Mr. Sirangelo also took time to update the current status of the program, noting the Dream Chaser Engineering Test Article (ETA) is currently on her way back to SNC's base in Colorado, following her test flight last year.

With all the main objectives passed with flying colors, Dream Chaser passed the final NASA Commercial Crew Development Round 2 (CCDev-2) milestone requirement.

Z7Although the landing suffered a failure of the port landing gear, resulting in the vehicle hurtling off the runway, in turn causing a large amount of cosmetic damage, Mr. Sirangelo pointed out the test timeline is actually a few months ahead of schedule, thanks to the multitude of data collected during her debut flight.

The ETA will now be upgraded for one or two more flights – listed as ALT-1 and ALT-2 – beginning later this year. Both will once again be conducted at the Dryden Flight Research Center in California.

"(The ETA) is fully repairable, the primary structures were not damaged," added the SNC boss. "The vehicle is on its way back here for its upgrades. We expect to be conducting air operations with this vehicle again this year."

Dream Chaser ETA Cockpit via L2The upgrade of the ETA will result in her changing call signs from the Block 0 to the Block 0.5.

A final Californian test will involve a crewed high altitude approach and landing in 2015, with the ETA upgraded to the final Block 1 configuration.

This upgrade will overlap with the final construction work on the Orbital Test Vehicle (OTV) version of the Dream Chaser, which will ride atop of an Atlas V for an uncrewed test flight into space.

This vehicle is currently being manufactured at the Michould Assembly Facility (MAF) in New Orleans, per their association with Lockheed Martin.

Crew boarding Dream ChaserKnown as OFT-1 (Orbital Test Flight -1), Mr. Sirangelo noted this should take place in late 2016, with OFT-2 following in early 2017, carrying two crewmembers to the ISS for docking.

"We expect the first orbital launch to occur in 2016 – which will be an unmanned autonomous mission and we're expecting our first human certification mission in 2017," he added.

All of these test flights will lay the foundations for the final fully operational version, the Dream Chaser Space System (DCSS), which will be the baseline design that can foster several variants to account for potential NASA, ESA, Military, and customer specific applications.

Пишут что без обтекателя прийдется пересчитывать всю аэродинамику, а это ужас-ужас.

Sierra Nevada to Announce Dream Chaser Expansion Along Florida Space Coast

Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) of Sparks, Nev., will announce expansion plans for its Dream Chaser Space System program in a news conference Thursday, Jan. 23, at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The announcement will be carried live on NASA Television and the agency's website at 3 p.m. EST.

SNC officials will discuss the company's plans for expansion in the Kennedy area and the current status of the Dream Chaser program. Others will join the briefing to discuss how these developments assist in creating jobs and investment opportunities on the Space Coast that support Kennedy's transformation into a multi-user spaceport.

The news conference will take place at Kennedy's Press Site Television Auditorium. NASA TV will air the news conference prior to the launch of the agency's Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS)-L. Liftoff of TDRS-L on a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket from Space Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida is targeted for 9:05 p.m.

Mark Sirangelo, corporate vice president and head of SNC's Space Systems, will make the announcements and be joined by:
Bob Cabana, Kennedy Space Center director
Michael Gass, United Launch Alliance president and CEO
Frank DiBello, Space Florida president and CEO

Дело не в пересчитывании, а в том, какие боковые нагрузки способен выдержать весь стэк. "Центавр" выдерживает, теоретически по крайней мере. В принципе, на "Ариан" собирались нагишом пускать "Гермес", так что... Просто никому подписать не охота.

Американская частная компания Sierra Nevada планирует осуществить первый испытательный полет своего космического корабля Dream Chaser в ноябре 2016 года и намерена использовать для его запуска, а также посадки космодром на мысе Канаверал (штат Флорида). Об этом сообщает NASA, заключившее с Sierra Nevada соглашение об использовании инфраструктуры своего главного космодрома.

Предполагается, что Dream Chaser будет готовиться к старту в гигантском ангаре на мысе Канаверал. В этом же помещении корпорация Lockheed Martin ведет сборку корабля Orion, который NASA в перспективе планирует использовать для полетов на астероиды и на Марс.

Сотрудничество между ними не ограничится лишь соседством в сборочном цехе. Запуск Dream Chaser будет осуществлен с помощью ракеты-носителя "Атлас-5", которая создана Lockheed Martin и используется на рынке коммерческих космических услуг компанией United Launch Alliance, учрежденной совместно с другим лидером авиакосмической промышленности США - Boeing.

Взлетать "Атлас-5" с Dream Chaser будет с одной из стартовых площадок космодрома, а приземляться кораблю предстоит на 5-километровой посадочной полосе на мысе Канаверал, которая раньше использовалась шаттлами. Новый аппарат по форме напоминает эти корабли NASA, отслужившие свой век и ставшие теперь музейными экспонатами.

По замыслам руководства Sierra Nevada, в состав которого входят, в частности, бывшие астронавты, новый корабль будет использован для полетов на низкую околоземную орбиту, в том числе на Международную космическую станцию. Его экипаж будет состоять из семи человек.

Dream Chaser's KSC vision enables 2016 debut, 24.01.2014  


The highly anticipated confirmation that Dream Chaser will be taking up residency at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) was finally made public this week, albeit with a few welcome surprises. The "baby orbiter" will be processed in the Operations & Checkout (O&C) building, ahead of a "committed" debut launch atop of an Atlas V rocket in late 2016.

Lockheed Martin Space Systems' Jim Crocker, who oversees the company's civil space business, said its involvement in the Dream Chaser program is a continuation of Lockheed Martin's long history at Michoud.

After decades of building the space shuttle's external fuel tanks at the site, the company in 2011 began working on the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle program, a big project that continues at Michoud.

Crocker said bringing the commercial Dream Chaser program to the site helps balance out peaks and valleys in the Orion work.

Predicting that the new vehicle "will be the first of a series" of Dream Chasers that Lockheed will build at the site, he added: "The lights are back on at Michoud Assembly Facility."

During the final years of the U.S. space shuttle program, when more than 3,000 people worked at Michoud, some observers feared that the site might indeed go dark. But worries eased somewhat when NASA announced that Boeing would build an advanced heavy-lift launch vehicle to carry the Orion into deep space.

Today, Boeing is building the Space Launch System at Michoud, under the same roof where Lockheed Martin is fabricating the Orion structure.
