Chennai: The successful launch of India's heavier rocket - the geosynchronous satellite launch vehicle-D5 (GSLV-D5) - Sunday not only means the indigenous cryogenic engine is performing well but also would pave way for sizeable savings, the space agency's chief said Saturday.

"When GSLV-D5 succeeds in its mission Sunday, it means the Indian cryogenic stage/engine is performing well. It is a culmination of major indigenous technology development," Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman K.Radhakrishnan.

In addition, the mission's success would not only pave way for ISRO to save launch costs paid to foreign space agencies but also to launch more communication satellites augmenting the transponder capacity to earn more revenue, he added.

Radhakrishnan said the country pays around $85-90 million or around Rs.500 crore as launch fee for sending up a 3.5 tonne communication satellites whereas the GSLV rocket costs around Rs.220 crore and the GSAT-14 that would go up Sunday evening costs around Rs.145 crore.

The ISRO can send smaller communication satellites - weighing around two tonnes - till such time it gets ready an advanced GSLV variant that can lug satellites weighing around four tonnes.

While that is for the future, Radhakrishnan said ISRO has lined up several satellite launches for the current GSLV rocket version.

"We will be launching satellites GSAT-6, 7A, 9 using GSLV. We will also be using this rocket for our second Chandrayaan mission and for the launch of GISAT," he said.

According to him, another communication satellite GSAT-15 will be launched using the Ariane rocket.

Other than the flight testing of cryogenic engine, 2014 will be an important year for ISRO.

Radhakrishnan noted that in September, the Mars Orbiter will be injected into the Mars orbit while the test flight of GSLV-Mark III version will also include a crew module for characterisation of re-entry from the space.

"The GSLV-Mark III experimental mission will be in April this year. The rocket will have a passive cryogenic stage/engine. The main purpose of the mission is to study the aerodynamics and stability of the rocket," he said.

He said the cryogenic engine for the next GSLV version will take around three years for being flight ready.

According to him, the next fiscal (April 2014-March 2015) would see ISRO launching three IRNSS (Indian Regional Navigational Satellite System) satellites taking the total to four and be ready for usage.

He said ISRO will also launch French satellite SPOT-7 along with four small satellites using its other rocket Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).

Radhakrishnan said ISRO plans to induct around 96 transponders (receivers and transmitters of signals),next fiscal. Currently it has 195 transponders.

Queried about the Mars Orbiter that was launched last year, he said the satellite health is good and it is around 8.5 million kilometer from earth.

"The next orbit maneuver (course correction) will be in April," he said.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) will launch three satellites belonging to the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) constellation this year.

Delivering the Jawaharlal Nehru Birth Centenary Memorial Lecture on 'Recent Flights in Indian Space Programme', scientific secretary of Isro V Koteshwara Rao on Thursday said three IRNSS satellites-IRNSS-1B,IRNSS-1C and IRNSS-1D will be launched this year.

IRNSS is an independent regional navigation satellite system designed to provide position information in the Indian region and 1,500 km around the Indian mainland.

IRNSS would provide two types of services, namely, Standard Positioning Services (SPS) – provided to all users – and Restricted Services (RS) that is provided only to authorised users.  

It is a constellation of seven satellites and Isro has already launched IRNSS-1A, first of the seven satellites constituting the space segment of the IRNSS last year. The entire IRNSS constellation of seven satellites is planned to be completed by 2015-16.

He added that apart from the three satellites belonging to the IRNSS series, Isro has a target to launch five more satellites, which includes a commercial launch- SPOT-7 satellite and an GSLV Mk III experimental flight.

SPOT-7 is an advanced French Remote Sensing Satellite, which will be launched during first quarter of 2014.

BANGALORE: Over three months after India successfully launched a probe to Mars, a senior department of space official gave details to why the original launch date (October 28, 2013) was pushed to November 5.

"Two of the four diesel engines of a ship meant to track the movement of the satellite failed and this delayed its arrival at Fiji Island in the South Pacific. We had to put off the launch by a week. The ship finally arrived a day before the launch," V Koteswara Rao, scientific secretary, department of space, said on Thursday.

