The ISRO Chairman, however, said: "we will now review the GSLV programme" since a GSLV of the same class was needed to put Chandrayaan-2 into orbit in 2013-14. While India would build the Chandrayaan-2 and the rover that would drive about on the Moon's soil, Russia would provide the lander, which would land the rover on the lunar soil. "The Russians are happy with the [Chandrayaan-2] programme so far," he said.

The ISRO would launch a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C16) from Sriharikota in the first week of February 2011. The rocket would put in orbit India's Resourcesat-2, Youthsat with payloads from Russia and India, and X-Sat from Singapore.

ISRO to send three satellites on board PSLV early next year

Sriharikota (AP), Dec 25 (PTI) ISRO intended to make a series of launches in 2011-2012 including a "Youth Satellite" made by students of Singapore University, the space agency''s Chairman K Radhakrishnan said today.
Explaining about the agency''s future plans, he told reporters here that ISRO was hoping to sending three satellites on board the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle early next year.
"Currently it is in the assembling stage. We will be doing the flight testing stage later in January (2011) and we are expecting it to be launched in the first week of February," he said, adding it will be the 16 mission of the PSLV, (PSLV C-16).
The vehicle would carry the Resourcesat-II, Youth Sat, a satellite developed by students of Singapore University, and X-SAT.
Resourcesat-2 is a follow on mission to Resourcesat-1. It is intended to replace Resourcesat-1 launched in 2003. The images provided by Resourcesat-1 were used for advanced applications such as vegetation, crop yield and disaster management support.
Besides, he said a heavier communication satellite GSAT-8 which is being jointly developed by Indo-French space agencies would be launched from Arianespace French Guyuana in March-April 2011.
"24 Ku-band transponders will be coming by March 2011..
We have a contract with them (French Guyana)," he said. "After this we will be launching the GSAT-10 and GSAT-9 completing the series," he said, adding that GSAT-10 and GSAT-9 would be communication satellites.
ISRO is also looking at possibilities to launch Megha-tropiques satellite on PSLV-C17 by 2011 which would help to study the tropical climates.
On the Chandrayaan-2 mission, he said they are planning to launch it in 2013-2014. He said that the space agency discussed the matter with French President Nicolas Sarkozy who expressed happiness about the mission.
Sarkozy and his wife Carla Bruni had visited the ISRO headquarters at Bangalore early this month.
Radhakrishnan said they would also launch the communication satellite GSAT-12 using Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle next year.
"We are building it right now.. We are going to launch it from Sriharikota in 2011", he said.

ЦитироватьISRO to go ahead despite setback
Sriharikota, Dec 25, DHNS:

The failure of the GSLV-FO6 mission will not affect Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) efforts to add transponder capacities to a range of telecom, meteorology, television and radio broadcast services by the Indian National Satellite System, ISRO Chairman K Radhakrishnan said.

Though Saturday's aborted communication satellite "GSAT-5P" carried 24 C-band and 12 Extended C-band transponders to augment the capacity of the Indian communication satellites already in orbit, the ISRO will be launching "GSAT-8" with 24 Ku band transponders on board the Ariane vehicle of the European Space Agency in French Guyana in March/April 2011, Radhakrishnan said.

Sixty-four of the 67 transponders now leased out by the ISRO to commercial customers were in the more powerful Ku band. The next "GSAT-8" launch should considerably help to augment capacities for service providers.

Further, in the next three to four months, the ISRO will launch smaller satellites from here on board a "Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV)" with 12 "Extended C-band transponders."

That will also help offset Saturday's loss, he said. These will be followed by communication satellites, "GSAT-10" and "GSAT-9."

On the GSLV front, Radhakrishnan said the ISRO planned a series of ground tests during 2011 in the wake of steps to redesign the indigenous cryogenic engine it used in the third stage after last April's failure.

Six of the seven cryogenic engines got from Russia have been used so far. "Our seeking more cryogenic engines from them will depend on how we develop our indigenous cryogenic engine," he said.

The ISRO plans its next GSLV flight by 2011-end or early 2012, after a thorough study of the present failures.

The space body's forthcoming flights in 2011 will be PSLV-centric that has proved its versatility internationally.

The next PSLV flight from Sriharikota, planned for early February 2011, will carry three satellites "Resource Sat-II," a "youth satellite" built by students at Moscow University and the ISRO, besides a third one built by Singapore University.

