A Close Look at China's First Cargo Spacecraft Tianzhou-1

China's first cargo spacecraft Tianzhou-1 will be launched in April. Many aerospace fans are curious about its features and the new technologies it has applied. Reporters from China Central Television had an interview with Tianzhou-1 designers and engineers to get a close look at the groundbreaking spacecraft. 

The Tianzhou-1 cargo spacecraft is 10.6 meters tall with a biggest diameter of 3.35 meters and a weight of 13 tons. It consisted of two parts. The upper part with a bigger diameter is designated as a warehouse while the lower part with smaller diameter will propel the spacecraft. As China's largest and heaviest spacecraft, the Tianzhou-1 can send 6.5 tons of cargo into the space. 

"The carrying capacity of Tianzhou-1 is designed according to the scale of the space station, aiming to achieve the highest carrying capacity with the lowest structural weight. There is an index for the spacecraft's carrying capacity, or payload ratio as it is called. The payload ratio of Tianzhou-1 reaches 0.48, which ranks fairly high in the world," said Bai Mingsheng, chief designer of Tianzhou-1 at China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation. 

Tianzhou-1 will provide propellant for Tiangong-2 space lab to help it maintain at a proper orbiting height. The Tianzhou-1 is expected to dock with the orbiting space lab three times before returning to earth. During the docking, a new experiment of independent quick docking will be conducted, which requires that the two spacecraft dock with each other within six hours. 

"This is a new experiment. If we can succeed, then the docking of manned spacecraft and cargo spacecraft will all use this technology. If the docking time could be cut short, our astronauts will be more comfortable, so there is a big point in doing so," said Bai. 

The Tianzhou-1 will be carried by rocket Long March-7 Yao-2.

Preparations for the launch of China's first cargo spacecraft, Tianzhou-1, are now underway at the Wenchang Satellite Launch Centre in southern China, with liftoff expected in mid-to-late April.
Both the Tianzhou-1 cargo spacecraft and its Long March 7 Y2 carrier rocket have been delivered to Wenchang on the island province of Hainan.
The Long March 7 rocket, the second of its type, will now undergo components testing, vertical assembly, and stacking of the Tianzhou-1 spacecraft. 
The mission will see Tianzhou-1 rendezvous and dock with the orbiting Tiangong-2 space lab, with the goal of testing transfer of liquid propellant in microgravity.
The process is a crucial step towards China launching and maintaining its own space station, starting with the 2018 launch of the Tianhe-1 core module.




 Preparations around China
Elsewhere, the Beijing Aerospace Control Centre (BACC) will this month conduct coordinated manoeuvres with the flight control team of the launch centre and from different departments, to simulate all procedures of the mission spacecraft Tianzhou-1 while all key stages are on the ground, BACC deputy chief engineer Sun Jun told .
Technical staff at the Xi'an Satellite Control Centre in North China have meanwhile conducted tests of the collision warning system and optimum orbit selection. 
Yuanwang tracking ships are also undergoing preparations for deployment to provide monitoring and communications for the mission. 
During the mission the spacecraft will dock with the orbiting Tiangong-2 three separate times, each testing refuelling procedures, according to an official with China's human spaceflight body.
The mission will also test a 6-hour fast automated rendezvous and docking procedure.

Launch window
Due to its nature, the mission requires a precise launch window accurate to a second, according to Wang Xiaojun, commander-in-chief of the Long March 7.
A short launch window is usual for orbital rendezvous missions, as launch is required to take place around the time the target vehicle - in this case Tiangong-2 - passes over the launch site. 
Tropical Hainan is another important issue to factor into the launch, with the island often experiencing rain and downpours. For this reason, the Long March 7 was designed to be waterproof, to cut the risk of delays due to weather.
The first Long March 7 was launched in June 2016, carrying a scale model of a reentry capsule for a new generation spacecraft, which will be able to take astronauts into deep space and perform lunar landings.
Long March 7 Y2, with a liftoff mass of around 600-tonnes and height of 53m, has been optimised to adapt to the technical requirements of Tianzhou-1.

Tianzhou-1 specs
The 13 tonne Tianzhou-1 cargo spacecraft is 10.6 metres high with a maximum diameter of 3.35 metres and consists of two parts. The upper, widest section is designated as a warehouse while the lower part provides propulsion for the spacecraft.
Tianzhou vessels can send close to 6,500 kg of cargo into the space, with Tianzhou-1 carrying around two tonnes of propellant.

