Though ISRO had said that another rocket launch, carrying remote sensing satellite Risat, lack of time has put it in doubt.

"Normally there needs to be a month's time gap between two launches to refurbish the launch pad," an ISRO official said.

"Given this situation, the preparations for the next launch can start only by mid-November, leaving just 45 days in this calendar year. So there may not be fourth launch this year."

ISRO mulling more launch sites

Last Updated: Wednesday, October 12, 2011, 17:17

Sriharikota: ISRO today said it planned to have more launch sites as the frequency of satellite launches is slated to go up in the coming years.

"We need to provide more number of launch pads, since the number of launches from ISRO is going to go up," ISRO Chairman K Radhakrishnan told reporters here.

We will do a feasibility study soon on sites "which can be something like another Sriharikota."

The outlay for these new sites maybe less than Rs 1,000 crore, he said.

Listing out the launches, he said the GSLV launch is scheduled for the second quarter of 2012. There are two more PSLVs - one (PLSV C-19) carrying RISAT-1, a microwave remote sensing satellite, another (PSLV C 20) carrying an Indo French collaborative satellite Saral and small other satellites which will study oceans, he said.

ISRO also plans to launch Astrosat and Aditya satellites in the coming years.

The agency is also scheduled to launch Chandrayaan 2 at end of 2013 or beginning of 2014. "It will be launched with a GSLV," another ISRO official said.

On status of work on Mark III, P S Veeraraghavan, Director, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre said "it is progressing well, with tests on three stages of S 200, L 110 and C 25 to be completed."

On promoting nano satellites from the student community, Radhakrishnan said ISRO's objective was to give them practical experience on how to work with a satellite.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/PSLV-launch-successful-four-satellites-in-orbit/articleshow/10327098.cms

SRIHARIKOTA, ANDHRA PRADESH: The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) will launch its next Geo-Synchronous Launch Vehicle (GSLV) with an indigenous cryogenic engine in the second quarter of 2012, ISRO chairman K Radhakrishnan said at a press conference on Wednesday. He was speaking on the occasion of the successful launch of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle ( PSLV-C18 ), which placed four satellites in correct orbits, at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota, 100 km from Chennai.

Radhakrishnan also said that the second moon mission, Chandrayaan-II, would be launched at the end of 2013 or the beginning of 2014, if all scheduled GSLV tests are successful.

In December 2010, the launch of a communication satellite GSAT-5P on board the GSLV-F06 failed when the rocket developed a snag soon after lift-off. "We have identified the problem and are making improvements so that it does not occur again. We are currently testing various components at the cryogenic stage. We are running some long duration tests, one which will commence towards the end of this year," said S Ramakrishnan, director of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre.

Two PSLV launches have been planned before the GSLV launch. In December, PSLV-C19 will launch ISRO's first completely indigenous microwave remote sensing satellite (RISAT-1), while PSLV-C20 will launch an environment monitoring SARAL satellite, developed by India and France, in March.

ISRO plans to have two GSLV launches using the indigenous engine before moving on to the Chandrayaan-II project, said T K Alex, director, ISRO Satellite Centre.

The organization is working on the development of an indigenous cryogenic engine for the GSLV MK-III, also called C25. "We have a completely indigenous design for C25 but the development is complex will need more time," said Ramakrishnan.

Indian military satellite delayed again by a year

NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh may wax eloquent that the military will be equipped with "all necessary means to meet all threats", including those "which go beyond conventional warfare", but no sense of urgency is being shown in the space arena, Indian media reported on Thursday.

According to reports, Indian armed forces are still to get their own dedicated surveillance and communication satellites despite several years of promises and plans, leave alone offensive space capabilities like ASAT (anti-satellite) weapons or advanced directed-energy laser weapons.

Moreover, Indian government continues to keep the desperately-needed tri-Service Aerospace Command in cold storage, even though China has taken to the military exploitation of space, which includes ASAT capabilities, in a major way, report said.

Top Indian defence officials admit the much-awaited launch of the naval communication and surveillance satellite, "Rohini", has been once again delayed by a year or so. Satellites for Army-IAF will only follow thereafter, it said.