The GSLV launch vehicle required for the ISRO's ambitious "Chandrayaan II" (Moon Mission) programme, planned for 2013-14, will also be reviewed now thoroughly. The ISRO is working with Russia on "Chandrayaan II" with "India providing the orbiter and the rover, and they providing the lunar lander," he explained.

ISRO to launch two large communication satellites this year

CHENNAI: ISRO today said it plans to launch at least two large communication satellites within this calendar year to tide over the scarcity of transponders due to the failure of two consecutive GSLV missions.

The space agency has also decided to turn to the tried and tested Arianespace for the twin launches scheduled for March and December this year.

"We are going to launch GSAT-8 and GSAT-10 this year. These two satellites will reduce the scarcity of transponders and help us reduce the backlog,"
T K Alex, Director of the ISRO Satellite Centre , told reporters on the sidelines of the 98th Indian Science Congress here.

Alex said the space agency has also been hiring transponders on other satellites as a temporary solution to clear the backlog.

The 51-m tall Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle, carrying the 2.3-tonne advanced communications satellite GSAT-5P with 36 transponders, exploded barely a minute after it blasted off from the Sriharikota spaceport last month.

This was the second consecutive failure of a GSLV mission in nine months.

On April 15, the GSLV launched using an indigenously developed cryogenic engine failed to put the GSAT-4 in orbit.

Alex said ISRO plans to launch the RISAT, Resourcesat-2, Meghtropiques and Youthsat satellites this year.

He said another communication satellite GSAT-12 will also be launched using a PSLV rocket sometime in the middle of the year.

On the December failure of the GSLV, he said a committee of scientists was going into the reasons for the failure and ways to correct it.

"We will go forward with a positive attitude," he said. Alex said ISRO is also developing its own cryogenic engine and ground tests for the same have been planned for this year.

"There are some very particular issues and we will try to solve them this year and possibly we will come out of it. Then we will be out of the red," he said. "Next year our own GSLV should be able to carry satellites," he said.

Alex said ISRO was also helping universities develop smaller satellites -- nano satellites -- which also could be used to demonstrate nascent technologies.

Five institutes -- IIT-Kanpur, IIT-Mumbai, Indian Institute of Space Technology , Sathyabhama Institute and Vellore Institute of Technology -- have been building nano satellites.

28 December 2010

Bangalore: India may launch at least 30 earth observation satellites over the next one decade, according to a government official at the Department of Space (DoS). Perspective plans drawn up for the next ten years foresee launch of a series of Resourcesat, Cartosat, ocean and atmospheric satellites.

Cartosat-2. Image: ISRO"We expect not less than 30 satellites," director of the Hyderabad-based National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), Dr V Jayaraman said. The NRSC operates under the DoS.

NRSC is responsible for remote sensing, satellite data acquisition and processing, data dissemination, aerial remote sensing and decision support for disaster management.

The satellites to be launched would include Cartosat-3 with 30 cm resolution, he said.

"We will launch Resourcesat-2 in early February or ending January. It will be a replacement satellite for Resourcesat-1 which gave us 5.8 metres, 70 km multi-spectral data for the first time," Dr Jayaraman said.

He also revealed that ISRO was setting up an integrated multi-mission ground segment in Hyderabad at an investment of Rs35-40 crore. The centre is expected to become operational in June next.

Dr Jayaraman said through this ground station (segment), ISRO would be able to receive all the satellite data "...making the (space) products in such a way that every day we will supply 1000 products to the users directly."

Currently, NRSC can deliver space ''products'' within four-five days of receiving the data. This new ground segment would enable to do this work within 12 hours and supply "emergency products" within an hour.

Chennai students design nano satellite, to be launched April

CHENNAI: A group of 54 engineering students from the city has designed a 10-kg nano satellite to monitor greenhouse gases (GHG) that the Indian space agency is planning to launch in April.

The students from the SRM University, some 40 km from the capital city, have been working on the project 'SRMSAT' since 2008. The satellite weighing just 10 kg is being developed under the guidance of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) at a cost of Rs.1 crore.

With climate change becoming a cause of serious concern globally, the satellite will monitor GHG - mainly carbon dioxide - in the atmosphere. A grating spectrometer is employed for monitoring earth-based sources and sinks of anthropogenic and natural sources of GHG.

The students from 12 disciplines of engineering in the university have been working closely with the ISRO to develop the nano satellite.

A nano satellite is one that weighs less than, or equal to, 10 kg.

