Testing AsiaSat 9 in a Simulated Space Environment

The AsiaSat 9 spacecraft is hoisted to the Space Thermal Vacuum Simulation test chamber.
AsiaSat 9 enters a thermal vacuum chamber for testing, after completing a rigorous assembly and ambient temperature test program.
Спойлер
Once the installation of the spacecraft has been completed, the large blue lid will be secured on the chamber to create a vacuum sealed controlled environment.  Different thermal environment scenarios are then simulated to test the satellite performance over expected beginning and end-of-life temperature limits (with margin).

Over the course of several weeks AsiaSat 9 is exposed to various temperature environments and extensive testing to verify performance of all subsystems.

What is a thermal vacuum test?

A TVAC test, or Thermal Vacuum Chamber test is used to demonstrate whether a spacecraft can perform within specifications over the anticipated thermal environment in the vacuum of space. It also provides a window to assess the functional performance in a simulated space environment to confirm that the design is technically sound and workmanship is of good quality.

Critical Design Review (Launch Vehicle)

AsiaSat 9 Proton Launch Vehicle Critical Design Review (CDR) was conducted in Moscow on 13 and 14 October 2016.

Representatives from launch service provider (ILS and KhSC), satellite manufacturer (SSL) and AsiaSat Engineering and Consultant Team participated in the meeting.

All technical discussions went smoothly and all parties agreed that the CDR was a success.

AsiaSat 9 Update - Spacecraft Dynamics & Acoustic Testing

Ayman Kamel

AsiaSat 9 spacecraft has successfully completed the dynamics test phase which simulates environment exposures seen by the spacecraft during launch.

The first environmental test exposure is a high power acoustics field (a very large sound pressure wave). This simulates the rocket fairing environment during liftoff.
Спойлер
The second environmental is a 3 axis vibration test that simulates the vibration caused by the rocket engines during liftoff and other flight phases of the mission through separation of the spacecraft in orbit.

AsiaSat 9 spacecraft rolled into the stacked speakers circle in preparation for acoustics testing. The circle is closed off with additional speaker stacks for the actual acoustic test exposure.

What is a dynamics testing?

Dynamics testing is performed to confirm the spacecraft can withstand the launch environments imposed by the rocket carrying the spacecraft into orbit. Highly specialised test facilities are used to expose the spacecraft to sound pressure waves and vibration levels created by the rocket. The levels used during test are higher than actual launch exposure to demonstrate the robustness of the spacecraft workmanship and design.

by Caleb Henry — July 31, 2017

AsiaSat-9 is ILS's third mission for the year after Hispasat's Amazonas-5 satellite. Credit: Roscosmos

WASHINGTON — Hong Kong-based satellite fleet operator AsiaSat said July 31 that its next satellite will launch Sept. 28 on a Proton rocket fr om the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

The satellite, AsiaSat-9, has been in storage with manufacturer Space Systems Loral since passing its pre-ship review in April, AsiaSat said.
Спойлер

The launch, arranged by International Launch Services, the commercial arm of Proton manufacturer Khrunichev, will be the third commercial Proton launch this year. ILS spokesperson Karen Soriano told SpaceNews July 31 that Hispasat's Amazonas 5 is ahead of AsiaSat-9 in Proton's launch queue. She declined to say when the Amazonas-5 launch would occur.

AsiaSat-9 is a replacement satellite for AsiaSat-4, a C- and Ku-band telecommunications satellite from Boeing that launched in 2003. Compared to its predecessor, AsiaSat-9 carries a high-throughput Ka-band payload, a higher power C-band payload, and Ku-band beams that are "cross-strapped" to allow uplinks and downlinks between themselves.

Proton conducted its first launch in nearly a year on June 7, orbiting the EchoStar-21 satellite for Englewood, Colorado-based fleet operator EchoStar. An upper stage anomaly in 2016 that didn't cause a failure but did spark an intense mission review, and the later discovery of an unusual solder in several upper stage engines, sidelined the rocket for about 12 months.

"With our newest satellite AsiaSat 9, we are primed to serve existing customers and new users as we reach a new milestone, presenting more cost-efficient opportunities, enhanced quality and faster services for applications through mobility, broadband data networks, and DTH [direct-to-home] services," Andrew Jordan, AsiaSat president and CEO, said in a prepared statement July 31. "As we have broadened our scope and innovated to provide advanced satellite solutions, we are confident in the opportunities satellite services create for future broadcasting and communications throughout the Asia-Pacific region."

AsiaSat-9 includes new coverage for Myanmar, wh ere AsiaSat-customer KBZ recently expanded capacity on AsiaSat-4 and -7 for broadband connectivity, as well as new coverage for Indonesia and Mongolia. The satellite's footprint will cover the Asia-Pacific region from 122 degrees east.
