Так что Перминов рискует остаться без приятной компании

Gration's Chances Fade Away

Looks like the effort to nominate Major General Jonathan Scott Gration to be the next Administrator of NASA has faded. Multiple sources report that objections by Sen. Nelson, Sen. Mikulski, and others about Gration's experience with NASA have caused this trial balloon to drift away. The personal connection with President Obama just was not enough, so it would seem. The ball is now back in the Obama team's court. Note: contrary to much speculation, the transition team in place at NASA Headquarters (now moving into more permanent positions at the agency) was not directly involved in the selection or vetting of possible nominees such as Gration. They did have some input but that was early in the process. As such, it would be prudent to look toward the White House for hints as to what will happen next. Stay tuned.

Obama Administration Names Interim NASA Leadership

The Obama Administration has announced several interim leadership changes for NASA, which are effective immediately.

Christopher Scolese, NASA's associate administrator, will serve as acting administrator until a successor to Michael Griffin has been nominated by the President and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

Ronald Spoehel, NASA's chief financial officer and a political appointee from the previous Administration, has been asked to continue in his present position.

Several other posts usually held by political appointees will have acting leaders until the positions are filled by the Administration.

Mary D. Kerwin, deputy assistant administrator for the Office of Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs, will serve as acting chief of the Office of Strategic Communications and the acting assistant administrator for the Office of Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs.

Robert Jacobs, deputy assistant administrator for the Office of Public Affairs, will serve as the office's acting assistant administrator.

Kristen Erickson, deputy director of the Communications Planning Division of the Office of Strategic Communications, will serve as the acting division director.

 I keep hearing the name Lester Lyles mentioned as a possible choice for NASA Administrator. He was a senior Obama campaign advisor, served on the President's Commission on U.S. Space Policy, has extensive space experience from his days in the USAF, is participating in the ongoing NAS study "Rationale and Goals of the U.S. Civil Space Program", and is also a member of the NASA Advisory Council. Unlike Scott Gration, Lyles has obvious space creds. I have always been impressed by him.

This of course could mean absolutely nothing - just idle chatter on a Friday - and what fun is a Friday without some unsubstantiated rumors and gossip, eh?

 According to administration insiders, the list of candidates to be Barack Obama's new NASA Administrator now stands at four: Retired Air Force Gen. Lester L. Lyles; retired Air Force Gen. Scott Gration; former NASA astronaut and retired Marine Corps general, Charles Bolden; and Steve Isakowitz, the Chief Financial Officer of the Department of Energy and a former top NASA official.

The administration has given no indication when the president will nominate his selection for the top job at NASA, but there are suggestions that it could be coming soon. All candidates are undergoing careful White House vetting and scrutiny. The eventual nominee will have to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

The names of Gration, Bolden and Lyles have been floated around Washington and NASA centers for several weeks now. All have been met by and large with a luke warm response. Bolden is being strongly backed by Florida's Democratic Senator Bill Nelson and some key players at Johnson Space Center in Houston. Gration was a key adviser to Obama during the campaign and did deal with space matters during the long march to the White House. Lyles is currently a member of the NASA Advisory Committee and is popular among some agency backers.

But the frontrunner, at least for now, appears to be Isakowitz.

He was sworn in as the Energy Department's CFO on June 1, 2007, after being unanimously confirmed by the Senate. Prior to that he has distinguished career serving at the Office of Management and Budget, the CIA and NASA. At NASA he was Deputy Chief Financial Officer and Comptroller, and Deputy Associate Administrator in charge of major space exploration programs. An engineer, he used to work for Lockheed Martin.

His experience and reputation, and the fact that he is proven to be confirmable by the Senate appears to have put him at the front of the pack. He also looks like he may be winning support from key players in Congress, including, Maryland's powerful Democratic Sen. Barbara Mikulski.

Neither Mikulski not Isakowitz could be immediately reached for  comment for this blog post. However, several administration insiders and industry players are saying that Isakowitz is the current favorite.

It is not known what his views are on key issues facing the agency such as the viability of NASA's current moon rocket designs, keeping the space shuttle flying longer or human vs. robotic missions.

У кадровых военных к моменту отставки инициативная область мозга полностью атрофирована. Так что вся его "политическая программа" - строго следовать инструкциям и следить чтоб все остальные это делали.
Не самый лучший вариант для администратопа НАСА. Но и не самый худший - космонавтом случайно не становятся.