"The satellite is scheduled for launch in April this year with ISRO's Megatropics G satellite. We have signed a memorandum of understanding with the national space agency for the project," M. Loganathan, former ISRO scientist who is heading the team, told IANS on the sidelines of the ongoing Indian Science Congress at the SRM University campus here.

According to Loganathan, the students are very passionate about the project and would work on it after their classes.

"Their classes get over by 4 p.m. and after that all of them hang on in the research laboratory for say till midnight to work on the nano satellite. It's their baby and an outcome of their hard work," he said.

The ISRO said the satellite has to be tested before it can be included as a payload.

The students have been wholly involved in the project, right from procuring components to assembling and testing the satellite.

Explaining the initial problems they faced, Sarwesh Narayaan, a mechanical engineering student, told IANS: "It was difficult to communicate technically as we all come from different disciplines of engineering, but we did overcome it as each of us had to understand the concepts of all the other disciplines before designing the project."

"All of us are multi-tasking, and an electrical engineer student in the group is also conversant with the concepts of mechanical, aerospace, electrical communication and information engineering. We have been solving each others' problem," Guruditya Singh, a final year student, told IANS.

It's the team spirit that keeps this group of 51 men and 3 women students going.

"Whenever we get some time, maybe over lunch or dinner or during weekends, our point of discussion is only SRMSAT. Each one of us enjoys talking about it and our sessions go on for hours. There is nobody junior or senior but a team, and our mantra is value for thought. A first year student can also give a good piece of advice to the group," said Anushree Mahapatra, a student of electronic and information engineering.

The conception of SRMSAT dates back to August 2008 when the vision of launching a student satellite was put forward at a seminar taken by eminent space scientist D. Raghavamurty.

"It is planned to make our first nano satellite as a SRMSAT bus so that further missions can be continued with different payloads that can be supported with this design," said Loganathan.

More and more students are showing interest in the space science.

In 2010, ISRO launched Studsat -- a tiny satellite built by 35 students from four engineering colleges in Bangalore and three in Hyderabad -- which can take pictures of the earth from space, helping in weather forecasting.

During the golden jubilee celebrations of IIT-Kanpur last year, President Pratibha Patil handed over to the ISRO a nano satellite 'Jugnu' developed by students of the country's premier institution.

Other institutes have got in the act as well. A 3.5-kg satellite 'Pradhan' is being built by students of IIT-Mumbai. Students of Sathyabhama University, Chennai, are also working on a nano satellite.

In Vellore Institute of Technology University (VITU), Vellore, the students have designed the TubeSat, which is a pico-satellite, weighing less than 1 kg.

an. 5: Indian Space Research Organisation scientists will soon launch a high resolution satellite capable of continuously monitoring major swathes along the country's borders.

"It will be stationed at an altitude of 36,000 km and transmit live pictures of the areas of our choice," said Ranganath R. Navalgund, director, Space Application Centre, Ahmedabad, a specialised unit of Isro.

Delivering the key-note address in the Space Summit held here on Wednesday as part of the 98th edition of the Indian Science Congress, Prof. Navalgund pointed out that the present fleet of remote sensing satellites have been parked in the low earth orbit. "We do not get continuous images since the satellites keep on orbiting the earth in a different speed. They pass through one particular area once in every four or five hours. But geostationary satellites can offer continuous and uninterrupted images similar to the one given by TV cameras though with less resolution," he said. Though he refused to divulge more details, he said that the spacecraft would be operational in one or two years. Wednesday turned out to be Team Isro's day in the ISC session with Suresh V. Kibe, another satellite scientist revealing India's plan to set up a satellite-based navigation system of its own.

"The Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System with a fleet of 11 satellites will be operational by next year. The GPS aided Geo-Augmented Navigation (GAGAN) satellite which we are building will offer high resolution images to the civil aviation sector. This will bring down aviation mishaps as pilots will get sharp and clear pictures and signals from control towers," he said. Isro Satellite Centre, Bengaluru director T.K. Alex said mini and micro satellites would make space exploration a cheap affair. "They could be used for a variety of purposes. We are encouraging private educational institutions and students to take up satellite fabrication as a serious profession since as they stand to gain in terms of information and data," said Mr Alex.

ЦитироватьISRO to launch three satellite in Q1 of 2011

Thiruvananthapuram: Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), which had a recent setback with the failure of its latest communication satellite GSAT-5P, is planning three major satellite launches in the first quarter of this year.

'Resourcesat-2', an advanced remote sensing satellite, 'Youthsat', a participatory scientific mission with payloads from both Russia and India, and X-sat, Singapore's first indigenous satellite, will be the launched on board of home made PSLV C-16 in February, March and April, ISRO Chairman Dr K Radhakrishnan said here.

