January 17, 2019Stephen Clark

01/18/2019 02:55 Stephen Clark

Seven Japanese and Vietnamese smallsats are set to ride Japan's solid-fueled Epsilon launcher into orbit at 0050 GMT Friday (7:50 p.m. EST Thursday) on a mission that engineers say will demonstrate the light-class rocket's ability to accommodate multiple payloads on a single flight.

The rocket will blast off from a launch pad at the Uchinoura Space Center, located in Japan's Kagoshima prefecture in the southwestern part of the country.

Today's mission will mark the fourth flight of the Epsilon rocket, which is smaller than Japan's workhorse H-2A launcher and is sized to loft small satellites into orbit.

The largest of the satellites set for launch is named RAPIS 1, short for Rapid Innovative payload demonstration Satellite 1. Built by Japanese startup Axelspace for the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency -- JAXA -- the roughly 440-pound (200-kilogram) RAPIS 1 spacecraft will test the performance of a new thin membrane solar panel design, a "green" propulsion system using non-toxic fuel, a high-speed X-band communications system, a low-cost, miniaturized terminal to receive signals from navigation satellites, and a camera suite for Earth observation and to monitor deployment of the solar array, among other prototype technologies.

Also aboard the four-stage rocket is ALE 1, the first of two satellites launching this year developed by Astro Live Experiences, a Japanese venture that aims to create artificial "meteor showers" by releasing tiny pellets to re-enter the atmosphere. By early 2020, the ALE 1 satellite will maneuver to an orbit low enough to ensure the particles safely re-enter the atmosphere, and don't become space junk. The company plans to create the artificial meteor shower over Japan next year.

The Epsilon rocket will deploy RAPIS 1, ALE 1 and the other satellite passengers in orbits approximately 310 miles (500 kilometers) above Earth.

The Epsilon's fourth stage, which burns liquid propellant unlike the rocket's three boost stage motors, will maneuver the satellites to ensure they are sufficiently separated during the deployment sequence, which is set to conclude around 1 hour, 10 minutes after liftoff.
