USV (Unmanned Space Vehicle): The first Italian space ship leaves the hangar
Thursday 27th April 2006
ЦитироватьThe USV (Unmanned Space Vehicle) – the first Italian space ship – is presented to the press, and to the international and national industrial and scientific community. Today, in fact, the spaceship leaves the hangar, where it has been assembled, to reach the base that will launch it for its maiden flight.

This first prototype was designed by CIRA. It is 9.2m long and about 3.7m wide and has a weight of 1250 kg; It took four years of work to build it from 2002 to 2006.

This spacecraft is a true flying laboratory. It will be launched for its maiden flight from the Italian Space Agency launch base in Trapani Milo, in Sicily, in the time frame between mid June and the end of August 2006, waiting for adequate weather conditions: it will be released from a stratospheric balloon at an altitude of 25km. It will accelerate by gravity up to a maximum of Mach 2.5 and will then be slowed down by a system of parachutes to safely splash down and to be retrieved.

In the meantime, in addition to several major technological problems, the USV program is studying a second type of vehicle (flying laboratory) that will be designed and implemented on the basis of the first one and which will feature an innovative system to re-enter from the earth orbit.

Re-entry technologies, hypersonic flight and re-usability are the main characteristics of the USV, in line with the standards of the new aerospaceplane that are required to meet increasingly complex needs with respect to the past. The space flights will be devoted to research purposes but also to the exploration of the Universe and possibly to space tourism. In a few years' time, the launch of a spaceship will no longer be a sporadic event, but will become a routine activity. Unlike current spacecraft, such as the Space Shuttle, the operational capabilities of the arospaceplanes will be more similar to the modern civil aircraft and will take off and land like aeroplanes on any spaceport.

Hence the need to have re-usable vehicles (as envisaged in the USV program) in order to reduce costs and, at the same time, to make space more easily and rapidly accessible.; but also high standard so as to minimize risks, especially the ones related to the most sensitive flight operation, i.e. re-entry (it will suffice to think of the Shuttle tragedy which took place in 2002).

"USV will enable CIRA," as state by GENNARO RUSSO, head of the program, "to become the only site in Europe and probably around the world, where the Research Triangle, as we like to call it, will be completed: in view of capitilising on the synergy between the supercomputer theoretical-numerical capabilities, the experimental potential of facilities such as the Scirocco Plasma Gallery and the USV flying laboratories. For complex operations such as hypersonic flights and re-enrty into the atmosphere, the Research Triangle is the most-advanced space technological development, design and experimentation instrument."

The USV allows Italy not only to play a leading role in Europe in the sector of re-usable launchers, but also to be the only Country, other than the US, to have a research program for spaceplanes, with resources already available. The overall budget to develop the whole USV Program is €'179 million, of which €'86.7 million is already allocated to PRORA (PROgramma nazionale di Ricerca Aerospaziale) (National Aerospace Research Program) and €'80 million to PASN (Piano Aero Spaziale Nazionale) (National AeroSpace Plan).

"With the USV Program, Italy is acquiring a leading position with respect to the other European countries, and is poised to play a prominent role in a future development program – stated Sergio Vetrella, President of CIRA – In addition, the activities in the framework of the USV Program are conducted together with national organisations and companies, thus proving major benefits to the Italian aerospace research and industry."

Italian engineers are thrilled with the successful first flight of their unmanned space vehicle (USV) programme - despite the test vehicle ending up in three pieces, one of which is now lost on the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea.
