 By Michael A. Taverna

PARIS — Space managers in Europe say improvements contemplated for the Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) and the International Space Station (ISS) would sharply increase its cargo volume while offering a more realistic cost comparison with a proposed Advanced Reentry Vehicle (ARV) derivative.

Luigi Maria Quaglino, vice president for space infrastructure and transport at Thales Alenia Space, says engineers are working on modifications to the ATV's internal structure that would sharply boost its current 7-metric-ton dry cargo capacity. One factor driving the modifications, Quaglino says, is a possible reduction in the reboost capability of the ATV to enable NASA Commercial Orbital Transportation Services spacecraft to dock at a lower altitude, lowering the ATV's fuel-storage requirement.

Another, says Simona di Pippo, the European Space Agency's manned spaceflight director, is a planned improvement in the ISS's life-support system that would improve water recycling, reducing ATV water tankage requirements. The improvements would be adopted for ATV-3, -4 and -5, currently under construction.

These are separate from enhancements introduced in ATV-2, following a review of the first ATV flight in March 2008, or a midlife update (MLU) planned for a further pair of ATVs that could be acquired to meet ISS life-extension requirements. ATV-2 was recently cleared for launch on Feb. 15 (Aerospace DAILY, Oct. 5).

The MLU would be necessary to change out electronics and other obsolescent parts, says Astrium's ATV program manager, Olivier de la Bourdonnaye. Planners are leaning toward replacing ATV-6 and -7 with the ARV, arguing that the ATV modifications would substantially reduce the cost differential between the two options.

October 15, 2010 – Ariane Flight V200

The protective shipping container with the Ariane 5 ES launcher's cryogenic core stage arrives at the Spaceport, pulled by a multi-purpose tug vehicle.

The milestone 200th Ariane for launch has been delivered to the Spaceport in French Guiana, where it will be readied for a February 15, 2011 liftoff with Europe's second Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) to service the International Space Station.

This is an Ariane 5 ES version of Arianespace's heavy-lift launcher, and it will loft the ATV named after German astronomer and mathematician Johannes Kepler, placing it in orbit for a rendezvous with the International Space Station.

The Ariane 5 ES arrived in French Guiana this week aboard the MN Colibri, which is one of two sea-going roll-on/roll-off vessels used by Arianespace to transport launchers and related equipment from their European manufacturers to South America.  After docking at Pariacabo Port, the Ariane 5 hardware was unloaded and moved by road to the Spaceport.

Arianespace's February 2011 mission will mark the second ATV launch, following its successful orbiting of the ATV Jules Verne in 2008.  These unmanned logistics spacecraft are part of Europe's contribution to the International Space Station's operation and maintenance.  All ATVs planned by Europe have been entrusted to Arianespace for launch, with six flights currently included in the company's manifest.

To date, a total of 196 Ariane flights have been performed since the family of launch vehicles began operation in 1978.  The 197th mission is scheduled for October 28, using an Ariane 5 ECA version to orbit the W3B and BSAT-3b telecommunications satellites.

Arianespace operates two versions of Ariane 5: the ES version for flights to low- and medium-Earth orbits; and Ariane 5 ECA for GTO (geostationary transfer orbit) missions.

December 9, 2010 – Ariane Flight 200

Assembly of the milestone 200th Ariane is now underway at the Spaceport in preparation for its February 2011 mission with Europe's second Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV), which will service the International Space Station.

This Ariane 5 ES version of Arianespace's workhorse heavy-lift launcher is being assembled in the Spaceport's Launcher Integration Building, where activity began mid-week with the core cryogenic stage's positioning over the mobile launch table.  It was followed by rollout of Ariane 5's two large solid rocket boosters for mating with the core stage.

Ariane 5 is the latest version of Europe's Ariane launcher family, which began operations in 1979 and has orbited a full range of payloads that include telecommunications satellites, Earth observation and meteorology platforms, space exploration probes, along with defense and security spacecraft.

Arianespace operates two standardized versions of Ariane 5: the ES version for flights to low- and medium-Earth orbits; and the Ariane 5 ECA for GTO (geostationary transfer orbit) missions.

The ATV for next February's flight is named after German astronomer/mathematician Johannes Kepler, and will be the second such unmanned logistics spacecraft launched by Ariane 5.  These ATVs are part of Europe's contribution to the International Space Station's operation and maintenance.

ЦитироватьEurope's Automated Transfer Vehicle is readied for its February launch on Ariane 5

January 11, 2011 – Ariane Flight 200

The Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) for Arianespace's year-opening mission in 2011 – which also will be the milestone 200th flight of an Ariane launcher – is ready for integration on its Ariane 5, in preparation for a February 15 liftoff from the Spaceport in French Guiana.

