United Launch Alliance preparing for its next Atlas 5

Assembly of a Atlas 5 rocket kicked off Friday morning at Cape Canaveral to stack a powerful version of the vehicle launching next month.

Liftoff of the Atlas 5-541 configured rocket is planned for March 25. The exact launch time is withheld for security reasons.
The mission will launch the NROL-67 mission for the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office, the secretive government agency responsible for the country's fleet of spy satellites.
The 541 version of the Atlas 5 is nearly the most powerful, with four of five available strap-on boosters employed for added thrust at liftoff. The vehicle also has a five meter nose cone and a single engine Centaur upper stage.
It is the same configuration that hurled NASA's Curiosity rover to Mars in 2011.
The NRO has three missions planned in 2014. NROL-67 will be followed by NROL-33 in May and a California launch of NROL-35 at year's end, all on Atlas 5 rockets.
The stacking work began Friday with erection of the first stage onto the mobile launch platform at the Complex 41's Vertical Integration Facility. The stage is equipped with an RD-180 main engine.
Next week will be spent attaching the solid-propellant boosters. The Centaur and its RL10 cryogenic engine will be installed the following week.
Meanwhile, workers have assembled another Atlas at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California to launch an Air Force weather observatory on April 3.
The Atlas program recently completed its first flight of the year in successful fashion -- the Jan. 23 launch of NASA's Tracking and Data Relay Satellite L.

Gearing up for the first National Reconnaissance Office Launch of the year, United Launch Alliance has completed the assembly of an Atlas V 541 rocket that was topped with its secret payload last week to begin final preparations for launch. Liftoff fr om Space Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station is set for March 25 during a 90-minute launch period starting at 18:05 UTC.

Assembly of the Atlas V rocket started on February 7 after the post-launch operations related to the previous Atlas V mission that lifted TDRS-L were complete. The large Common Core Booster was moved fr om the Atlas Spaceflight Operations Center to the Vertical Integration Facility wh ere it was installed on the Mobile Launch Platform. The CCB used by the Atlas V is 32.46 meters long and 3.81 meters in diameter with an empty mass of 21,054 Kilograms. For launch, the CCB is filled with 284,000 Kilograms of propellants for consumption by the massive RD-180 main engine of the Atlas V.

In the 541 version, the Atlas V uses four Solid Rocket Motors to provide an extra kick during the first 94 seconds of flight. The four boosters were installed on the first stage of the rocket over several days in February. Each of the boosters is 1.58 meter in diameter, 20 metes long and holds nearly 41,000 Kilograms of solid propellant. When the boosters were attached to the first stage, the Centaur Upper Stage was rolled to SLC-41 wh ere it was hoisted above the Common Core Booster and installed on the vehicle. Centaur is 3.05 meters in diameter and 12.68 meters long with an inert mass of 2,243 Kilograms. On launch day, it is loaded with 20,830 Kilograms of Liquid Hydrogen & Liquid Oxygen to power its RL-10 engine. With the Upper Stage in place, the Atlas V stack began testing operations in February.

Encapsulated in the five-meter payload fairing, the classified NROL-67 payload made its way to the launch complex last Friday to be installed atop the assembled launch vehicle.

With the integration of the launcher complete and the payload installed, the next week is filled with a series of tests including a Combined Systems Test and various countdown and launch simulations to ensure the vehicle is ready for flight.

Range Instrumentation problem (та же причина указывалась при задержке с пуском Атлас-5 / NROL-36 полтора года назад).