As the satellite would pass over the South Pacific Ocean which is not covered by any ground station, Indian Space Research Organization hired Shipping Corporation of India ships Yamuna and Nalanda to track the satellite.

"We should appreciate SCI technicians who reached the ship and solved the problem in time," Rao said while delivering the Jawaharlal Nehru Birth Centenary Lecture at the Central Power Research Institute here.

Pointing out the advantages of the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) rocket, he said Isro has in its pipeline a series of launches, mostly on the trusted Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) this year (see box).

Among the major launches are four satellites of the Indian Regional Navigational Satellite System (IRNSS), forming a constellation of satellites Isro wants to create for a regional navigational system on the lines of GPS. It'll also launch a foreign satellite SPOT-7 as part of its collaboration with France.

Antrix signs agreements for launching satellites from UK and Singapore on-board ISRO's workhorse Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV)


On 29th January 2014, Antrix Corporation Limited (Antrix), the commercial arm of Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), signed Launch Services Agreement with DMC International Imaging (DMCii), the wholly-owned subsidiary of Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL), United Kingdom (UK), for launch of three DMC-3 Earth Observation Satellites being built by SSTL, on-board ISRO's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).

On 5th February 2014, Antrix signed another Launch Services Agreement with ST Electronics (Satcom & Sensor Systems) Pte Ltd, Singapore, for launch of TeLEOS-1 Earth Observation Satellite, on-board PSLV.

These launches are planned during end 2014 to end 2015.

A Singaporean earth observation satellite will be launched with an Indian Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) next year, a senior official said on Sunday. The TeLEOS-1 would be Singapore's first commercial project on Indian Space Research organisation's PSLV, making Near Equatorial Orbit, taking images for shipping and maritime security, Mah How Teck, Vice President for Market Development at Singapore Technologies Electronics Ltd told PTI.

ST Electronics has signed an agreement with India's Antrix Corporation Ltd for the satellite to ride on PSLV, which would be launched into space at 550-km above the Earth at a low inclination in the fourth quarter of 2015. The 400-kg satellite is equipped with an electro-optical camera capable of taking images at ground resolution of one metre, Mah said. "It is suitable for applications such as disaster and environment monitoring, maritime safety, urban planning and homeland security," he said, after hosting a pre-Singapore Airshow press conference.

The unique Near Equatorial Orbit allows frequent revisits to areas of interest in equatorial regions at approximately 96-minute intervals, delivering high data availability and responsiveness, Mah said. Singapore launched its first experimental satellite XSAT in April 2011 with the help of ISRO. This is their second project.

The TeLEOS-1 is a commercial project by ST Electronics and its compatriot partners Nanyang Technological University and Defence Science Organisation Laboratories, following up with the XSAT, their first research project. Mah said TeLEOS-1 would be ready for launch in the fourth quarter of next year, having completed more than 60 per cent of the project.

Meanwhile, preparations were underway for Singapore Airshow, which held pre-opening full dress rehearsal on Sunday. Staring Monday, more than 80 civilian and defence aircraft and 60 out of the top 100 aviation companies are taking part in the week-long exhibition and conferences.

Antrix Corporation Limited, the commercial arm of the Indian Space Research Organization (Isro), has signed agreements for launching satellites from UK and Singapore on-board Isro's work-horse Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).

Isro said that the Corporation signed Launch Services Agreement with DMC International Imaging (DMCii), the wholly-owned subsidiary of Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL), United Kingdom (UK), for launch of three DMC-3 Earth Observation Satellites being built by SSTL, on-board Isro's PSLV. Antrix also signed another Launch Services Agreement with ST Electronics (Satcom & Sensor Systems) Pte Ltd, Singapore, for launch of TeLEOS-1 Earth Observation Satellite, on-board PSLV. These launches are planned between 2014-end and 2015-end, said Isro.

Antrix said that it is expecting around 15 per cent growth in turnover as more countries are using Isro's infrastructure and expertise to launch satellites for their use.

