NASA is investigating the source of black mold that contaminated cargo bags bound for the International Space Station, delaying the next launch of supplies from Florida's Space Coast.
An unmanned Orbital ATK Cygnus craft, which had been scheduled to launch March 10 atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket, now is targeting a March 22 liftoff from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, according to ULA.
NASA said microbial analysis during a routine inspections at Kennedy Space Center found evidence of common black mold on two bags. The space agency decided to disinfect every bag, which required removing cargo already packed in the Cygnus.
It's the first time black mold has caused a problem during ISS cargo processing.
"Micro-organisms are everywhere and this type of micro-organism is not uncommon," said Dan Huot, a spokesman at NASA's Johnson Space Center, home of the ISS program. "NASA inspects, samples and disinfects cargo bags to ensure a safe environment for the crew members."
Molds can cause stuffiness, eye irritation, wheezing and skin irritation in people sensitive to them, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and more severe reactions like fever and shortness of breath for those with serious allergies.
Earlier inspections had determined that the Cygnus vehicle's pressurized module was clean. The module arrived at KSC's Space Station Processing Facility last month after shipping across the Atlantic Ocean from manufacturer Thales Alenia Space's base in Italy.
Lockheed Martin is responsible for stowing ISS cargo under NASA's Cargo Mission Contract.
The upcoming resupply mission, labeled OA-6, is Orbital ATK's fifth under a NASA contract worth up to $3.1 billion. NASA recently awarded Orbital ATK one of three follow-on Commercial Resupply Services contracts, ensuring that the Cygnus will visit the ISS through 2024.
The mission is the second of two currently planned from Cape Canaveral launching a Cygnus on the Atlas V, following a successful first flight together in December that delivered about 7,700 pounds of cargo to the ISS.
Orbital ATK this summer aims to resume launches from Virginia of a redesigned Antares rocket, which is returning to flight after a failure in October 2014.
SpaceX is NASA's other commercial cargo provider over the next several years. The timing of its next launch of a Dragon capsule from Cape Canaveral — the first since a Falcon 9 rocket failure last June — is still to be determined.

NASA delays space station cargo run due to mold on packing bags

NASA's next cargo run to the International Space Station will be delayed for at least two weeks after black mold was found in two fabric bags used for packing clothing, food and other supplies, the U.S. space agency said on Wednesday.

The source of the mold, a common fungal growth in humid climates like Florida's, is under investigation by NASA and Lockheed Martin, which prepares NASA cargo for launch aboard two commercial carriers, Orbital ATK and privately owned SpaceX.

An Orbital Cygnus cargo ship was more than halfway packed for the launch, scheduled for March 10, when the mold was found during routine inspections and microbial sampling, NASA spokesman Daniel Huot said.

NASA and Lockheed decided to unpack the cargo, disinfect all the bags and then repack everything aboard the capsule, delaying launch.

The Cygnus' liftoff aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket is now scheduled for late March.

Had the mold reached the station, the crew aboard would not have been in any danger, but NASA decided to clean the bags as a precaution, Huot added.

NASA is still assessing what, if any, impact delaying the Cygnus launch will have on the next cargo run planned by SpaceX. SpaceX has not delivered supplies to the space station since April 2015. Its last shipment was destroyed during a June 2015 launch accident.

Kennedy Space Center teams wielding hydrogen peroxide and wet wipes have averted the threat of a black mold infestation aboard the International Space Station.
The cleaning crews disinfected bags holding thousands of pounds of cargo that is expected to launch to the ISS next month inside an Orbital ATK Cygnus spacecraft, a precaution taken after tests found common black mold on two of the bags.
Investigation continues into the mold's source and how to prevent another contamination event, but NASA has confirmed that KSC and Florida humidity are not to blame for this one, which was the first of its kind.
That's because the microbial sampling, a standard pre-launch procedure, was performed before the cargo shipped from Houston to KSC. Test results did not become available, however, until after the cargo had been packed in the Cygnus.
"The contamination was identified from sampling in Houston, not Florida," said Dan Huot, a spokesman at NASA's Johnson Space Center.
The issue pushed back launch of the Cygnus by an Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station from March 10 to the current target date of March 22.
After the tests flagged the contamination, all cargo bags were removed from the Cygnus.
Personnel from Lockheed Martin, the contractor responsible for handling station cargo, applied enough hydrogen peroxide to penetrate the bags' woven fabric, then let them dry out. Handling equipment, tables and shelves also were cleaned.
Orbital ATK wiped down the Cygnus' interior with wet, lint-free wipes before the cargo was loaded back inside.
NASA says another batch of cargo on its way to Florida has been confirmed to be clean. The cargo is kept in a controlled environment throughout its travels, not exposed to outside humidity.
NASA did not confirm the total amount of cargo being launched, but the last Cygnus flight in December hauled roughly 7,700 pounds to orbit. That spacecraft, now packed with trash, is scheduled to depart the station Friday morning on its way to burning up in the atmosphere.
The next Cygnus mission will be Orbital ATK's fifth of 10 currently planned under a NASA Commercial Resupply Services contract worth more than $2 billion. One Cygnus did not reach orbit due to an Antares rocket failure in 2014.

The spacecraft, when encapsulated in its 13-foot-diameter (4-meter) bullet-like payload fairing, weighs in at over 16,500 pounds, making it the heaviest Atlas-V payload ULA will have ever flown, slightly heavier even than the previous OA-4 Cygnus "SS Deke Slayton II" (confirmed to AmericaSpace by ULA this afternoon). Both surpass the 7.5-ton weight of the NAVY's Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) satellites launched over the last several years from the same pad, which held the title previously.
