Controllers driving the Spirit Mars Exploration Rover will get some extra mileage in the coming weeks as it continues the search for silica deposits, following an apparently fortuitous wind that blew accumulated dust off its solar arrays.

Fresh off a troublesome loss of control in January (Aerospace DAILY, Feb. 6), Spirit's operators at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) noted a 30-watt-hour increase in Spirit's power supply, which they believe is the result of lower dust accumulation on the arrays that generate the rover's electricity.

The increase gives Spirit about 240 watt-hours a day to work with, up from about 210. Overall the rover needs about 180 watt-hours per day for "basic survival" and communications, which means the amount of power available above that has roughly doubled.

"We will be able to use this energy to do significantly more driving," said JPL's Colette Lohr, a rover mission manager. "Our drives have been averaging about 50 minutes, and energy has usually been the limiting factor. We may be able to increase that to drives of an hour and a half."

Last month Spirit failed to respond to the daily driving commands radioed from JPL, setting off a round of testing and diagnostics that led mission managers to conclude a cosmic-ray hit had probably shut down the rover's flash memory. With the memory temporarily out of commission, the rover couldn't store the commands.

Tests also suggested Spirit's accelerometers were probably off by about 3 degrees, skewing its orientation on the surface.

Since the end of January the rover has been moving again, looking for high concentrations of silica to the north away from the "Home Plate" feature. Scientists believe such deposits may be evidence of ancient steam vents or hot springs.

Controllers first noticed the extra power on Feb. 6, and quantified it over the following two days. They believe that the wind cleaning boosted the amount of sunlight penetrating dust on the arrays from 25 percent to 28 percent.

Spirit and its twin Opportunity have been operating on the surface for more than five years, even though they were originally planned for a three-month nominal service life there.

Spirit Sets Distance Record For Five-Wheel Driving

Spirit is making good progress around Home Plate to the west. After getting clear of troublesome rocks, Spirit drove 13.8 meters (45.3 feet) on Sol 1854 (March 21, 2009).

The next drive, on Sol 1856 (March 23, 2009) , achieved a new distance record for five-wheel driving. Spirit drove 25.82 meters (84.7 feet), beating the old record by about a meter.

Spirit completed another drive of 12.9 meters (42.3 feet) on Sol 1858 (March 25, 2009).

The sol ahead will see the building of the new R9.3 flight software on board the rover. The rover will boot the new software on the subsequent sol.

As of Sol 1858 (March 25, 2009), Spirit's solar array energy production is 233 watt-hours. Atmospheric opacity (tau) remains elevated at 1.15.

The dust factor on the solar array, 0.309, means that 30.9 percent of sunlight hitting the solar array penetrates the layer of accumulated dust on the array. The rover is in good health in spite of dusty skies. Spirit's total odometry is 7,665.02 meters (4.76 miles).

NASA rover resurrected twice over Easter weekend

In what could be an attempt to trump Jesus of Nazareth's record for divine Easter resurrections, NASA has said its Mars Exploration Rover Spirit mysteriously rebooted twice during the holiday weekend.

"While we don't have an explanation yet, we do know that Spirit's batteries are charged, the solar arrays are producing energy and temperatures are well within allowable ranges," said John Callas of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in a statement.

Марсоход Spirit забыл собранные данные

Инженеры NASA обнаружили неполадки в запоминающей системе марсохода Spirit: в пятницу 17 апреля 2009 года аппарат не сохранил собранные за день данные. Кроме этого на последующих выходных произошло еще несколько несанкционированных перезагрузок бортового компьютера. Сообщение о неполадках появилось на сайте Space.com.

Согласно программе исследований, вся собранная за день марсоходом Spirit информация сохраняется на флеш-память, которая способна хранить данные и при отсутствии питания. Однако 17 апреля этого не произошло.

В настоящее время инженеры космического агентства проводят диагностику марсохода. В частности, они хотят выяснить, связаны ли несанкционированные перезагрузки бортового компьютера с потерей данных. После перезапуска марсоход перешел в автономный безопасный режим. Пока аппарат находился в этом режиме, инженерам не удалось обнаружить никаких неполадок в аппарате.

Это не первые подобные неполадки с марсоходом в последнее время. Ранее сообщалось, что 11 и 12 апреля 2009 года компьютер аппарата также перезагружался без команды с Земли. Кроме этого 25 января аппарат также не сохранил в память собранные за день данные и не смог определить свое местоположение на Марсе после команды с Земли.

The rover is about two-thirds of the way there and it's only a matter of negotiating the difficult terrain.

The agenda for Spirit in coming sols is a lot like that of its twin: "Drive, drive, drive," as Arvidson put it. "Our intention is to continue to the south," confirmed Squyres. "Right now I would say there are no indications that suggest we cannot continue to the south. We don't view the path to be blocked in any substantive way right now. We'll just press ahead. If we learn more and the situation changes, we'll adapt to it. We always do."

Meanwhile, the engineers are ready for more of same reboot and amnesia anomalies. "As strange as it may seem, I am actually hoping that it does, because I want us to have a chance to identify what's happening so we can fix it," said Nelson. "We need data and we're going to run this rover as if it's problem free until trouble shows up again."

Structure, stratigraphy, and origin of Husband Hill, Columbia Hills, Gusev Crater, Mars

...The strike and dip of lithologic units imaged in stereo by the Spirit rover in the Columbia Hills using three-dimensional imaging software shows that measured dips (15–32°) for bedding on the main edifice of the Columbia Hill are steeper than local topography (<8–10°).

Outcrops measured on West Spur are conformable in strike with shallower dips (7–15°) than observed on Husband Hill.

Dips are consistent with observed strata draping the Columbia Hills. Initial uplift was likely related either to the formation of the Gusev Crater central peak or ring or through mutual interference of overlapping crater rims.

Uplift was followed by subsequent draping by a series of impact and volcaniclastic materials that experienced temporally and spatially variable aqueous infiltration, cementation, and alteration episodically during or after deposition.

West Spur likely represents a spatially isolated depositional event. Erosion by a variety of processes, including mass wasting, removed tens of meters of materials and formed the Tennessee Valley primarily after deposition.

This was followed by eruption of the Adirondack-class plains basalt lava flows which embayed the Columbia Hills.

Minor erosion, impact, and aeolian processes have subsequently modified the Columbia Hills....

А почему не центральная горка метеоритного кратера? Вулканические породы вполне могли быть (и даже наверняка были) выковыряны из более ранней поверхности взрывом образовавшим кратер.

Возникает гнусное подозрение: а об этом часом не забыли? Поглощённые малым масштабом изученой територии не забыли ли часом что в целом представляет собой изучаемая местность?

Марсоход Spirit, который в настоящее время работает на Красной планете, застрял в песке. Об этом сообщается в пресс-релизе Лаборатории реактивного движения (Jet Propulsion Laboratory - JPL). Пять его работающих колес (шестое перестало работать три года назад) закопались в почву почти наполовину.
По словам официальных лиц, в настоящее время команда инженеров и ученых, управляющих марсоходом, приостановила движение аппарата. Специалисты полагают, что могут пройти месяцы, прежде чем Spirit вернется к нормальной работе. Ученые планируют использовать научные инструменты марсохода для того, чтобы выяснить характеристики почвы, в которой застрял аппарат. Специалисты опасаются, что он закопался до такой степени, что его дно касается марсианского грунта. По словам исследователей, это затруднит маневры по спасению аппарата.

Напомним, что Spirit возобновил движение в конце апреля 2009 года: он оставался неподвижным с 8 апреля 2009 года. Максимальная скорость движения Spirit - 180 метров в час.