V S Hegde, chairman and managing director, Antrix Corporation had said in 2012-13 that the Corporation clocked a revenue of Rs 1,300 crore and expects about 15 per cent growth in 2014-15. He said contracts were signed to launch large satellites for Germany, three for UK. Antrix is engaged in providing Space products and services to international customers worldwide. By using the launch services of Isro's workhorse launch vehicle, PSLV, 31 satellites belonging to 17 countries have been launched on commercial terms during the last 10 years.

An important achievement of the last decade is realising two high power communication satellites, viz. W2M and HYLAS for European customers – contracts bagged by Antrix against tough competition.

Additionally, the data from Indian Remote sensing satellites are commercially disseminated to users globally. Antrix leases transponders of the INSAT system for commercial purpose. Antrix Corporation is a wholly owned Government of India Company under the administrative control of the Department of Space, Government of India.

Incorporated as a private limited company in September 1992, it has been a Marketing arm of Isro for promotion and commercial exploitation of space products, technical consultancy services and transfer of technologies developed by ISRO.

Chennai: India's latest navigational satellite IRNSS 1-B would be launched onboard PSLV C-24 rocket from the spaceport at Sriharikota on March 31.

There would be a two-and-a-half day countdown which would be preceded by a launch rehearsal on March 26, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) sources said today.

"The launch of IRNSS 1-B from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota is scheduled at 5.20 pm on March 31," they told PTI.

This is the second of the seven satellites planned for Indian Regional Navigational Satellite System (IRNSS), whose applications include terrestrial and marine navigation, disaster management, vehicle tracking and fleet management.

ISRO had launched IRNSS 1-A, the first in the series, on July 1 last year onboard its workhorse Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) C-22.

IRNSS is similar to US' Global Positioning System (GPS), Russia's Glonass and Europe's Galileo. China and Japan too have similar systems named Beidou and Japanese Quasi Zenith Satellite System respectively, they said.

VELLORE: A desi Global Positioning System (GPS) service is on the anvil and will be available from the middle of next year, according to a top scientist of the Indian space agency.

"We will be able to offer our own indigenous GPS service with the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS), being developed by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)," said Dr K Sivan, Director of ISRO's Thiruvananthapuram-based Liquid Propulsion Systems Center. He disclosed this to the media on the sidelines of the 23rs convocation of the Thanthai Periyar Government institute of Technology here on Saturday.

At present, India is making use of satellite services of other countries for the navigation applications using GPS. The IRNSS, developed by ISRO, would soon offer position information to users in India with accuracy for various applications such as mobile phones, terrestrial, aerial and marine navigation, disaster management etc . Out of the seven satellites planned, two have been already launched and the third one would be launched soon. By the middle of next year, the IRNSS would be able to provide GPS services to Indian users, Sivan said.

Stating that the launch of GSLV Mark III next month would provide a greater thrust to the country's deep-space programme, he said "We are pragmatically pushing forward the development of semi-cryogenic technology." Demonstration of larger launch vehicles that could carry around 4 ton satellites is being planned in the next couple of months. 'Human in Space' programme was also gaining momentum and GSLV Mark III would accommodate a special module on experimental basis.

He said, the next focus after the Mars mission was towards exploration of the solar system and deep space astronomy. As new applications are being developed, the size of satellites had to be increased and ISRO was planning to develop 10 tons satellites soon.

 While Isro's workhorse launching vehicle PSLV has carved a niche by scoring 26 wins out of the total 27 missions till date, the existing GSLV and the upcoming Mark-III would give it the strategic edge for introducing higher capacity communication satellites into space.
 
 "The first experimental flight of GSLV Mark-III with passive cryogenic stage and that too in a crew module would be a precursor to the possible human space flight," said Radhakrishnan during his chief guest address here today at the convocation of BITS Hyderabad 2014 batch.
 
 He said Mark III launching vehicle was capable of placing "4-4.5 tonne capacity communication satellite in the geostationary orbit".
 
 The existing PSLV is compatible for launching 1.8 tonne communication satellites and it is 2.2 tonne for the GSLV.
