payloads which will fly on the Indian Mars mission.

The overall budget for ISRO has shot up from Rs. 4,432 crores to Rs. 6,715 crores with several other projects also planned. The allocation for the human space flight program has also gone up from Rs. 10 crores to Rs. 30 crores.[/size]

 The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) would soon launch an Indonesian satellite into orbit on a turn-key basis, using an indigenously built launch vehicle.

 The ISRO has bagged this job on the basis of the competitive rate it has offered to the Indonesian space agency. This was revealed here by Indonesian diplomatic sources on the sidelines of the Indonesian Ambassador's interaction with some business leaders who have been invited to set up industrial units there.

 The Indonesian satellite to be put in space through an ISRO launch vehicle, named IinuSat, would be for communication and weather forecasting purpose.

 The IinuSat, weighing about 30 kilogrammes, is being made by students of six universities in Indonesia and the technical experts have already arrived at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in Thiruvananthapuram for its integration with the launch vehicle.

 The ISRO would be paid a fee of 100,000 Euros for the launch, said Son Kuswadi, Education Attache in the Indonesian Embassy in India. The launch is scheduled in early 2013, he revealed.[/size]

 "Экономическое сотрудничество с Россией в Вентспилсе очень длинный и разнообразный.  В основном, это, конечно, связаны с транзитом.  [..] В России у нас есть сотрудничество в области науки, и мы видим большой потенциал для развития сотрудничества в целях развития.  Кроме того, в настоящее время переговоры ведутся на первый латвийский спутников на орбиту вокруг Земли, с помощью русских ракет-носителей.  Мы думаем, что сможем согласовать все условия, и теперь предсказывает, что это может быть в середине лета ", сообщил Лембергс.

 Вешняков посетил сегодня Вентспилсский Международный радиоастрономической центра.

 "Тогда я обратил свое внимание в России в июле прошлого года в Латвии подписали декларацию, которая направлена на обеспечение того, чтобы мы развиваем сотрудничество в области высоких технологий и науки.  [..] Если это небольшой, но важный спутник проект будет успешным, то, вероятно, будет другой, больше ", сказал Вешняков.  Как и Латвии с Россией могут быть и другие проекты сотрудничества в области науки, сказал посол.

 Вешняков приветствовал Вентспилсской высшей школы и способность местных органов власти по привлечению средств из фондов Европейского Союза для организации и модернизации советской армии удалось в Вентспилсский Международный центр radioastonomijas инфраструктуры.

"The leaders noted that the technical experts from both sides met in Bangalore, India, in March 2011 and identified priority areas of cooperation," it said.

The Korean side welcomed India's participation in the international open bidding for launching Korean satellites.

"The two leaders proposed that the concerned agencies of both countries study the possible cooperation in future space activities including launching a nano-satellite developed by Korean students on an Indian launch vehicle," the statement said.

ISRO has so far launched satellites built by Israel, Algeria, Singapore, Switzerland, Italy and the Netherlands. Prime Minister Singh and President Lee welcomed the upgrading of the Joint Committee on Science and Technology to the ministerial level as a foundation for common growth.[/size]

India To Launch Astrium's Spot 6 Earth Observation Satellite[/size]

    PARIS — India's PSLV rocket will launch the Spot 6 commercial Earth observation satellite for Astrium Services of Europe late this year under a contract announced April 3 by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

    The 800-kilogram satellite, intended to operate from a near-polar low Earth orbit at 694 kilometers in altitude, will be accompanied on the launch by several other payloads that ISRO did not identify.


    Astrium Services is building and launching the identical Spot 6 and 7 satellites using its own funds, with no assistance — nor any guarantee of future image purchases — by the French government. Astrium officials have said they expect to spend about 300 million euros ($400 million) to build and launch the two spacecraft.

    Spot 7 is scheduled for launch in 2014, with a launch vehicle yet to be announced.

    Spot 6 and Spot 7 will replace the larger Spot 5 satellite, which was launched in 2002 and has been operating beyond its contracted in-orbit service life since 2008. Spot 5 has been the principal revenue generator for Astrium Geo-Information Services, the Astrium Services division that commercializes Earth observation imagery.

    Spot 6 and Spot 7 are expected to operate 180 degrees apart in low Earth orbit, much as the higher-resolution Pleiades satellites, the first of which was launched in December. The French government financed development of the two Pleiades satellites, and Astrium Geo-Information Services is commercializing Pleiades imagery.

    Spot 6 and Spot 7 will be capable of distinguishing objects of 1.5 meters in diameter in black and white, and 6 meters in color. The images will have a swath width of 60 kilometers, like the previous Spot spacecraft, but will be more agile. The satellites will be able to move the imager up to 45 degrees off nadir back and forth to capture views in front of and behind the satellite, and up to 35 degrees off nadir from side to side.

    ISRO said the agreement between Astrium and ISRO's Antrix commercial arm is part of a long-term cooperation agreement signed in September 2008. The same collaborative accord covered the construction of the Hylas 1 Ka-band broadband satellite operated by Avanti Communications of London. ISRO and Antrix built the Hylas 1 satellite structure, or bus, with Astrium providing the telecommunications payload.[/size]

NEW DELHI (PTI): Armed with the capability of providing real time data from multiple sites, the dedicated communication satellites for Indian Navy and Air Force will be launched in the next two years, government told the Lok Sabha on Monday.

In a written reply to a question in the House, Defence Minister A K Antony said, "The Naval Satellite is planned to be launched in 2012-13...A dedicated communication satellite for Air Force is planned to be launched in 2013-2014."

Another PSLV would deploy the first dedicated Indian navigation satellite in orbit in early 2013, he said. ISRO also plans to have GSAT-15 and GSAT-16 which would be a replica of GSAT-8 and GSAT-10, Radhakrishnan said. ISRO Satellite Centre Director T K Alex said ISRO was planning to have a six ton satellite and right now the space organisation was focusing on designing aspects. "The six ton satellite will have 48 or even 60 transponders," he said. It would take 30 to 36 months to complete "such a huge project and having six ton satellite makes economic sense", Alex said. Asked the reason for Nair not being invited for ISRO's 40-year-celebrations, Alex said the former ISRO Chairman had sent a message about his unavailability. The government has barred Nair and three other ISRO scientists from holding government posts for their alleged role in the controversial Antrix-Devas deal.[/size]
