On the PSOM-XL motor fabricated by Ramakrishna Engineering Company, Veeraraghavan said while the six solid propellant strap-on motors in the standard PSLV carried nine tonnes of propellant, the new version PSOM-XL with a length of 13.5 metre had the capacity to carry a 12-tonne propellant. It would boost the capability of PSLV from 1,450 kg to 1,750 kg for a sun synchronous orbit. "The motor will be used in the launch of PSLV C18 and PSLV C19 in the middle of next year," he added.

ЦитироватьCHENNAI: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is expected to close 2010 with the launch of communication satellite GSAT-5P, which will replace the ageing INSAT 2E to ensure continuity of service for telecom and television channel customers.

ISRO is also likely to open the New Year with the launch of Resourcesat-2, an earth observation satellite.

First to escape the earth's gravity sometime between Dec 10 and 15 will be ISRO's heavy rocket called the geosynchronous satellite launch vehicle (GSLV) carrying GSAT-5P to replace the ageing INSAT 2E launched in 1999.

"The 2,300-kg satellite with 36 transponders will provide continuity of service to our telecom and television channel customers," S Satish, ISRO's director (publications and public relations), said.

Satish said a small snag that was detected earlier in one of the GSLV rocket's sub-systems has been set right.

Though ISRO is aiming to send its remote sensing/earth observation satellite Resourcesat-2 before this year on its lighter rocket polar satellite launch vehicle (PSLV), officials do not discount the possibility of a launch early next year.

Piggy-backing on it will be two small satellites made in Singapore and Russia.

Remote sensing satellites send back earth pictures and other data for use. India is a major player in vending such data in the global market.

"Resourcesat-2 will be the replacement for Resourcesat-1 launched in 2003. For some time, both will work together," Satish added.

ISRO this year launched two major satellites - communication satellite GSAT-4 and remote sensing satellite Cartosat-2. While the launch of GSAT-4 failed as the GSLV rocket carrying it plunged into the sea due to engine failure, Cartosat-2 was placed successfully in the orbit.

ЦитироватьISRO to launch three satellites for studying climate change

Chennai: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will launch three satellites — Megha-Tropiques, SARAL and RISAT-1 — next year to study climate change, said its Chairman K. Radhakrishnan on Saturday.

Inaugurating an international conference on 'Recent advances in space technology services and climate change – 2010,' at Sathyabama University, he said that ISRO and the French National Space Agency (CNES) would be launching Megha-Tropiques by mid-2011 to study tropical climate. While two sensors were developed by CNES, ISRO jointly worked on a sensor. Another ISRO-CNES mission to be launched next year is SARAL (Satellite for Argos and Altika) for seasonal forecasting, oceanography and climate studies.

The ISRO would provide the platform and overseeing satellite operations, including launch, orbit acquisition and station keeping. The CNES would provide the payload and process data.

The Indo-French joint missions are part of the synergy among nations to work in the areas of space technology and climate change, he said.

India had been invited to be part of the International Space Station and discussions were on the nature of scientific experiments to be conducted on board.

Also to be launched next year, the Radar Imaging Satellite (RISAT-1), a microwave remote sensing satellite, will provide all-weather surveillance. Hylas, a communication satellite, would be launched on November 27; GSAT -5P in December and RESOURCESAT- 2 along with YOUTHSAT in January 2011.

Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) director P.S. Veeraraghavan said that ISRO was working on semi-cryogenic, green liquid and green solid propellants for reduction of green house gases, which could reduce cost of launch operations.

National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) director V. Jayaraman said the space technology could provide unbiased inputs to find out climate change variables and monitor change. Professors Matthias Roth and Wong Nyuk Hien of the National University of Singapore delivered special lectures.

Updated on Friday, November 19, 2010, 21:21

Bangalore: India's premier space agency ISRO will launch Resourcesat-2 advanced remote sensing satellite on board home-made PSLV rocket in January.

The Bangalore-headquartered space agency held a mission readiness review in the Sriharikota spaceport in Andhra Pradesh today during which ISRO Chairman K Radhakrishnan and top ISRO officials were present.

The standard PSLV-C16, with six strap-on boosters, would carry Resourcesat-2, auxiliary spacecraft of Youthsat and X-sat.

Resourcesat-2 is a follow on mission to Resourcesat-1 to provide data continuity. Resourcesat-1, launched in October 2003, has outlived its designed mission life of five years and is working satisfactorily, ISRO sources said.

Youthsat, a microsatellite, is a participatory scientific mission with a payload from Russia and two from India. It is a micro satellite carrying scientific payloads. X-sat is Singapore's first indigenous satellite.

