Имхо, под такой вариант тяжело пару ПН подобрать.
В ЕСА первая ступень дает 40% прироста и 60% - вторая.
Если 10т на ГПО - это два любых спутника, то 8.5т - ни туда ни сюда.

Я тут погуглился и вот что вычитал:

Когда в 80ых проектировалась Ariane 5, то её делали под Hermes и из-за того что по вине 3.ступени накрылись три Ariane1..3, решили поставить на Ariane 5 не-водородную ступень - EPS.

Когда же в начале 90ых от Hermes отказались и в тоже время Ariane 4 начала летать как часики (почти), то решили для Ariane 5 сделать водородную ступень, ну а так-как разработка началась поздно, то и ESC-A запозднилась.

Это конечно тоже не какая-либо официальная версия, но звучит толково

Тут я согласен с Агентом. Ариан-5 изначально разрабатывалась под парные и даже тройные запуски на геостационар. Но когда начиналась ее разработка, типичными массами спутников связи были 2-3 т Кроме того, ступень EPS видимо была дешевле криогенной ступени Ариана-4. Однако еще до первого запуска стала очевидной тенденция роста массы спутников, поэтому еще в 95-м году была принята программа модернизации 1-й ступени (вариант Е) с увеличением грузоподъемномости до 7,5 т. Дальнейший рост массы спутников вынудил разработать и криогенную ступень ESC-A (решение принято  в 99-м), позволяющую выводить 2 пятитонных аппарата.
Имхо, в Ариан-5 был изначально заложен большой модернизационный потенциал, позволивший при изменении требований рынка увеличить массу ПГ почти вдвое без существенного увеличения стартового веса РН и с сохранением возможности дальнейшего увеличения грузоподъемности.

"The two satellites for Arianespace's upcoming dual-payload Ariane 5 ECA mission are now being integrated with the launcher hardware in separate operations at Europe's Spaceport.

Eutelsat's HOT BIRD 7A is positioned on the cone-shaped adapter that provides the interface between the spacecraft and its Ariane 5. This integration took place in the S5B high-bay area of the Spaceport's S5 payload preparation facility. Built by Alcatel Alenia Space in Cannes, France, HOT BIRD 7A will have a mass at liftoff of 4,100 kg. and will perform television and radio broadcast relay duties from its orbital position at 13 deg. East, over Gabon.

SPAINSAT is lowered into place on the SYLDA 5 dispenser system, which allows Ariane 5 to carry two satellites on a single mission. In the final payload "stack," SPAINSAT and the SYLDA 5 will be installed atop HOT BIRD 7A on the Ariane 5. During flight, SPAINSAT will be deployed first, followed by the separation of SYLDA 5. The mission will be completed with the release of HOT BIRD 7A. SPAINSAT was built by U.S. manufacturer Space Systems/Loral in California, and will be operated by Hisdesat for government telecommunications. Weighing in at 3,683 kg. for liftoff, the spacecraft will be positioned at an orbital slot of 30 deg. West, which places it over the Atlantic Ocean."

А что если на волне сотрудничества "Союз в Куру" предложить европейцам заменить эти позорные РДТТ-бустеры на Блок А от Энергии или что-то похожее? Какие тогда будут хар-ки у Арианы-5? Типа предложение, от которого нельзя отказаться. Или эти Блок А из конкурирующей Союзу конюшни? - я не в курсе...

Такой вариант, помнится, предлагался НПО "Энергия" где-то вскоре после полета "Энергии-Бурана". Кстати, тогда же на Энергии делали кой-какие работы непосредственно по Ariane V. Так что, проходили

The go-ahead is given for Ariane 5's record-setting launch

Arianespace's heavy-lift Ariane 5 mission with the Satmex 6 and Thaicom 5 satellites has been cleared for its May 27 liftoff.

The go-ahead came with today's launch readiness review, which validated the mission-ready status of the Ariane 5 ECA and its two spacecraft passengers, along with the infrastructure at Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana and the network of down-range tracking stations.

With the review's successful completion, the launch campaign has now moved into its final phase. Tomorrow, the Ariane 5 will be rolled out of the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building and transferred to the launch zone. On the May 27 launch day, the final countdown will include a last series of electrical system checks, followed by the main cryogenic stage's fueling with liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen.

