ЦитироватьASTROSAT all set to be launched next year: Madhavan Nair
PTI Share
 THE HINDU

India's first science satellite ASTROSAT is all set to be launched next year, former chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation Dr. Madhavan Nair said here on Saturday.

One more satellite 'Aditya' to study Sun's coronal mass ejection (CME) will be launched in two years while the science mission to planet Mars by 2013, Nair said addressing a galaxy of scientists from India and abroad and the student community at the Grand Finale function of Bhabha Centenary celebrations which concluded on Saturday.

The multi-wavelength astronomy mission ASTROSAT on an Indian remote sensing satellite-class satellite in a 650-km, near-equatorial orbit will be launched next year, he said adding it will be launched by the Indian launch vehicle PSLV from the Sriharikota launch pad. The expected operating life time of the satellite will be five years.

`Adiyta' will be launched in next two years to study the properties of CMEs, which are gigantic bubbles of electrified gas that billow away from the Sun.

CME can carry as much as 10 billion tons of solar material and trigger spectacular geomagnetic storms if they hit Earth's magnetosphere.

CMEs, which usually travel at speeds between 500 and 1500 km per second, take 2 or 3 days to cross the 150 million km divide separating the Sun and Earth.

About India's Mars mission, Nair said various concepts about going to Mars and nearby objects are being looked into and it is at a conceptual stage right now.

"We have the capability and will be using geosynchronous satellite launch vehicle (GSLV) for launching the Mars mission," he said.

"The ISRO has begun the preparations for sending a spacecraft to Mars and discussions are thrown out to find what are the things we have explore in Martian atmosphere," he said.

Earlier this year Union Government sanctioned seed money of Rs. 10 crore for Mars project to carry out various studies on experiments to be conducted, route of the mission and other related details necessary to scale the new frontier.

About Chandraan II mission, he said "it is going to be one our flagship mission and is expected to be launched in 2013.Yesterday ISRO had conducted a review of the instrumentation required for the mission," he said.

"The design for Chandrayaan-II is ready which includes an orbiter, lander and rover which will be used to study the surface of the moon in detail including the moon magma," Mr. Nair said.

He also explained that last year, ISRO had sent to space a capsule which was recovered after keeping in orbit for 22 days. The Space Recovery Experiment (SRE) was seen as a technology demonstrator for future manned missions.

He also impressed upon the student community from various colleges that ISRO is also actively working on atmospheric science and developing a parallel local weather forecasting system which can predict weather in a specified locality before 72 hours.

ISRO is having a joint venture with France, the Megha-Tropiques Mission (MTM), to study the water cycle in the tropical atmosphere in the context of climate change, he added. It is a collaborative effort with the French Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales, he said.

ЦитироватьISRO bags launch orders for Italian, Algerian satellites news

01 September 2008

Bangalore: Antrix Corp Ltd, the marketing arm of the Indian Space research Organisation (ISRO),  has bagged launch orders from Algeria and Italy for earth observation satellites that will be put into orbit next year by the agency's workhorse Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).

The contract from the Algerian space agency is for the launch of its 200kg Alsat-2A, remote sensing satellite. For Antrix, this is the first ever contract from an African nation. Algeria retains the option to contract for the launch of a second satellite.

The Italian space agency Agenzia Spaziale Italiana, has contracted for the launch of its IMSAT satellite, which, incidentally will become the second satellite from this European country to be boosted into space by ISRO.
Earlier, in April 2007, ISRO launched the Agile, a 352kg scientific satellite for the same agency.

No financial details have been disclosed for these deals.

Along with the Algerian and Italian payloads, a 100kg satellite from Singapore's  Nanyang Technological University as well as the Cubesat, a three-satellite package from the Netherlands, would also piggyback on heavier Indian satellites, said KR Sridhara Murthi, managing director of Antrix.

Murthi also said his organisation was in talks with South African and Nigerian space agencies for contracting similar missions.  He also mentioned that Antrix was looking at ''bigger opportunities'' such as the launch of remote sensing satellites, with heavier payloads of around 800kg.

Thanks to the advantages that the PSLV offers, ISRO can carry satellites of up to 1,700kg into low-earth orbit at two-thirds the cost charged by firms such as International Launch Services, owned by Space Transport Inc. and two Russian organizations, Khrunichev State Research and Production Space Center and RSC Energia.

Low-earth orbit is the region above earth between 200km and 2,000km, ideal to place earth observation or remote sensing satellites.