Target: Tiangong-2
Tianzhou-1's target, the Tiangong-2 space lab, was launched in September and is designed specifically to test life support, repair and maintenance. In October it received two astronauts in the Shenzhou-11 mission which set a national record for human spaceflight mission duration. 
Together with Tianzhou-1, the space lab will test refuelling and resupply technologies necessary for China to keep its future space station maintained, supplied and in orbit.
The propellant provided by Tianzhou-1 will help Tiangong-2 maintain at a proper orbiting altitude, and continue running its experiments.
The mission will complete the second phase of the country's manned space project which was initiated in 1992.
The final phase - the construction of the Chinese Space Station - will begin in 2018 with the launch of the newly completed space station core module, Tianhe-1.

   "远望七号"是中国自主设计研制、具有国际先进水平的最新一代航天远洋测量船。该船船长220多米、高40余米,满载排水量近3万吨。
 
 "远望七号"自2016年7月入列以来,先后完成了"神舟十一号"与"天宫二号"交会对接、长征五号运载火箭"首飞"等3次任务,参与执行了多次关键弧段的测控。这一次,"远望七号"将执行"天舟一号"入轨段和运行段的海上测控通信任务,这也是该船首次单船执行载人航天海上测控任务。
 
   记者从中国卫星海上测控部获悉,针对新船新设备处于磨合初期的情况,工作人员已全面开展巡修巡检,逐个排查隐患问题,严密组织性能指标测试,校准设备参数,确保满足任务要求。

China's busy April


The main business will be Tianzhou-1, the first test of cargo spacecraft that marks a crucial step towards constructing a space station.

Tianzhou-1 will launch from the new coastal Wenchang Satellite Launch Centre on the second Long March 7 carrier rocket, and, once in orbit, dock with Tiangong-2, with the main aim of testing and proving liquid propellant refuelling technologies in microgravity.

Tianzhou spacecraft, much like Russian Progress or American Cygnus resupply craft, will be required to keep the future Chinese Space Station (CSS) fuelled and its astronauts fully sustained and supplied.

Preparations for launch are being finalised on Hainan Island, and the Yuanwang-7 tracking ship has started its maritime space monitoring and communication tasks ready for the mission.

Current rumours and projections suggest a launch for either April 20 or 23 and live streams of the launch will be available.

The Long March 7 rocket to launch China's first orbital resupply and refuelling mission, Tianzhou-1, has successfully undergone vertical assembly and testing at the Wenchang Satellite Launch Centre.

The Long March 7 Y2 rocket will mark the new rocket series' second launch and was delivered to Wenchang on Hainan Island in March. Vertical assembly took place at the '502' Vertical Assembly Building.

The Long March 7 Y2 will deliver Tianzhou-1 to low Earth orbit, where it will rendezvous and dock with the Tiangong-2 space lab at an altitude of 390 kilometres.

The main goal of the mission is testing the transfer of liquid propellant to Tiangong-2 in microgravity - a process crucial to China's plans for launching and maintaining its own space station, starting with the Tianhe core module in 2018.

Liftoff from Launch Pad 201 is expected in mid-to-late April, with current rumours and projections pointing to possible dates of April 20 or 23.

With a length of 10.6 metres, a maximum diameter of 3.35m and a mass of 13 tonnes, Tianzhou-1 will be China's largest spacecraft so far, with Shenzhou and Tiangong spacecraft weighing in at around 8 tonnes.

Technical improvements

According to the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA), the Long March 7 Y2 has benefited from 70 technical improvements in areas including flight timing, structure, circuit reliability, ground equipment and optimisation of processes following the debut Long March 7 launch in June last year.

The carrier rocket, which has a liftoff mass of around 600 tonnes and height of 53m, has also been optimised to adapt to the technical requirements of Tianzhou-1.

Tianzhou vessels can send close to 6,500 kg of cargo into low Earth orbit, with Tianzhou-1 carrying around two tonnes of propellant.

Preparations for the mission are ongoing at Wenchang and other places around and outside China, including tracking stations and maritime space tracking ships in the Pacific.
