InSight's cruise stage has jettisoned from the lander, heading for a destructive entry in the Martian atmosphere. The heat shield containing the lander is now about five minutes from atmospheric entry.

Entry interface. Flying 77 miles (124 kilometers) above Mars at a speed of 12,300 mph (5.5 kilometers) per second, InSight has encountered the outer traces of the Martian atmosphere.

Four minutes until landing. Ground controllers at JPL continue receiving a carrier beacon from InSight, suggesting all is OK aboard the spacecraft. Deployment of InSight's parachute is expect in about one minute.

Telemetry from the MarCO spacecraft indicates InSight encountered about 8 g of deceleration.

Parachute deployment confirmed! InSight has opened its 39-foot-diameter (11.8-meter) supersonic parachute. Activation of InSight's landing radar and an auxiliary battery is expected momentarily.

Heat shield separation commanded. InSight has commanded release of its heat shield, which is no longer needed. This exposes the craft's landing legs for extension.