Designed for servicing of the International Space Station, this ATV will be the second launched by Arianespace for the European Space Agency, following the orbiting of Europe's first such logistics spacecraft aboard an Ariane 5 in 2008.

The ATV for next month's mission is named after German astronomer and mathematician Johannes Kepler, and it will bring cargo that includes fuel, air and water for the International Space Station's crew, along with hardware for the orbital facility.

Arianespace's launch of ATV Johannes Kepler will utilize the Ariane 5 ES version of its heavy-lift workhorse.  In the company's strategy to standardize production for quality and reproducibility, Arianespace uses two versions of the launcher: the Ariane 5 ES for missions to low-Earth orbit, including the ATV and for satellite constellations; and the Ariane 5 ECA, employed on flights to geostationary transfer orbit, primarily carrying telecommunications spacecraft – which represents a majority of its missions.

The February 15 flight with the ATV will kick off a busy 2011 for Arianespace, during which the company plans to perform 12 missions.  They will use Ariane 5, Soyuz and Vega in a combined total of nine launches from the Spaceport, along with three Soyuz operated from Kazakhstan's Baikonur Cosmodrome.

The ATV Johannes Kepler is fueled in the Spaceport's S5 payload integration facility.

ЦитироватьATV Johannes Kepler gears up for space journey

14 January 2011
ATV-2 is almost ready for launch on 15 February from Europe's Spaceport. It will be the heaviest load ever lofted into space by the Ariane 5 rocket, making the 200th flight of the European launcher even more spectacular.

ESA's latest Automated Transfer Vehicle space ferry, named after the German astronomer and mathematician Johannes Kepler, is now fully fuelled, its oxygen tanks are filled and most of the cargo from ESA and NASA is placed inside.

Only last-minute cargo of up to 400 kg will be added two weeks before launch using a special access device.

While the first ATV in 2008 performed a series of demonstrations on its way to the International Space Station (ISS), Johannes Kepler will head directly to its destination.

The planned journey includes some extra days to allow for possible delays, but the docking has to take place on 26 February to meet the busy ISS schedule.

Posted on 17 January 2011 by Daniel

Изображение кликабельно.

The planned schedule for ATV-2 docking to the ISS has been evolving in the past days, and it now appears that the forecast date may move up. We heard from Nico Dettmann, ESA's ATV programme manager, late last week who wrote: "The currently planned ATV-2 docking date is 26 February. However, there is a to-be-confirmed request by NASA whether the docking date can be anticipated to 23 February. This change would not impact the launch date." (See more details on the busy comings & goings at the ISS in our earlier post.)

With that in mind, here's a short run-down on foreseen dates relating to ATV and vessels arriving at/departing from the ISS. As always, these dates are subject to change – so you should check back here to the blog regularly... :-)

20 January – HTV2 launch
24 January – Progress M-08M/40P undock
27 January – HTV2 berthing
28 January – Progress M-09M/41P launch
31 January – Progress M-09M/41P docking
15 February – ATV Johannes Kepler launch from Kourou, 22:07 UT (23:07) CET
19 February – Progress M-07M/39P undock
23 February – ATV docking to ISS Zvezda service module (SM) aft
24 February – STS-133/Discovery launch – not earlier than this date
24 February – HTV2 unberthing (Node-2 nadir)
16 March – Soyuz TMA-01M/24S undock/landing (end of Increment 26)

ЦитироватьArianespace receives the Ariane 5 for its February mission with Europe's second Automated Transfer Vehicle

January 17, 2011 – Ariane Flight 200

The 200th Ariane launcher has been delivered to Arianespace at the Spaceport, where it will receive the Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) payload for a February 15 liftoff on a servicing mission to the International Space Station.

This milestone Ariane 5 is now in the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building – having been transferred last Friday from the integration facility where it was built up by prime contractor EADS Astrium.

The flight's ATV will be Europe's second such logistics spacecraft lofted by Arianespace, following the initial mission with an Ariane 5 in 2008.  Named after German astronomer and mathematician Johannes Kepler, the new ATV will ferry a 7.5-metric ton load of propellant, liquids, gas and dry goods to the International Space Station.

Arianespace's February 15 mission will be the first of six Ariane 5 flights planned by the company in 2011, along with five Soyuz launches and one Vega mission targeted during the year.

Installed on its mobile launch table, the Ariane 5 for Arianespace's February 15 mission approaches the Final Assembly Building where it is to be fitted with the ATV Johannes Kepler.