Incidentally, during the naval commanders' conference in 2009, defence minister A K Antony had declared that the satellite to boost connectivity over sea would be launched in early-2010.

Subsequently, Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) had revised the satellite's "launch window" to December 2010-March 2011. But to no avail.

"There has been another big delay now...it won't be possible before end-2012 at the earliest," said an Indian official, even as all top military commanders are currently in New Delhi for their annual brain-storming sessions.

"The problem is the repeated failures of GSLV (geosynchronous satellite launch vehicle) and indigenous cryogenic engines (ISRO is now left with only one of the cryogenic engines imported fr om Russia)," he added.

With no early launch in sight, talk is gaining ground that India should contemplate a foreign launcher for its GSAT-7 series of military satellites.

The 2,330-kg naval satellite is supposed to have an around 1,000 nautical mile footprint over Indian Ocean, stretching from Red Sea to Malacca Strait, to ensure "network-centric operations" and "maritime domain awareness". The IAF-Army one, in turn, will have a similar footprint over land.

Indian Defence Space Vision-2020 identified only intelligence, reconnaissance, surveillance, communication and navigation as the thrust areas in Phase-I till 2012. But even such capabilities, which include the critical necessity to keep 24x7 tabs on enemy troop movements, warships, airbases and missile silos as well as bolster surveillance over Indian airspace, will remain lim ited in the absence of dedicated military satellites.

Interestingly, while India is publicly opposed to "militarization of space", the defence ministry last year had come out with a "Technology Perspective and Capability Roadmap" till 2025 which identified space warfare as a priority area, as was first reported by TOI.

The roadmap, for instance, identified development of ASAT weapons "for electronic or physical destruction of satellites in both LEO (2,000-km altitude above earth's surface) and GEO-synchronous orbits" as a thrust area.

ISRO aims at 45 to 50 launches

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The 12th five-year plan period will be a busy one for ISRO's Sriharikota spaceport. If things pan out as ISRO hopes it would, then 2012-2017 will see more number of missions compared to previous five-year plan periods. ISRO chairman K Radhakrishnan, addressing the national conference on 'Space Transportation Systems: Opportunities and Challenges', organised by the VSSC and Indian National Academy of Engineering at Thumba on Saturday, said that the ISRO was targeting 45 to 50 launches during the 12th five-year plan.

In the 11th, the target had been 30, with six missions per year. The 10th five- year plan had witnessed 20 missions. (The Sathish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, has at present two launch pads. ISRO is planning a third one which will be able to accommodate advanced launch vehicles).

No Flaw in GSLV Design: Radhakrishnan said that the GSLV, which had two crashes in 2010, had no flaw in design. There have been problems in implementation which are being corrected. The next GSLV launch will be in the second quarter of 2012, he said.

In March 2012, the ISRO will launch a microwave remote sensing satellite which will be useful for the farm sector as well as disaster management. Cloud cover will not be a problem for this satellite, which gives it an edge over conventional satellites. The ISRO chairman said the years ahead would be a busy one for ISRO. At present, 170 transponders are in service, but the current requirement is 500.

The three-day conference, which focuses on low-cost space transportation, is being attended by a large number of scientists from India and foreign space agencies such as NASA, ESA and JAXA. It will conclude on Sunday.

Indian Scientists Propose 10 Experiments For 2013 Mission To Mars

Srinivas Laxman
January 9, 2012

A Indian mission to Mars is taking shape with space scientists proposing 10 experiments, mostly related to the study of the Red Planet's atmosphere.

AsianScientist (Jan. 9, 2012) – A Indian mission to Mars is taking shape with space scientists proposing 10 experiments, mostly related to the study of the Red Planet's atmosphere.

Proof that this challenging mission is no longer a dream is amply evident in a report of the Planetary Sciences and Exploration conference, organized by the Ahmedabad-based Planex group of the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), an affiliate of ISRO, between December 12 and 14, 2011.

The report shows that scientists from various ISRO centers and the PRL are extremely enthusiastic about the flight to the Red Planet, and are awaiting a formal 'go' from ISRO, the Space Commission, and the Uni on Cabinet.

As a precursor to the mission, a Mars Mission Study Team has already been formed to prepare the science and mission scenarios for ISRO.

