ЦитироватьSES-8 and Thaicom-6 Satellites Delivered to Customers This Summer

Spacecraft Are 33rd and 34th GEOStar Satellites Produced for Customers Around the Globe

In June and July, Orbital delivered the Thaicom-6 GEOStar communications spacecraft to one of Orbital's newest customers, Thaicom PLC of Thailand, and the SES-8 spacecraft to SES of Luxembourg, a repeat GEOStar customer for Orbital. A hybrid Ku- and C-band spacecraft based on Orbital's GEOStar-2 spacecraft bus design, Thaicom-6 will provide a full range of end-to-end satellite communications services over Southeast Asia and Southern Africa, including direct-to-home and digital TV services.
Also based on Orbital's GEOStar-2 design, SES-8 will provide Ku-band communications for South Asia and Indo-China and Ka-band communications for the Asia-Pacific region.
Generating approximately five kilowatts of payload power, the hybrid satellite is the sixth GEOStar satellite to be ordered from Orbital by SES. Both SES-8 and Thaicom-6 are scheduled for launch on Falcon 9 rockets from Cape Canaveral, Florida later in 2013.
SES-8 and Thaicom-6 represent the 33rd and 34th GEOStar-based satellites ordered by customers around the globe. Optimized for small- and medium-class satellite missions, Orbital's highly successful GEOStar communications satellites provide up to eight kilowatts of payload power and can accommodate virtually all types of commercial communications payloads. Orbital expects to confirm orders for several new GEOStar communications satellites from new and repeat customers in the coming months.

Just got an email fr om SpaceX saying there will be a louder-than-normal test at the McGregor development site — which pretty much means a nine-engine first stage firing — as early as Saturday.
The email followed this from the local office of emergency management:

ЦитироватьPending the successful mission with SES-8, SpaceX will then turnaround their Cape facility for the next Falcon 9 v1.1 launch, realigned to a December 12 NET (No Earlier Than) launch date, per L2 information. This places SpaceX into a stance where they will be launching two missions in the space of a month – a first for the company.

This mission will also be tasked with lofting an Orbital-built satellite, namely the Thaicom-6 spacecraft.

Z3The 3,325 kg (7,330 lb) satellite will be located at 78.5 degrees East Longitude, and carry a hybrid Ku- and C-band payload that will generate approximately 3.7 kilowatts of payload power.

The Ku-band payload will be comprised of eight active transponders providing services to Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar. The C-band payload will feature 12 active C-band transponders providing services via a regional beam to Southeast Asia, and six active C-band transponders providing services via a south Africa beam to southern Africa and Madagascar.

Based on Orbital's GeoStar-2 platform, the satellite is expected to have a service life of 15 years.

Z741Preparations for this launch are in full swing, with a test firing confirmed to have taken place on Friday at SpaceX's Rocket Development and Test Facility in McGregor, Texas.

Following the series of test firings of the first Falcon 9 v1.1 stages, testing the set of nine Merlin 1D engines together as a set, stages for the upcoming launches are expected to enter and depart from Texas at a faster pace, allowing SpaceX to fulfil what is an increasingly busy launch manifest.

ЦитироватьWith the delay to the SES-8 mission, the prospect of the next flight of the F9 v1.1 – carrying the Thaicom-6 satellite – occurring just one month later are all-but gone.
A separation of 30 days between launches is understood to be a hard limit, resulting in the Thaicom-6 mission having to avoid the holiday period and re-target for a launch in the new year.

ЦитироватьHowever, upd ated L2 information has noted the WDR was "scrubbed/cancelled", allowing for it to become part of the Static Fire test. This was soon followed by the launch date moving to a preliminary date of November 25.

Reasons for the latest slip are not fully clear. However, it is understood to include working Range approval for pre-launch events surrounding the upcoming MAVEN launch and ongoing work to complete the upgrades to the SLC-40 launch site for the Falcon 9 v1.1,

The following launch, tasked with launching Thaicom-6, was se t to follow one month after the SES-8 mission.

With this minimum separation of one month between launches, the Christmas holidays come into play, resulting in Thaicom-6′s launch highly likely to move into a January launch window. Once again, a new launch date would require the associated approval from the Eastern Range.
