Opportunity suddenly came to a stop last Wednesday, her Sol 584, as she was heading to the 'onramp' of the Erebus Highway. No one knows why yet, but the rover experienced an unexpected reset. In other words, her computer re-booted. When that happens, the rover basically stops all activity and waits. "We're in the process of trying to understand why this happened," said Callas. "The vehicle is otherwise healthy we believe, but she is currently stopped where she is and is in quiescent state. We're asking her to return more diagnostic information before we proceed from here." So for now, Opportunity is taking an unplanned rest, about 150 meters from Erebus Crater.   :cry:

In its first 562 martian days, or sols, after landing in Mars' Meridiani Planum region, NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity drove a total of 5.74 kilometers

2. Investigation:


After months spent crossing a sea of rippled sands, Opportunity reached an outcrop in August 2005 and began investigating exposures of sedimentary rocks, intriguing rind-like features that appear to cap the rocks, and cobbles that dot the martian surface locally.


3. Complecations:


This false-color panoramic image, taken on martian day, or sol, 561 (Aug. 22, 2005) by NASA's Opportunity rover, shows the nature of the outcrop rocks that the rover is encountering on its southward journey across the martian plains to "Erebus Crater."

Opportunity is healthy and traveling westward around "Erebus Crater." The rover is running in restricted sols, so the team is able to drive it only every other sol and has been doing so. On sol 601, Opportunity drove 34 meters (112 feet).
On sol 603, the team planned a 45-meter (148-foot) drive. However, after the first 5-meter (16-foot) segment, the onboard slip check reported 44.5 percent slip. Because slip limits had been set to 40 percent, the drive was successfully stopped. On sol 605, the rover drove 5.3 meters (17 feet) back to outcrop material.

Note: The onboard slip check uses visual odometry to compare nearby features and determine the actual distance traveled. Software computes the amount of slip based on the difference between the actual distance traveled versus commanded wheel rotations. The team has defined a maximum allowable percentage of slip, and if the computed slippage exceeds the maximum allowable, further driving is precluded.
