ЦитироватьInSight Countdown to T-Zero: From the West Coast to the Red Planet

NASAKennedy

Опубликовано: 2 мая 2018 г.

NASA's next Red Planet explorer has arrived at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California - a big step forward in the countdown to T-zero. The spacecraft is called InSight - short for Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport - and it's being tested, fueled and encapsulated for launch aboard the powerful United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket. The upcoming liftoff will mark the first time an interplanetary mission has launched from the West Coast.

Stephanie Martin
Posted May 2, 2018 at 6:57 pm

Meteorologists with the U.S. Air Force 30th Space Wing predict a 20 percent chance of favorable weather for liftoff of United Launch Alliance's Atlas V rocket with NASA's Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport (InSight) spacecraft. The overall probability of violation will be 80 percent with the Range Safety constraint of launch visibility being the only area of concern.

The InSight launch is scheduled for Saturday, May 5, at 4:05 a.m. PDT/7:05 a.m. EDT from Space Launch Complex 3 at Vandenberg Air Force Base in Central California.

May 3, 2018Stephen Clark

05/03/2018 17:43 Stephen Clark

The first weather outlook for Saturday's launch of the InSight lander from California to Mars indicates just a 20 percent probability of favorable weather at Vandenberg Air Force Base, the Atlas 5 rocket's launch site on the Pacific coast northwest of Los Angeles.

Forecasters are concerned about the range safety constraint of launch visibility, NASA said in an update on the launch.

Launch is scheduled for a two-hour window opening at 4:05 a.m. PDT (7:05 a.m. EDT; 1105 GMT). If the mission can't take off Saturday, InSight has until June 8 to depart from Earth during this year's Mars launch opportunity. We have posted a list of launch windows for each day here.

Arrived at Vandenberg for InSight briefings. Just ran into Bruce Banerdt, InSight principal investigator, who tells me the launch readiness review went well this morning. He feels the mission is in good hands for launch aboard an Atlas 5 rocket. More nervous about landing on Mars
