IIT-Kanpur's indigenously built nano satellite 'Jugnu' may be successfully launched by the end of June this year from Sriharikota if everything goes according to plan.

Scientists from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) had visited the institute last month and had given a green signal to the engineering model. The flight model is being assembled in Bengaluru.

'Jugnu' is a nano-satellite built by the students and faculty of IIT Kanpur under the guidance of Indian Space Research Organisation.

'Jugnu', developed by using indigenous technology, weighs 3kg and is 34cm long and 10 cm wide. An estimated amount of Rs 2.5 crore was spent to develop the satellite.

The development of the concept 'Jugnu' geared up in the year 2008. In 2008, IIT Kanpur and ISRO had signed a MoU under which the engineering institution was to build a nano-satellite.

The three-foot-long time capsule is made of a special kind of copper and it will preserve the data stored inside for thousands of years.

The payload of the satellite includes an indigenously designed camera for near remote sensing and a GPS receiver. 'Jugnu' will transmit blinking signal, round the clock, all over the earth. The designed life span of the satellite is proposed to be one year.

Jugnu's mission will serve the following applications;

1. Micro Imaging System.
2. GPS receiver for locating the position of satellite in the orbit.
3. MEMS based IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit).

The satellite will revolve around the Earth 15 times in a day in polar orbit and will be visible over Kanpur for three to four times for a total of 20 minutes.

It will help in gathering prior information regarding flood, drought and disaster management. It will study vegetation patterns, water bodies and soil using a Near-IR camera.

With the help of micro imaging and micro electronic system, it will transfer the images to the IIT Kanpur campus.

'Jugnu' will be launched from Satish Dhawan Space Centre (also known as SHAR, located in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh) by ISRO's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).


After its launch, the satellite will be continuously monitored and controlled by ground station located on the campus.

'Jugnu' has set the path for such inspiring innovations in the future and has also Strengthen activities in MEMS sensor based technology applications.

Low weights, cost effective nano-satellite like 'Jugnu' have significant role to play in the cost reduction, experimentation, reduction in the development and testing time for the new technologies and will significantly change the satellite development activity in the future.

ISRO will spend Rs 426 crore for the country's second unmanned moon mission -- Chandrayaan-2, a senior scientist of the space agency said here today.

This is an additional Rs 40 crore from Rs 386 crore spent earlier on the first mission, Project Director Mylswamy Annadurai told reporters here on the sidelines of a function.

Chandrayaan-2, which is expected to be launched in September 2013, is a lunar landing mission, while the earlier one (Chandrayaan-1) was only an orbiter, Annadurai said.

ISRO had terminated Chandrayaan-1 odyssey on August 30 2009, a year after it was launched in October, after it failed to re-establish contact, lost the previous day, with the lunar craft.

The second mission, which will have an orbiter, a lander and a rover, is planned to be launched onboard Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota.

Preparations to launch the 1.2-tonne Resourcesat-2 spacecraft onboard the polar launch satellite vehicle (PSLV-C16) were progressing well at the Satish Dhawan space centre at Sriharikota, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said.

The polar orbit rocket will also carry a 92 kg Youthsat, a joint Indo-Russian nanosatellite for stellar and atmospheric studies, and a 105 kg microsatellite X-sat for imaging applications, built by the Singapore-based Nanyang Technological University.

'The launch authorisiation board will review the readiness of the rocket, satellites and ground stations April 16. The countdown will begin April 18 for the scheduled lift-off April 20 at 10.12 a.m.,' the statement said.

The upcoming event will be the space agency's first launch mission after the failure of its geo-satellite launch vehicle (GSLV) Dec 25 due to snapping of 10 connectors within a minute after the 418-tonne rocket took off from the spaceport, carrying an advanced communication satellite.

CHENNAI: India will launch five satellites by June, including one for advanced remote sensing and two for communications, say officials of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

The first launch, scheduled for April 20, will be of Resourcesat-2, intended for study and management of natural resources and sending back pictures and other data, and two other satellites.

  India has the largest constellation of remote sensing satellites in the world providing imagery in a variety of spatial resolutions from better than a metre ranging up to 500 metres, and is a major player in vending such data in the global market.

ISRO will then launch two communication satellites - GSAT-8 from French Guyana and GSAT-12 from India - by June this year. These will serve the needs of the telecommunication and television sectors.

Speaking to IANS, an ISRO official, who did not want to be named, said GSAT-8 will augment the growing demand for communication transponders (automatic receivers and transmitters for communication and broadcast of signals).

With India in the process of developing a rocket that could carry a three-tonne satellite, GSAT-8 will be launched by Ariane rocket from French Guyana some time this May.

Following that will be the launch of GSAT-12 using the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) from ISRO's rocket port at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh, around 80 km from Chennai.

Weighing 1,425 kg, GSAT-12, with 12 extended C band transponders, is expected to be launched some time in June.

The satellite is expected to serve the Very Small Aperture Terminal ( VSAT) sector, used to transmit data like point of sale transactions or to provide satellite internet access and others.

Though PSLV rockets are largely used by ISRO to launch remote sensing/earth observation satellites, it has also been used to put into orbit communication satellites in geo transfer orbit (GTO).

According to ISRO officials, the PSLV rocket that will carry GSAT-12 will weigh over 300 tonnes - heavier than the standard PSLV rocket that weigh around 290 tonnes at lift off.

The rocket will be powered with much longer strap-on motors containing more fuel.

ISRO is also mulling the launch of another remote sensing satellite, Megha-Tropiques in July, to study and understand the life cycle of convective systems and their role in the associated energy and moisture budget of the atmosphere in the tropical regions.

About Isro's unsuccessful GSLV F-06 mission, Mr P. S. Veeraraghavan, director, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, said the problem had occurred after an inadvertent separation of shroud. "Isro is re-working on the design specifications and planning for a test flight by the end of the first half of 2012," he said.

РИГА, 21 апр - РИА Новости, Вадим Радионов. Запуск первого латвийского спутника Venta-1 с космодрома в Индии на орбиту планируется осуществить до конца текущего года, сообщил журналистам в четверг директор Вентспилсского международного центра радиоастрономии (ВМЦР) Валдис Авотиньш.

Venta-1 изначально планировался как спутник логистики, или автоматической идентификации. С его помощью, используя небольшой передатчик, можно будет определять географические координаты конкретных объектов.

Спутник создается в сотрудничестве с Бременским университетом и другим партнерами. Общие затраты по проекту составляют около 350 тысяч латов (700 тысяч долларов).

Спутник планировалось запустить еще в 2009 году, задержка была связана с финансовыми проблемами, получением необходимых разрешений и рядом других причин.

Уникальный для Латвии проект космических технологий реализуется при поддержке министерства образования и науки республики. Спутник, проект которого разработан в Латвии, строится на германском предприятии OHB-System AG.
