EVA-58: For those of you scoring at home, NASA refers to today's spacewalk as EVA-58, meaning it is the 58th spacewalk using the Quest airlock in the absence of a space shuttle; by my count, this is the 139th use of Quest over all

Two NASA astronauts switched their spacesuits to battery power this morning at 7:38 a.m. EDT. Expedition 61 Flight Engineers Christina Koch and Jessica Meir are venturing out into the vacuum of space to replace a failed power controller, also known as a battery charge-discharge unit (BCDU). The BCDU regulates the charge to the batteries that collect and distribute solar power to the orbiting lab's systems.

It is the first time all spacewalkers are women and the 43rd spacewalk to include women. Watch the spacewalk on NASA TV and on the agency's website.

Koch is designated extravehicular crew member 1 (EV 1), wearing the suit with red stripes, and her helmet camera is labeled #18. Meir is designated extravehicular crew member 2 (EV 2), wearing the suit with no stripes, and with helmet camera #11.

The spacewalk is the 221st in support of station assembly, maintenance and upgrades and the eighth outside the station this year.

EVA-58: Koch and Meir have now floated out of the Quest airlock; Koch's first task is to set up the station's robot arm for today's repair work while Meir makes her way to the work site at the left end of the station's power truss

Koch is going to stand on a platform attached to the end of the Canadarm-2 robot arm -  first they'll have to attach that platform to the arm which also takes some time

Москва. 18 октября. INTERFAX.RU - Сразу две женщины в пятницу впервые в истории вышли в открытый космос с борта Международной космической станции (МКС). Это американские астронавты Кристина Кук и Джессика Меир, сообщило Национальное управление США по аэронавтике и исследованию космического пространства (NASA).

Во время выхода, который начался в 14:38 по московскому времени, американским астронавтам предстоит заменить вышедший из строя внешний энергоблок на ферме станции. Ожидается, что их пребывание за бортом МКС продлится, по меньшей мере, 6,5 часов.

В НАСА отметили, что с учетом нынешней миссии женщины за всю историю совершили 14 выходов в открытый космос, первый из них сделала советский космонавт Светлана Савицкая в 1984 году.
