Суть в том, что НАСА не хочет ждать JIMO
У меня сложилось впечатление, что реактор уже разработан. Видимо, наработки у военных были неслабыми.
Вот предлагаемые варианты миссий
·         Technology Demonstration Mission to test fission power system in deep space with no specific science goal or destination.
·         Lunar Geophysical Orbiter that in extended mission mode could serve as a telecom asset for future lunar missions.
·         Next Generation Mars Telecommunications Station.
·         Near Earth Object (NEO) Asteroid Mission that would involve stopovers at multiple objects, perhaps landing hardware on a NEO to assess the ability to modify the trajectory of a celestial body.
·         Venus Orbiter, more like a Magellan II spacecraft that would carry out low altitude runs over the cloudy planet with state-of-the-art radar.
·         Astrophysics Mission that would use high power levels from a fission power source, likely sending collected science information at very high data rates.

Так-так. Вот интересно, что в свете этих сведений  в приличном обществе сделали бы с человеком, который не так давно замозабвенно изголялся над советскими Топазами и с предельно непререкаемым видом заявлял об их полной бесперспективности? А, Старый ?

Эти проекты все до единого на реакторе. То есть среди них выберут один-два наиболее подходящий. Но результаты хотят получить до запуска JIMO

While NASA maintains open lines of communication with various components of
the federal government, DoD has no role in this program. Project Prometheus
program requirements have and will continue to be established to meet NASA's
science and technology needs for space exploration.
Meanwhile, NASA works very closely with the Department of Energy (DOE) to
develop space science missions using nuclear power sources. As we expand
such cooperation to include both radioisotope and nuclear reactor power
systems, we will be calling upon more of DOE's experience base and technical
infrastructure than that necessary for radioisotope work alone.

А что здесь за сведения? О каком агрегате речь? Агрегат для околоземной орбиты?

   Это кому тут "Топазы" не понравились?  :wink:  Чем плохи, чем не угодили? И как без них, к примеру, на спутниках радиолокационной разведки обходиться предполагаете?