Meanwhile, ISRO is slated to hold tomorrow a mission readiness review vis-a-vis GSLV mission, which is expected in the last week of December. GSLV would carry on board GSAT-5P, an exclusive C-band communication satellite with a designedmission life of 12 years.

(AFP) – 2 days ago

VIENNA — Austria will launch its first ever satellites into space next year to measure variations in the brilliance of stars, a project leader from the Technical University (TU) of Graz announced Friday.

The two cube-shaped satellites -- each measuring just 20 centimetres (eight inches) per side and weighing seven kilograms (15 pounds) -- are part of a joint project with Canada and Poland entitled "BRITE" (Bright Target Explorer).

Developed by TU Graz and the Technical University of Vienna, in collaboration with the University of Toronto in Canada, the two mini-satellites will measure the light intensity of stars with more precision than was possible until now, Otto Koudelka from TU Graz said Friday.

This could help explain how stars are formed and reveal further clues about the history of the universe, he explained.

The Austrian satellites will be launched aboard an Indian rocket in late July, although a clear date as not yet been set.

Four further satellites, two from Poland and two from Canada, will then follow in 2012.

According to Koudelka, this would be the first project involving multiple mini-satellites with the same mission.

"That way, we can maximise the observation time, the scientific gains will be that much greater," he told the Austria Press Agency.

Ground control stations in Graz and Vienna, as well as compatible stations in Poland and Canada, will download data from the satellites.

The satellites' life expectancy was estimated at two years, but the chances were "very good they will survive much longer," said Koudelka.

30.09.2010 13:40
The late science fiction author StanisBaw Lem is favourite to have the first Polish satellite named after him.

Lem's name currently tops the list in an internet poll launched on the Education Ministry web site. The vote closes at midnight tonight and the results are to be announced on October 7.

So far close to 45 percent of more than 45,000 votes cast on the webpage indicate StanisBaw Lem, who died in 2006, a clear leader. In second place is space travel pioneer Ary Sternfeld, born in Sieradz, and third is 17th century GdaDsk astronomer Jan Hevelius.

The first Polish satellite will be placed in orbit in 2011 and a second in 2013.

Both are being built by the Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences with the Copernicus Astronomy Centre in ToruD, in cooperation with space research institutes in Vienna, Graz, Toronto and Montreal.

The launch will be made from the Sriharikota spaceport in India.

The satellites are part of the international BRITE project (Bright Target Explorer Constellation), a programme carrying out continuous observation of 286 brightest stars in the sky.

The cost of the project is 14.2 million zloty (more than 3.5 million euro), Poland's biggest outlay to astronomy and space research since 1986.

India to launch advanced communication satellite Dec 20

CHENNAI: India will Dec 20 launch the advanced GSAT-5P communication satellite that will replace the ageing INSAT 2E and ensure continuity of telecom and television services, an official said.

"The launch window will open at 1600 hours on Dec 20," Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) director (publications and public relations) S. Satish told IANS.

Carrying the 2,300 kg GSAT-5P with 36 transponders, India's heavy rocket - the geosynchronous satellite launch vehicle (GSLV) - will blast off from ISRO's second launch pad at Sriharikota, around 80 km from here between 4 and 4.30 p.m.

According to officials, the fully assembled rocket was moved to the launch pad and anchored there Sunday morning around 7.45 a.m. The satellite was placed inside the heat shield last week.

ISRO officials told IANS that the process of filling the liquid and cryogenic fuel will begin around 30 hours before the actual flight when the countdown begins.

Prior to the countdown, ISRO will test the rocket's various systems. Its full systems test will be done Monday (Dec 13).

According to ISRO officials, the launch rehearsal will be held on Dec 17 but without the liquid and cryogenic fuel.

"If satisfied with the rocket's condition then the final clearance for the flight will be given. Then the rocket will be `armed'- connecting of all pyro systems to the batteries - so that they ignite when the command is given," said an ISRO official.

ISRO is also likely to begin the New Year with the launch of Resourcesat-2, an earth observation satellite.

Remote sensing satellites send back pictures and other data for use. India is a major player in vending such data in the global market.

"Resourcesat-2 will be the replacement for Resourcesat-1, launched in 2003. For some time, both will work together," Satish added.

Piggy-backing on it will be two small satellites made in Singapore and Russia .

The satellites will be carried by ISRO's another rocket called polar satellite launch vehicle (PSLV) and the launch date is around Jan 20.

According to ISRO officials the Resourcesat-2 and another small satellite are expected to reach Sriharikota by December end.

ISRO this year launched two major satellites - communication satellite GSAT-4 and remote sensing satellite Cartosat-2. While the launch of GSAT-4 failed as the GSLV rocket carrying it plunged into the sea due to an engine failure, Cartosat-2 was placed successfully in the orbit.