ISRO has only recently entered the global satellite manufacturing and launch industry, which is expected to grow to $145 billion (Rs6.3 trillion) over 10 years to 2016, from $116 billion in the 10 years to 2006, according to Paris-based research firm Euroconsult

The launch of GSLV D3 is scheduled on Jan-20 as of NOW*

*(There's a debate going on regarding the cryogenic engine. In case of any issues, the launch may be postponed by months and PSLV launches preponed...I am not privy to the discussion but looks like it is regarding  the material used in building cryo stage...on whether it can withstand the heat and vibration)

Please do note that in case GSLV gets stranded, It will occupy SLP making ISRO use only FLP unless ISRO decides to move the vehicle out.
There are problems with both the GSLV booster and the GSAT-4 spacecraft. The cryogenic engines are not developing enough thrust and there are problems with the electronics of 2 payloads. They are opening the spacecraft up so the final vibration will not happen until the end of Jan which puts the launch in late Feb, at the earliest. They may also have to remove one payload to get the weight down.
This is means that Cryo is not up to the mark. Moreover reduction of pay load means more weight cant be put up which is not a good sign at all. First of all we should concentrate on perfect working of Cryo even if we have to compromise on marginal weight.

ЦитироватьGSLV, PSLV flights put off

The launch of the Geo-synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-D3), scheduled for December 2009 from Sriharikota, has been postponed to March.

The GSLV-D3 will be powered by an indigenous cryogenic stage built for the first time by the Indian Space Research Organisation. It will put in orbit a communication satellite, GSAT-4, which is not ready either.

The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), planned to be launched prior to the GSLV-D3 flight, has also been postponed. It will now take off in March to put in orbit Cartosat-2B; Alsat, a small satellite from Algeria; two nano-satellites from the University of Toronto, and another nano-satellite, Studsat (Students' satellite), built by several Indian universities. The Cartosat-2B, to be built by the ISRO Satellite Centre in Bangalore, is also not ready.

Decision in January

An authoritative ISRO official said: "We are going through the process of the review of the indigenous cryogenic stage. We had a review on December 20. Certain things have to be checked. The GSLV-D3 launch will be a milestone. We have to make sure everything is all right. We will decide the launch schedule in January."

When Oceansat-2 was successfully launched on September 23, 2009, ISRO officials claimed that the GSLV-D3would lift off in December and the PSLV flight would take place ahead of it. The GSLV's first stage had reached Sriharikota, they said then. But the work on building the GSLV-D3 stages in the second launch pad at Sriharikota was now "suspended," ISRO engineers said. It is a three-stage vehicle, and the first stage was built in the launch pad. "There are several small issues relating to the indigenous cryogenic stage. It takes time to understand cryogenic engines. We want to ensure that everything is reliable," they said.

The indigenous cryogenic stage, including its engine, has been built by the ISRO's Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre at Mahendragiri near Nagercoil.

Difficult task

Another engineer said it was difficult to perfect a cryogenic stage, and "so it is a crucial launch and a cautious step forward for the ISRO." Cryogenic engines use liquid hydrogen at minus 265 degrees Celsius as fuel and liquid oxygen at minus 240 degrees Celsius as oxidiser. If they do not mix properly, they will explode. A cryogenic stage includes the motor, propellant tanks, control devices, electronic instruments, plumbing and motor casing.

From 2001 to 2007, there have been five GSLV flights and these rockets used Russian cryogenic engines. This is the sixth GSLV flight, and it will use an indigenous cryogenic stage.

ЦитироватьReview of Indian cryogenic engine holds up rocket launch
January 4th, 2010 - 5:56 pm ICT by IANS

Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 4 (IANS) The test flight of a geo-synchronous satellite launch vehicle (GSLV-D3) powered by an Indian cryogenic engine with super-cooled fuel has been put on hold as it is undergoing final evaluation, a top space official said Monday.

"We are undertaking a thorough review of the indigenously built cryogenic engine before finalising the launch date of GSLV-D3," Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman K. Radhakrishnan told IANS here.

Clarifying that there was no delay as such in the rocket's launch from the Sriharikota spaceport, about 80 km northeast of Chennai, Radhakrishnan said the launch schedule would be decided at a review meeting later this month in Bangalore.

"We will decide the launch schedule at a review meeting in the next two weeks. As we want to make sure the cryogenic engine performs successfully after the launch, a final check-up is underway," Radhakrishnan said on the margins of a space summit at the 97th Indian Science Congress (ISC2010) that began here Sunday.

The successful test-firing of an indigenous cryogenic engine will take India into the elite space club of the US, Russia, China, France and Japan that have the capability to make such engines.

A cryogenic engine uses liquid hydrogen as fuel at minus 265 degrees Celsius and liquid oxygen at minus 240 degrees Celsius as oxidiser in the upper stage of a rocket like the GSLV to deploy satellites in geo-synchronous orbit.

If the fuel mix is not in the exact proportion, the rocket can explode in the geo-synchronous orbit.

"We are planning to first launch Cartosat-2B in March using the PSLV (polar satellite launch vehicle) and follow it up with the launch of GSLV-D3 later this year," Radhakrishnan noted.

The GSLV-D3 is set to carry GSAT-4 communication satellite into the geo-stationary orbit, around 36,000 km above the earth.

