Spacecraft formation flying (SFF) is of huge importance to the aerospace and space community. Not the stuff of science-fiction, SFF involves flying multiple small satellites together, to deliver benefits which far outweigh a single larger craft or space station. The first autonomous formation flying earth science mission was in 196 and NASA now has 35 SFF mission sets. By networking several smaller and cheaper craft, scientists can make simultaneous measurements that enable higher resolution astronomical imagery, provide robust and fault-tolerant spacecraft system architectures, and enable complex earth science and space science networks dispersed over clusters of satellites in space.
This is the first book to introduce and explore SFF. It is a topic of enormous importance to aerospace engineers, astrodynamicists, satellite engineers, astronomers, physicists, and applied mathematicions. This book provides a complete introduction to the subject and is supported by graduate level student exercises plus Matlab and Maple code sets for running SFF simulations.

NASA's space and Earth science program is composed of two principal components: spaceflight projects and mission-enabling activities. Most of the budget of NASA's Science Mission Directorate (SMD) is applied to spaceflight missions, but NASA identifies nearly one quarter of the SMD budget as "mission enabling." The principal mission-enabling activities, which traditionally encompass much of NASA's research and analysis (R&A) programs, include support for basic research, theory, modeling, and data analysis; suborbital payloads and flights and complementary ground-based programs; advanced technology development; and advanced mission and instrumentation concept studies.

While the R&A program is essential to the development and support of NASA's diverse set of space and Earth science missions, defining and articulating an appropriate scale for mission-enabling activities have posed a challenge throughout NASA's history. This volume identifies the appropriate roles for mission-enabling activities and metrics for assessing their effectiveness. Furthermore, the book evaluates how, from a strategic perspective, decisions should be made about balance between mission-related and mission-enabling elements of the overall program as well as balance between various elements within the mission-enabling component. Collectively, these efforts will help SMD to make a good program even better.

Since their first launches in 1958, pioneering spacecraft have made many trail-blazing discoveries in exploring the Solar System. Initial attempts of our nation to probe interplanetary space were with spacecraft named Pioneer. The first of several small spacecraft was launched successfully by the Air Force Ballistic Missile Division in November 1958. One of these spacecraft escaped completely from Earth's gravity and went into solar orbit. It was the first interplanetary spacecraft. Subsequently, NASA's Pioneers 6 through 9 made major discoveries about interplanetary particles and fields and the solar wind. Pioneers 10 and 11 explored the asteroid belt and the magnetospheres and physical natures of the giant outer planets Jupiter and Saturn.

Much has changed, both in the space community and in the larger world, in the years since the first edition of this classic, best-selling book appeared.