In addition, a brainstorming session on Mars science and exploration was held at the PRL on March 24 and 25, 2011, as a preparatory step for ISRO's Mars exploration plans. This two-day session served as an initial platform for scientists and students to fuel up their proposals and plans for an Indian Mars mission.

The December conference report states that the 10 Indian Martian experiments suggested are:

Probe For Infrared Spectroscopy for Mars (Prism) which will study certain aspects of the Martian atmosphere and "spatial and seasonal variations of these gases over the lifetime of the mission."
Mars Exospheric Neutral Composition Analyzer (Menca) which will analyze the Martian upper atmosphere-exosphere region 400 km above the surface.
Another instrument (Tis) will measure thermal emissions from the surface of the Red Planet. Its primary science goals include mapping the surface composition and mineralogy of Mars and understanding the dynamics of the Martian atmosphere by monitoring carbon dioxide levels.
Using radio signals to study the atmosphere.
Mars Color Camera (MCC) which can image from a highly elliptical orbit of 500 km x 80,000 km. It will be designed as a multi-purpose instrument which can image the topography of the Martian surface and map Martian polar caps. "It is expected to observe and help in furthering our understanding of events like dust storms and dust devils. From an elliptical orbit around Mars, the camera will return high quality visual images of Mars, its moons, asteroids and other celestial bodies from close quarters," the report states.
A Methane Sensor For Mars (MSM) has been recommended for detecting methane in the Martian atmosphere.
A Mars Radiation Spectrometer (Maris) which can measure and characterize charged particle background levels during the cruise and orbit phase of the spacecraft. This instrument will play an important role for a possible future human mission to Mars as it will determine radiation exposure doses.
A Plasma and Current Experiment (Pace) which will assess what is known as "atmospheric escape and processes of the Martian atmosphere and the structure of the Martian tail."
A microwave remote sensing technique for sounding the Martian atmosphere. Scientists connected with this instrument say that it will be designed to be minimally affected during a dust storm.
A suite of instruments to detect plasma waves in the Martian atmosphere.

If this much-awaited mission finally gets off the ground with the required approvals, only some of the 10 experiments and payloads will be sel ected, with a focus on experiments that have not been done before, sources tell Asian Scientist Magazine.

Mars fever has gripped many scientists at the PRL, with an Indian chapter of the Mars Society formed at IIT-Mumbai.

Planning for the Mars lift off has progressed to such an extent that the provisional launch windows have already been fixed for either 2013, 2016, or 2018 from Sriharikota, India's main spaceport near Chennai.

According to the scientists, if the launch takes place in November 2013, then the Indian spacecraft will enter the orbit around Mars in September 2014. It will be an orbiting mission and not a landing one. On reaching Mars after a 10-month flight, the spacecraft will operate and pick up scientific data in a highly elliptical orbit of 500 km x 80,000 km.

Some scientists even feel that the mission to Mars must be given precedence over the second Indian mission to the moon, Chandrayaan-2, since India has already done a lunar mission successfully.

Place: Bangalore | Agency: PTI

Indigenously developed remote sensing satellite RISAT-1, which can take images of the Earth in all weather conditions, would be launched by space agency ISRO anytime from March 15.

The 1850 kg RISAT-1, earlier slated for launch last year onboard PSLV-C19, would be a major milestone for the country and a boon for regions perennially under cloud cover.

"The launch of microwave remote sensing RISAT-1 is slated anytime from March 15," ISRO Chairman K Radhakrishnan told reporters on the sidelines of an event here organised by the Indian Institute of Science.

Besides use in the agriculture sector, the satellite's all weather capability to take images of the Earth could also be used to keep an eye on the country's borders round-the-clock and to help in anti-terrorist and anti-infiltration operations, he said.

The ground testing for GSLV-Mk III, which can lift four tonne spacecraft, was on and its launch would be finalised by May or June this year, Radhakrishnan said.

On the other future launches, he said communication satellites GSAT-10 and GSAT-7 were scheduled for launch this year.

GSAT-14 onboard indigenously developed Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-D5) was also scheduled for launch this year, the ISRO chief said, adding the agency planned for the launch of first regional navigation satellite system in 2012.