Liftoff of the Ariane 5 is set at the start of a 45-minute launch window that opens at 6:09 p.m. local time in French Guiana (21h09 GMT, 04:09 p.m. in Mexico City, 11:09 p.m. in Paris and 4:09 a.m. on May 28 in Bangkok).

The combined liftoff mass of the Thaicom 5 and Satmex 6 satellites is nearly 8,200 kg., which will mark a new launch vehicle performance record to geostationary transfer orbit.

Thaicom 5 - which is the smaller of the mission's two passengers with a liftoff mass targeted at 2,766 - carries a mixed payload of 14 Ku-band transponders and 25 C-band transponders. This Alcatel Alenia Space-built relay platform will join the telecom satellite fleet of Thailand's Shin Satellite Public Company Limited, and is to be located at an orbital position of 78.5 degrees East.

Satmex 6 has a mass at liftoff of approximately 5,700 kg., and is to be utilized by Mexico's Satelites Mexicanos, S.A. de C.V. to provide coverage over the Continental United States, Mexico and South America. Produced by Space Systems/Loral, Satmex 6 carries 36 C-band and 24 Ku-band transponders, and will operate from an orbital slot of 113 deg. West.

A record-setting Ariane 5 moves to the launch zone

Preparations for Arianespace's dual-satellite Ariane 5 mission shifted to the launch zone today as the completed heavy-lift vehicle was rolled out at Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana.

Riding atop its massive launch table, Ariane 5 emerged from the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building at 10:45 a.m. (local time in French Guiana), and covered the 2.5 km. distance to the ELA-3 launch zone in one hour.

In the photo above, Ariane 5 approaches its final position at the ELA-3 complex's fixed tower (which is painted white with the red stripe), where the launch table will locked into position over the massive flame trenches. The dual rail system that links the Final Assembly Building (visible near the horizon in the background) with the launch zone is evident in this photograph, including the curved section of track that leads into the ELA-3 facility.

The final countdown will begin at 11 hr. 30 minutes before tomorrow's launch, which remains on schedule for a liftoff at 6:09 p.m. local time in French Guiana (21h09 GMT, 04:09 p.m. in Mexico City, 11:09 p.m. in Paris and 4:09 a.m. on May 28 in Bangkok).

This Ariane 5 flight carries another record-setting payload mass for a mission to geostationary transfer orbit, with the Thaicom 5 and Satmex 6 satellites' combined weight totaling nearly 8,200 kg.

The Ariane 5 ECA is ready for liftoff from the Spaceport's ELA-3 launch zone.

Arianespace's dual-satellite mission with a record payload is on schedule for a liftoff this evening from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana.
 
Fueling of the Ariane 5 ECA's cryogenic main stage with liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen began during mid-day at the Spaceport's ELA-3 launch zone.

Liftoff is set at the start of a 45-minute launch window that opens at 6:09 p.m. local time in French Guiana (21h09 GMT, 04:09 p.m. in Mexico City, 11:09 p.m. in Paris and 4:09 a.m. on May 28 in Bangkok).

The Thaicom 5 and Satmex 6 satellites to be lofted by today's mission have a combined mass of nearly 8,200 kg., which will mark a new launch vehicle performance record to geostationary transfer orbit.

Satmex 6 is installed in the upper passenger position of Ariane 5's dual-payload deployment system, and will be released at 27 minutes into the mission. With a liftoff mass of approximately 5,700 kg., Satmex 6 is the heavier of the two spacecraft carried by Ariane 5. Built by Space Systems/Loral of California, Satmex 6 will be operated by Mexico's Satelites Mexicanos, S.A. de C.V. for coverage over the Continental United States, Mexico and South America. The satellite is equipped with 36 C-band and 24 Ku-band transponders, and will operate from an orbital slot of 113 deg. West.

Thailand's Thaicom 5 has a liftoff mass targeted at 2,766 and carries a mixed payload of 14 Ku-band transponders and 25 C-band transponders. The Alcatel Alenia Space-built relay platform will join the telecom satellite fleet of Shin Satellite Public Company Limited, and is to be located at an orbital position of 78.5 degrees East. It will provide telecom and television services throughout the Asia/Pacific region.

A familiar face in attendance to watch Friday's launch was NASA Administrator Mike Griffin. Later this year, an Ariane 5 rocket will ferry to orbit the first European-built Automated Transfer Vehicle cargo resupply freighter for the International Space Station.