The state-run Indian space agency tested the cryogenic engine for the full flight duration of 720 seconds (12 minutes) at its liquid propulsion systems centre in December 2007 at Mahendragiri in southern Tamil Nadu.

"The ground test validated the design and performance of the cryogenic engine for use in the GSLV test flight," a space official said.

ISRO took up the development of cryogenic stage in 1996 to achieve self-reliance in cryogenic propulsion technology.

ISRO so far used Russian-made cryogenic engines for the launch of GSLVs.

Besides Cartosat-2B, the polar rocket will carry on board Alsat, a small Algerian satellite, two Canadian nano-satellites and Studsat, another nano-satellite built by students of Indian universities.

As a remote-sensing earth observation satellite in a sun-synchronous polar orbit, the 680-kg Cartosat-2B will carry a sophisticated panchromatic camera to take images for cartographic applications such as mapping, land information and geographical information system.

Cartosat-2A was launched in April 2008.

2010-01-04 20:42:38 | Russian.News.Cn

Posted On: 06-Jan-2010 08:38:39 By: Ashok B Sharma

Thiruvananthapuram: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has finally planned to launch its Geo-synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle – GSLV D3 and its Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV – 16)  by March 2010. The launch of GSLV- D3 was earlier scheduled for December 2009 and later postponed for lauch in January 2009. The launch of PSLV – 16 was planned prior to that of GSLV- D3.
The director of Satish Dhawan Space Centre-SHAR, MC Dathan said : "The launch of GSLV – D3 was delayed as we are reviewing the indigenous cryogenic stage. The GSLV-D3 will be powered by an indigenous cryogenic stage built for the first time by the Indian Space Research Organisation. It will put in orbit a communication satellite, GSAT-4."

He said that the PSLV – 16 will also be launched in March to put in orbit Cartosat-2B; Alsat, a small satellite from Algeria; two nano-satellites from the University of Toronto, and another nano-satellite, Studsat (Students' satellite), built by several Indian universities.

Dathan, who is participating in the 97th Indian Science Congress at Thiruvananthapuram said : "In January, this year we will do the ground testing of the biggest solid booster for GSLV Maitri which is scheduled to be launched in 2011. ISRO also has a programme to use reusable launch vessel to carry hygrogen to produce water in combination of oxygen extracted from the atmosphere. As we would not carry water this would help us to reduce the weight of vessel at the take off stage." He said that ISRO was exploring the possibility of using kerosene as a fuel option.

January 5th, 2010 - 6:08 pm ICT by IANS  -

Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 5 (IANS) India is expected to launch the INSAT 3D satellite later this year to boost its weather forecasting accuracy, Shailesh Naik, Secretary in the Ministry of Earth Sciences, said here Tuesday.
"The country will achieve more accuracy level within a few years in short-term and long-term weather forecasts," Naik said while delivering a lecture on 'Weather, Climate and Environment' at the ongoing 97th Indian Science Congress.

He said the country has now 77 percent accuracy level in short-term weather forecast, which "will improve further with the launching of INSAT 3D this year and the OCEANSAT II in 20123.

INSAT-3D is a pure meteorological satellite without additional communication payload as in the other INSAT satellites. It features a 19-channel sounder, a 6-channel imager and two other meteorology related payloads.

Naik said by the end of 2010, 650 districts will be covered under weather forecast as against 470 districts at present.

The secretary also hinted that a training school would be set up to train at least 30-40 people in climate studies as this area was lacking experts. Massive investment was needed in areas like climate studies to provide better climate prediction for decision makers.

Thiruvananthapuram, India (SPX) Jan 11, 2010
The third launch pad planned at ISRO's Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, is going to be something special.

While it will meet the space agency's needs for the 2015 Human Space Flight Mission, the launch pad is also being designed to accommodate the proposed Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV), India's dream space shuttle which is on the designing board, ISRO officials said.

"The preliminary design for the third launch pad is complete. It will be able to take care of all future programmes of the ISRO, including the Human Space Flight Mission and the Reusable Launch Vehicle," officials said.

ISRO has also started designing a landing strip for the Reusable Launch Vehicle at the Sriharikota Range.

The third pad is coming up one kilometre south of the spaceport's second pad, which was used to lift off the PSLV-XL rocket bearing the Chandrayaan-I mission in 2008. It is expected to be completed by 2015, coinciding with the Human Space Flight Mission for which the GSLV rocket is to be used.

"Since human beings are to be sent to space, the new pad is specially designed.

It will have facilities such as a Crew Escape Module which could come handy in an emergency during the launch," sources said.

A Reusable Launch Vehicle is expected to save the space agency massively in mission costs.

Today, each kilogram of the payload costs around $ 12,000 to be placed in space.

Three launch pads will also enhance ISRO's capability for multiple launches with the space agency's annual number of launches on the rise.
