Virgin Orbit plans to launch in March the Dutch Ministry of Defense's first nanosatellite into orbit. This military satellite is an experimental project set up in a unique collaboration with the Royal Netherlands Air Force. With this launch, the Dutch Ministry of Defense takes its first steps into the space domain.
From both a civil and military perspective our society has become dependent on satellites orbiting our planet. For example, satellites enable the use of navigation and communications systems. The use of satellite systems for military purposes encompasses both opportunities and threats.
NATO in 2019 underlined the importance of using space by declaring it as an operational domain. The Dutch Ministry of Defense recognizes this. The Defence Vision 2035 describes, among other things, the use of space as an indispensable link within an information driven Armed Forces.
In cooperation with Dutch industry and knowledge institutes, the choice has been made to explore scalable and affordable capacities for the military use of space. Nanosatellites, slightly bigger than a milk carton, are less expensive than the traditional and bigger satellites and can be launched into orbit on a bigger scale, which results in a less vulnerable and more redundant system.
BRIK-II is a nanosatellite in which the partners who are involved want to demonstrate that a satellite like BRIK-II is effective for relevant (military) information and communication applications.
Stronger together
The construction of BRIK-II underlines the innovative abilities the Dutch industry and knowledge institutes are capable of in developing relevant military or dual-use capacities. The company Innovative Solutions in Space located in Delft is the designer and integrator of BRIK-II. Royal Netherlands Aerospace Centre has developed a sophisticated instrument based on new technologies which will be put into practice on BRIK-II.
Furthermore there is a collaboration with the Delft University of Technology and an international collaboration with the University of Oslo. The US-based company Virgin Orbit has been selected to carry out the launch of BRIK-II.
BRIK-II
Not entirely coincidentally the first Dutch nanosatellite has been named BRIK-II. This name symbolizes the development of the Dutch aerospace since 1913.
In 1913 Marinus van Meel built "The BRIK," which was the first aircraft for the "Luchtvaartafdeeling" (now known as Royal Netherlands Air Force) in Soesterberg. This plane was used by the Dutch Armed Forces to explore the domain of aviation.
To commemorate his pioneering spirit, the first nanosatellite gets the honorable name of BRIK-II.

Introducing Our Next Mission: Tubular Bells, Part One
Since our flawless Launch Demo 2 mission in January, the Virgin Orbit team hasn't wasted any time in working towards yet another flight with LauncherOne. At this very moment, the rocket that will carry our next customers to space is fully assembled, and in the coming days we'll ship it out to our Mojave test site for prelaunch operations. As all this is now familiar work, our team has been able to operate at a whole new level of efficiency and precision.

Historically, the space industry has been slow to ramp up from early tests to the start of commercial service. Thanks to a world-class team and our fully operational, cutting-edge factory, Virgin Orbit is breaking that tradition. Currently, our efforts are on track for our next orbital launch in June.
We're proud to have retired our "Launch Demo" program and the corresponding mission names, and are delighted to share with you some details about our upcoming mission, which we have named "Tubular Bells, Part One."

» The U.S. Department of Defense, which is launching three CubeSat sets as part of the DoD Space Test Program's (STP) Rapid Agile Launch (RALI) Initiative. This launch, also known as STP-27VPA, was awarded to Virgin Orbit subsidiary VOX Space by the DoD's Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), an organization working to accelerate the adoption of commercial technology into the U.S. military to strengthen national security. 
» The Royal Netherlands Air Force, which is launching the Netherlands' first military satellite, a CubeSat called BRIK II, built and integrated by Innovative Solutions in Space, with contributions from the University of Oslo, the Delft University of Technology, and Royal Netherlands Aerospace Centre.
» SatRevolution, which is launching the first two optical satellites, STORK-4 and STORK-5 (A.K.A. MARTA), of the company's 14-satellite STORK constellation.

Из этих спутников три принадлежат Пентагону, один - Минобороны Нидерландов, оставшиеся два - польской компании SatRevolution, отмечает портал.
Первый успешный запуск LauncherOne с 10 микроспутниками NASA на борту Virgin Orbit произвела 17 января. Модифицированный самолет Boeing 747 с закрепленной под крылом двухступенчатой ракетой-носителем вылетел из космопорта в пустыне Мохаве (штат Калифорния). Через 50 минут LauncherOne отделился в автоматическом режиме от авиалайнера над Тихим океаном и, включив свои двигатели, вывел CubeSat на орбиту.
Ракета достигает 21,3 м в длину. Способна выводить в космос спутники массой до 500 кг. В компании считают, что ее метод доставки грузов на орбиту обеспечивает большую мобильность - Boeing может взлетать из аэропортов любой страны - и обходится дешевле, чем у конкурентов.

The Virgin Orbit team is excited to share an update on timing for our upcoming mission, Tubular Bells: Part One! 

WHEN
With wet dress rehearsal successfully completed, our team is proceeding through the final routine items on our pre-flight checklist. We're coordinating with our stakeholders to identify the final preferred targets for launch, with an eye on June 30th or the early days of July.
We will only proceed with the mission if all conditions for launch are nominal. If for some reason the launch is delayed, we have backup windows extending through July.

WHERE
Our carrier aircraft Cosmic Girl will take off from Mojave Air and Spaceport in California, and will travel approximately 1 hour out to sea before releasing the rocket just off the Pacific coast.
