02.11.2019 00:00:00

A U.S. cargo craft is poised to resupply the International Space Station just days after a Japanese space freighter departed the orbiting lab Friday afternoon. ...

Northrop Grumman's Cygnus resupply ship sits atop an Antares rocket loaded with 8,200 pounds of science experiments and station hardware. Liftoff will take place on Saturday at 9:59 a.m. EDT from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia.

Meir and Koch will be in the cupola Monday morning awaiting the arrival of Cygnus. Meir will command the Canadarm2 to reach out and grapple Cygnus at 4:10 a.m. EST. Koch will back up Meir as astronaut Andrew Morgan of NASA monitors Cygnus' approach and rendezvous.

The countdown has entered a pre-planned built-in hold. An upd ated status on the countdown from Northrop Grumman launch conductor Adam Lewis shows the Antares rocket, the Cygnus spacecraft and the Wallops range are all "green" at this time for liftoff at 9:59:47 a.m. EDT (1359:47 GMT).

The Cygnus spacecraft se t for launch aboard the Antares rocket is named the S.S. Alan Bean in honor of the late astronaut who was the fourth person to walk on the moon on the Apollo 12 mission, and who later commanded a two-month expedition on the Skylab space station.

The S.S. Alan Bean is packed with 8,168 pounds (3,705 kilograms) of supplies and experiments heading to the International Space Station. Here's a breakdown of the cargo manifest provided by NASA:
    [/li]
  • 4,372 pounds (1,983 kilograms) of science investigations
  • 1,667 pounds (756 kilograms) of vehicle hardware
  • 1,499 pounds (680 kilograms) of crew supplies
  • 262 pounds (119 kilograms) of unpressurized cargo (NanoRacks CubeSat deployer)
  • 229 pounds (104 kilograms) of spacewalk equipment
  • 77 pounds (35 kilograms) of Northrop Grumman hardware
  • 37 pounds (17 kilograms) of computer resources
  • 24 pounds (11 kilograms) of Russian hardware
The Cygnus supply ship is expected to remain berthed at the International Space Station's Unity module until Jan. 13, when it will be released by the station's robotic arm.

The automated cargo carrier, loaded with trash after its departure from the station, will fire its engine to climb into a higher orbit roughly 300 miles (500 kilometers) above Earth to deploy multiple CubeSats before re-entering the atmosphere and burning up to end the mission.