"We have three major missions slated to be done in coming February, March and April months. Among them Resourcesat-2 is meant to replace Resourcesat-1, launched in 2003, to provide data connectivity," Dr Radhakrishnan during his presidential address to an international conference on Contemporary trends in Optics and Optoelectronics at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre here.

"The 'Youthsat' would carry a payload developed by the students of Moscow University in Russia," he told the meet organised by Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) and Optical Society of India (OSI).

"PSLV-C16 vehicle has already been assembled at the space port at Sreeharikota. Resourcesat-2 and Youthsat are getting ready for shipment to SHAR from the ISRO's centres. Both these satellites carry a host of advance optical payloads," he said.

Another communication satellite GSAT-8 is getting ready for launch onboard Ariane-5 in April-May 2011.

Alluding to the recent failure of GSLV, the Chairman said "We have several success stories and a couple of failures. We will learn from our failures," he said.

The cause of the failure had been pinpointed and could tell anything about it only after detailed evaluation and studies, Radhakrishnan said.

"We had 9 launches and realised 9 spacecrafts including the path-breaking Chandrayaan during the four years 2006-09. We saw 7 successful missions of PSLV including two dedicated commercial launches, and 2 missions of GSLV with a failure of GSLV F02 in 2006 and a partial success of GSLV-F04 in 2007. We realised 7 Satellites including the high resolution Сartosat-2 series that brought us into an exclusive club globally," he said detailing India's space programmes in the last five years.

"Globally our efforts have been recognized. Several of world s major space powers Russia, USA and France -have showed keen interest in partnering with India on several fronts in space," he said.

Microwave Remote Sensing Satellite -RISAT-1, Meteorological Satellite INSAT-3D, Communication Satellites such as GSAT-7 and GSAT-10 and two Indo-French Joint Missions viz., Megha-Tropiques and SARAL are the agency's major plans in the next year, Radhakrishnan said.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: ISRO has planned three major missions, including launch of advanced remote sensing satellite Resourcesat-2, in the next three months.

"The coming three months are going to be eventful with three major milestones to be achieved," ISRO chairman K Radhakrishnan told an international conference here.

He said homegrown PSLV-C16 launch vehicle has been assembled at Sriharikota spaceport and Resourcesat-2 and Youthsat, with advanced optical payloads, are being readied for shipment there for launch.

PSLV-C17 assembly would commence soon for geostationary transfer orbit mission to launch GSAT-12, a communication satellite, to be immediately followed by four PSLVs and flight testing of Indian cryogenics stage after tests on ground.

Another communication satellite GSAT-8 is getting ready for launch onboard European rocket Ariane-5 in April-May 2011.

'Resourcesat-2', 'Youthsat', a participatory scientific mission with payloads from Russia and India and X-sat, Singapore's first indigenous satellite, will be launched on board homegrown PSLV C-16, he said.

"We have three major missions slated to be done in coming February, March and April. Among them Resourcesat-2 is meant to replace Resourcesat-1, launched in 2003, to provide data connectivity," Radhakrishnan said.

'Youthsat' would carry a payload developed by students of Moscow university in Russia," he told the meet organised by Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) and Optical Society of India (OSI).

ISRO to launch remote sensing Resourcesat in February

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is getting ready to launch Resourcesat 2, a remote sensing earth observation satellite, by the end of February, officials said Monday.

Remote sensing satellites send back pictures and other data for various uses. India is a major player in providing such data in the global market.

Resourcesat-2 will replace Resourcesat-1 launched in 2003, which has outlived its original mission life of five years.

According to ISRO officials, the satellite has reached the Sriharikota rocket launch centre, around 80 kms from Chennai, and tests are being conducted.

The satellites will be carried by ISRO's polar satellite launch vehicle (PSLV). The launch will be between February 20 and 25 in the morning. The PSLV will also be carrying two other small satellites made in Singapore and Russia.

With nine orbiting satellites and the tenth one to join in February, India has the largest number of remote sensing satellites in the world providing images in a variety of spatial resolutions. The remote sensing satellites currently operational are: Resourcesat-1, Cartosat-2B, Oceansat-2, RISAT-2, Cartosat-2A, IMS-1, Cartosat-2, Resourcesat-1 and TES.

For some time Resourcesat-2 and Resourcesat-1 will work together before the latter is fully replaced, the official said.
