The Past, Powering the Future

All six Pratt Whitney Rocketdyne space shuttle main engines from Endeavour's STS-134 and Atlantis' STS-135 missions sit in test cells inside the Engine Shop at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. For the first time, all 15 shuttle main engines are in the shop at the same time, being prepped for shipment to NASA's Stennis Space Center in Mississippi, where they are being repurposed for use on NASA's next generation heavy lift rocket, the Space Launch System.

У меня возник такой вопрос: было ли видно с борта шаттла хоть раз сгорание топливного бака в атмосфере после его отделения? До какого времени астронавты экипажа шаттла вели съемку падения топливного бака?

Discovery leaves hangar to await April 17 ferryflight

Exactly one year to the day since returning from her final spaceflight and now ready for public display at the Smithsonian, the most-flown space shuttle orbiter was rolled from the Kennedy Space Center hangar and placed into temporary storage at the Vehicle Assembly Building today.

Already outfitted with its aerodynamic tail cone for the Boeing 747 piggyback ride up the eastern seaboard, Discovery was towed from Orbiter Processing Facility bay 1 this morning, briefly stopping while sistership Atlantis vacated the VAB to take the OPF spot, before rolling into high bay 4 of the cavernous assembly building where she will sit for the next month.

With only two shuttle hangars still in use and three orbiters, NASA has been shuffling shuttles during the recent retirement activities. A similar double shuttle sighting like today's was seen last summer.

Endeavour is in the other hangar being prepped for delivery to the California Science Center in Los Angeles this fall; Atlantis will finish the decommissioning process before being driven down the road to KSC's Visitor Complex either late this year or early next.

Discovery flew back to the Florida spaceport last March 9 after the successful STS-133 voyage that delivered a bonus module to the International Space Station to serve as a float-in closet of sorts.

Discovery's rich history featured 39 missions that traveled 148,221,675 miles, spanned 5,830 orbits of Earth and accumulated 365 days in space, deploying the Hubble Space Telescope, carrying out both return-to-flight missions for the space shuttle program and hauling 31,459 pounds of hardware to construct the International Space Station.

The past year was spent safing the spacecraft, removing toxics and potentially harmful materials, plus extracting components NASA wants to save for future use, before the orbiter becomes a prized exhibit at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia.

The modified Boeing 747 will arrive at the Kennedy Space Center on April 13 to pick up the Smithsonian-bound orbiter. Discovery is scheduled to leave the VAB and head for the spaceport's runway ramp on April 14 for hoisting atop the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft.

Departure of Discovery aboard the 747 is targeted for April 17 at 7 a.m. EDT on a three-hour, 40-minute non-stop ferryflight to the Dulles International Airport adjacent to the Smithsonian museum. Ceremonial flyovers of the Cape, the nation's capital and the Dulles areas are being planned, weather permitting.

Once at the Northern Virginia airport, a special dual crane system will remove the 166,000-pound spaceplane from the 747 and lower Discovery onto her landing gear tires. She will be towed into the museum in a public parade with the U.S. Marine Drum and Bugle Corps leading the way on April 19.

The prototype shuttle Enterprise, which has been on display at Udvar-Hazy for a decade, will board the same carrier jet in the subsequent days and leave Dulles for New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport on April 23. She will be put on display at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum later this summer.

Shuttle shuffle between Atlantis and Discovery

The shuttle Discovery, now ready for her ferryflight to the Smithsonian next month, vacated the Orbiter Processing Facility bay 1 this morning to make room for sistership Atlantis to resume decommissioning work. The two ships swapped spots, with Discovery then moving into a storage bay at the Vehicle Assembly Building to await the planned April 17 departure from the Kennedy Space Center atop the modified Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft.

First motion of Discovery occurred at 8:42 a.m. EST and the vehicle was secure in the VAB's high bay 4 at 10:31 a.m. EST.

Atlantis began rolling out of the VAB at 8:45 a.m. EST and arrived in the OPF at 11:43 a.m. EST.

Шаттл Atlantis прибыл в музей на мысе Канаверал

Американский челнок завершил свою карьеру в минувшем году. Шаттл состоял на службе НАСА 26 лет. Совершил 33 вылета и провёл в космосе в общей сложности 306 дней. 

Накануне утром Atlantis вывезли из сборочного ангара в центре им. Кеннеди и установили на специальной многоколёсной платформе. Дорога до музея не длинная, примерно 16 км, однако конструкция двигалась к музею весь день. 

Американская администрация в условиях ограниченного финансирования космической программы решила отказаться от программы полётов «челноков», сосредоточившись на разработке космических кораблей, способных выходить на более высокую орбиту – в частности, долететь до астероидов и Марса. Для доставки американских астронавтов на Международную космическую станцию НАСА пока пользуется услугами российских «Союзов». 

Ожидается, что уже в ближайшем будущем эту функцию возьмут на себя корабли, построенные частными американскими аэрокосмическими компаниями. Пока же каждое место обходится правительству США в 60 млн долларов. 

Два других американских челнока – Discovery и Endeavour, также завершившие свою космическую одиссею в минувшем году, уже были переданы в музеи. Первый теперь стоит в филиале Национального музея авиации и космонавтики в пригороде Вашингтона, второй – в Калифорнийском научном центре в Лос-Анджелесе. Шаттл Enterprise, никогда не поднимавшийся в космос и служивший НАСА в качестве испытательного образца, «приземлился» на палубе нью-йоркского музея-авианосца Intrepid.

Вадим, будь последователен. Если не нужна орбитальная станция, то не нужны, как минимум, и "космические крылья". Да и корабли новые вообще тоже не нужны.