Karnataka Knowledge Commission Chairman and renowned space scientist Dr K Kasturirangan, in his speech at the event, stressed the need for state governments to take the geographic information (GI) system to district and panchayat levels to improve the process of decision-making.

Do you think that India is delaying the launching of an astronomical satellite, Astrosat, which is now slated for lift off in October-November 2012? Other countries have launched astronomical satellites much earlier.

Isro's Sathish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota is all set to launch five rockets this year. This includes three polar satellite launch vehicles and two geosynchronous launch vehicles, said director of SDSC M. Chandravadan Dattan at Shar on the occasion of Republic Day.

He said they would launch 1,850 kg Risat-1 (Microwave Remote Sensing Satellite) into the orbit using PSLV C-19 launch vehicle from the first launch pad of Shar in March.

The satellite has been made using indigenous technology and it is for the first time PSLV will carry such a heavy satellite. Strap on motors used for Chandrayaan-1 will be used for the flight, he added.

Another satellite which is also being produced using indigenous technology is slated for launch through PSLV C-20 this year. He also said PSLV C-21 would carry a satellite belonging to France.

Communication satellites would be launched using GSLV- D5 and GSLV-Mark III launch vehicles in August and before the end of year.

According to Mr Dattan, Isro scientists are trying to overcome teething problems they faced with indigenous cryogenic stage in GSLV.

He said they have successfully completed S-2-solid propellant L-110 liquid propellant tests in static condition at Shar.

Reacting to a question on Antrix-Devas deal, he said those involved were above ill intentions and selfish goals and they would never do anything to affect the reputation of Isro or the country.

He also said none should violate rules and regulations notwithstanding their positions.

ЦитироватьHyderabad, Jan. 28:

Andhra Sugars Ltd has started supply of liquid hydrogen, cryogenic fuel to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

Liquid hydrogen is used as a propellant in the Geostationary Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) by the national space agency.

GSLV is used in placing bigger satellites in a stationery orbit. India is testing its capabilities in this area. The liquid hydrogen tanker was flagged off by Mr S. Ramakrishnan (Director – LPSC) and Mr P. Narendranath Chowdary, Joint Managing Director of Andhra Sugars today from the Tanuku plant.

According to Mr Chowdary, the company has set up a facility to liquefy hydrogen gas with the technical guidance from ISRO.

In ISRO's satellite launch vehicle's solid propellant is used in the first stage, liquid propellant in the second stage and cryogenic propellant in the third stage of GSLV. All these propellants are now manufactured by Andhra Sugars.

The Tanuku-headquartered company has been supplying propellant's to the ISRO for some time as part of its national commitment and indigenous technology capability demonstration.

ЦитироватьChandrayan-2 faces delay after Russian Mars probe failure
Vladimir Radyuhin

The failure of the Russian Mars mission last month will cause a delay in the construction of a Russian lander for India's Chandrayan-2 mission to the Moon, said Russia's top space official.

As a result, the launch of Chandrayan-2, planned for 2013, may have to be postponed by three years.

Academician Lev Zelyony, head of the Russian Space Research Institute, was quoted as saying that the Luna-Resource lander may not be ready till 2016.

"There were plans to launch the Luna-Glob and Luna-Resource missions in 2015," the Russian scientist told RIA Novosti. "But the dates may have to be moved, as the technical solutions that were used with NPO Lavochkin's Phobos-Grunt were also used in the lunar projects and they clearly need to be reviewed."

The Phobos-Grunt spacecraft, launched in November to retrieve soil samples from the Martian moon Phobos, became stuck in Earth's orbit after its engines failed to fire and crashed back to Earth last month.

A Russian government commission set up to investigate the probe failure blamed it on a burst of heavy charged space radiation that caused the onboard computers to reboot and go into standby mode.

Academician Zelyony, who took part in the investigation, said the review will not affect scientific instruments of Luna-Resource and Luna-Glob, but only their control systems and the spacecraft.

While the Luna-Resource lander is to travel to the Moon aboard the Chandrayan-2 spacecraft and put an Indian rover on the lunar surface, the identical Luna-Globe will be an entirely Russian mission, which is to carry a boring system for taking Moon rock samples.
