First Stage Landing Video

Below is a look at the original video data from the first stage landing, recovered from the Falcon 9 onboard camera and shot right before splashdown:

Our software team has spent the last week trying to repair this footage--below is our best effort so far:

In an effort to see if the video can be improved further, below are links to both the original data file as well as the repaired source file.  The file labeled "raw.ts" is an extraction of the raw MPEG bitstream from the rocket. Our software team attempted to repair the data, resulting in the "repair1.ts" file, and the partial video above.  We welcome anyone to download the raw file to make improvements directly—if you are successful, please contact us at media@spacex.com.

"Bad news about Kicksat.  The timer for the Sprite deployment reset on 30th April, apparently due to a cosmic ray hit.  This means that that deployment is postponed from tomorrow to May 16th.  The current atmospheric decay estimate for the satellite is May 14th.

Early on April 30, KickSat experienced a reset of its watchdog microcontroller likely due to a radiation-related upset. This re-set caused the timer to go back to 16 days – pushing the deployment of the Sprites to May 16 unless the batteries reach 8 Volts before that to send a deployment command to KickSat.

"Unfortunately, it looks like KickSat will most likely reenter and burn up before the 16th. We've spent the last couple of days here at Cornell trying to think of every possible contingency, but it seems there aren't very many options right now," Zac Manchester, leader of the KickSat project reported last week.

As of May 8, KickSat was in an orbit of 240 by 267 Kilometers and was expected to decay within ten days as the satellite's low weight and large cross-section create a relatively fast decay caused by drag in the uppermost regions of Earth's atmosphere.

USSTRATCOM has issued a decay prediction on May 7th predicting re-entry on May 10 while orbital propagation software predicts re-entry around May 14 based on the latest orbital elements. Entry predictions will become more refined as the event approaches.

"While the situation looks a little bleak, there is still some hope that the batteries may recharge sufficiently to command the satellite," Manchester wrote. "There is also a small chance that KickSat could remain in orbit until the 16th, at which point the timer would set off the deployment as originally planned."
