Under terms of the agreement, Thales Alenia Space will supply nine additional Pressurized Cargo Modules (PCM) to Orbital ATK for upcoming cargo resupply missions to the International Space Station (ISS). The cargo module is designed to transport crew supplies and science experiments on Orbital ATK's Cygnus spacecraft under NASA's Commercial Resupply Services contract. Cygnus recently delivered 7,900 pounds of cargo and science experiments to astronauts aboard the station and successfully completed its fifth mission under the contract. Orbital ATK is scheduled to complete 10 CRS-1 missions to the International Space Station before transitioning to launch cargo logistics missions under the CRS-2 contract in 2019.
....
"Thales Alenia Space has been one of our most reliable and strategic partners in the area of Human Spaceflight," said David Thompson, President and Chief Executive Officer of Orbital ATK. "The pressurized cargo modules developed by Thales Alenia have worked flawlessly to establish Cygnus as a flagship product for cargo resupply missions and as a research platform for science experiments that enable deep space exploration. The enhanced pressure cargo module flown on our last two missions also enabled Cygnus to carry over 50 percent more cargo to NASA, further demonstrating the versatility and flexibility that Cygnus offers to our customers."

The Cygnus spacecraft consists of two basic components: the Service Module (SM) built by Orbital ATK and the Pressurized Cargo Module (PCM) developed by Thales Alenia Space. Building on 40 years of experience in space infrastructures and transportation systems, the Cygnus PCM developed by Thales Alenia Space calls on the company's skills and expertise developed through previous programs for the International Space Station, such as the MPLM (Multipurpose Logistics Module), built by the company on behalf of the Italian space agency for NASA, and the ATV (Automated Transfer Vehicle) Cargo Carrier, built by Thales Alenia Space for the European Space Agency.

The new configuration incorporates a number of upgrades as compared to the standard PCM utilized prior to this mission. These include a lighter and more efficient solution for storing and constraining the cargo inside the module, allowing for an increase in the mass and volume of cargo amount able to be transported to the orbiting laboratory. In addition, the new design confirmed the ability to accommodate cargo bags with both irregular shape and stiffness. The improved PCM also accommodates an increased number of middeck lockers as compared to the existing module design which enhances the capability to transport science experiments.....

Сygnus Program Wins Prestigious 2016 AIAA Space Systems Award

The Cygnus program has been sel ected to receive the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Space Systems Award for 2016. The cargo delivery spacecraft was honored for outstanding achievements in architecture, analysis, design and implementation of space systems.
Orbital ATK and the Cygnus team will be presented with this prestigious award at the mid-September AIAA Space and Astronautics Forum in recognition of the demonstrated success of the program. Orbital ATK launched the first Cygnus spacecraft on September 18, 2013 to perform resupply missions to the International Space Station under NASA's Commercial Resupply Services contract. Since then, Cygnus has transported nearly 22,000 pounds of vital cargo and science experiments to astronauts after five missions to the orbiting laboratory.
"The hardworking and dedicated team behind the Cygnus program is what allows Orbital ATK to produce reliable, innovative, and affordable products for our customers," said Frank Culbertson, President of Orbital ATK's Space Systems Group. "Thanks to their efforts, Cygnus has demonstrated success in cargo deliveries to the ISS and as the host to important scientific research. We look forward to our continuing role in furthering human exploration of the solar system."
"Our Cygnus spacecraft is an excellent example of Orbital ATK's reliable, innovative and highly performing products making it a premier vehicle for NASA cargo resupply missions," said Vice President and General Manager of the Advanced Programs Division Frank DeMauro. "Cygnus has always been a team effort, and this award goes to the entire team for their innovation, hard work and dedication in making the Cygnus program a success."

Orbital ATK will fly five more missions under CRS-1 before transitioning to the upcoming CRS-2 contract. The spacecraft has evolved over the years for its customers with demonstrated flexibility and versatility from launch options to increased cargo capability. Cygnus has launched aboard Orbital ATK's Antares medium-class space launch vehicle, as well as United Launch Alliance's Atlas V vehicle. On its most recent mission, OA-6, the spacecraft carried a company record of 7,900 pounds of cargo and science experiments to the International Space Station. Cygnus also flew for the first time on that mission as an in-orbit research platform for scientific experiments that enable deep space exploration.
The Cygnus spacecraft is in impressive company with previous winners of the AIAA Space Systems Award. Past winners include the Herschel and Planck Project Team fr om the European Space Research and Technology Centre, Mr. Michael D. Trela of Skybox Imaging inc., and Surrey Satellite Technologies Ltd's Disaster Monitoring Constellation.

Steinmeyer: reusability is not always cheaper. On CRS-2, we have lowest $/kg for cargo, even though Cygnus not reused. #AIAASpace

Если брать программу NextSTEP
 http://www.nasa.gov/feature/nextstep-partnerships-develop-ground-prototypes
 http://www.nasa.gov/press-release/nasa-selects-six-companies-to-develop-prototypes-concepts-for-deep-space-habitats
