Astra 3B [EADS AStrium]

SES Astra, an SES Global company, has announced in November 2006 that it has awarded the contract for the construction of its new satellite, Astra 3B, to the European satellite manufacturer Astrium. As prime contractor for Astra 3B, ASTRIUM will design and build the satellite.

Astra 3B will be a state-of-the-art Ku and Ka-band spacecraft designed for the distribution of both direct-to-home (DTH) broadcast services and two-way broadband services across Europe. After Astra 2B and Astra 1M, Astra 3B is the third Astra satellite to be built by ASTRIUM. The satellite will have 52 Ku-band transponders of which 20 transponders are to replace existing in-orbit capacity and 32 transponders which will create new capacity, thereby strenghtening 23.5E as the third orbital hotspot for European DTH services. Additionally there will be and 4 Ka-band transponders. Astra 3B is expected to be launched end of 2009.

Astra 3B will be built on a Eurostar-3000 platform, the latest version of the highly successful Eurostar series.

COMSATBw 1 and 2 [Astrium]

MilSat Services GmbH, a company set up by EADS SPACE Services and ND SatCom, will provide the German Bundeswehr's satellite communications system SatcomBW Step 2. The Federal Office for Information Management and Information Technology of the Bundeswehr (IT-AmtBw) and MilSat Services signed a contract in Koblenz, Germany on Wednesday. The contract became valid after the German budget 2006 has been enacted. The satellites in the SatcomBw-2 system are called COMSATBw 1 and 2

With the SATCOMBw programme, the German Armed Forces will have a secure information network for use by units on deployed missions. This will allow voice and fax as well as advanced data, video and multimedia applications. For the first time the Bundeswehr will have a secure communications system with dedicated military communications satellites. The entire system is due to start regular operation in the year 2009 and will constitute an important step in the implementation of the Bundeswehr concept for network-centric operations.

Along with the in-orbit delivery of two communications satellites for operations in military frequencies (SHF/UHF), the SatcomBw Stage 2 contract includes their operation, the delivery of a comprehensive ground user terminal segment and upgrading the network management centre already installed with the Bundeswehr. MilSat Services GmbH will also provide the Bundeswehr with commercial transmission capacities using Intelsat satellites and anchoring services thanks to new large ground stations.

Arianespace is laying the groundwork for another busy year with its workhorse Ariane 5, as the first mission of 2010 moves into its second phase of preparations and the follow-on flight's launch vehicle is delivered to French Guiana.

The heavy-lift Ariane 5 ECA for Arianespace's kick-off mission of 2010 was transferred from the Spaceport's Launcher Integration Building to the Final Assembly Building this morning, readying it to receive a dual-satellite payload.  

This flight is scheduled for March 24, carrying the ASTRA 3B telecommunications satellite for SES ASTRA, and the German COMSATBw-2 secure military relay platform.

As preparations move forward for the launch, the next flight's Ariane 5 has arrived in French Guiana aboard the MN Toucan roll-on roll-off transport ship.  After the MN Toucan docked at Pariacabo port on February 2, the launcher elements were transported to the Spaceport, where this vehicle will soon be taking shape in the Launcher Integration Building.

Thales Shipped the 2nd ComSatBw Satellite to Kourou

(Cannes, February 18, 2010) -- Thales Alenia Space announced today that it has shipped to the Kourou spaceport the second ComSatBw satellite, which will be launched on March 24 by an Ariane 5 ECA. As satellite prime contractor, Thales Alenia Space designed, built, integrated, tested and delivered both ComSatBw satellites on behalf of EADS Astrium, the space segment prime contractor.

ComSatBw military communications satellites deliver key services for the German armed forces. They provide a secure broadband network guaranteeing uninterrupted communications between the government, military authorities and armed forces deployed anywhere in the world.

ComSatBw multimission geostationary satellites are based on the Thales Alenia Space Spacebus 3000B2 platform, and carry payloads comprising SHF (Super-High-Frequency), and UHF transponders (Ultra-High-Frequency), mainly provided by EADS Astrium. Weighing about 2,500 kg at launch, ComSatBw satellites offer 3.5 kW of power and has a design life estimated at 15 years.

Both payloads for Arianespace's initial Ariane 5 flight of 2010 are now in French Guiana, following last week's arrival of COMSATBw-2 at Rochambeau International Airport near the capital city of Cayenne.
COMSATBw-2 is a secure relay platform that will deliver key services for the German Bundeswehr (German armed forces), and is a follow-on spacecraft to COMSATBw-1 - which was orbited by Ariane 5 in October 2009.

Together, the COMSATBw satellites will provide a secure broadband network which guarantees uninterrupted communications between the government, military authorities and armed forces deployed around the world.

Based on the Spacebus 3000B2 platform, COMSATBw-2 was designed, integrated and tested by satellite prime contractor Thales Alenia Space on behalf of EADS Astrium - which is the program's space segment prime contractor.

With this spacecraft's delivery to French Guiana, COMSATBw-2 joins its "sister" payload for the upcoming mission - ASTRA 3B, which currently is undergoing pre-launch checkout at the Spaceport. ASTRA 3B was built by Astrium for commercial telecommunications operator SES ASTRA.

An Ariane 5 ECA will orbit COMSATBw-2 and ASTRA 3B from Europe's Spaceport on March 24. This year-opening flight will initiate Arianespace's busy launch schedule in 2010, which plans for seven missions with the heavy-lift vehicle.

Propellant loading of ASTRA 3B was performed in the Spaceport's S5 satellite preparation facility, readying this EADS Astrium-built spacecraft for integration with its Ariane 5 ECA launcher.

ASTRA 3B is a state-of-the-art Ku- and Ka-band spacecraft designed for the distribution of both direct-to-home broadcast services and two-way broadband services across Europe and the Middle East.  It will be positioned at the increasingly important 23.5 deg. East orbital position for SES ASTRA.

Based on the Eurostar E3000 satellite bus, ASTRA 3B will have a liftoff mass of 5,470 kg. and is equipped with six mission antennas – four of which are side-mounted, to be deployed in orbit. The spacecraft has been designed for a nominal lifetime of 15 years.

ASTRA 3B will be joined on the upcoming mission by COMSATBw-2, a secure relay platform that will deliver key services for the German Bundeswehr (German armed forces).

COMSATBw-2 is based on the Spacebus 3000B2 platform, and was designed, integrated and tested by satellite prime contractor Thales Alenia Space on behalf of EADS Astrium – which is the program's space segment prime contractor.

The Ariane 5 ECA heavy-lift vehicle with ASTRA 3B and COMSATBw-2 is scheduled for launch on March 24, opening another busy year for Arianespace's workhorse vehicle.  A total of seven Ariane 5 flights are planned during 2010, maintaining the mission pace in response to the company's growing international order book.

Integration of ASTRA 3B was performed in the Ariane 5 Final Assembly Building at Europe's Spaceport.

Arianespace is ready for the start of a record operational year with the go-ahead for Friday's heavy-lift Ariane 5 launch, which will orbit SES ASTRA's ASTRA 3B commercial telecommunications satellite and Germany's COMSATBw-2 secure military relay platform.

Authorization for the March 26 flight was given following today's launch readiness review, which is held before each Arianespace mission.  It validated the "go" status for Ariane 5, along with its two spacecraft passengers, the launch infrastructure at the Spaceport in French Guiana, and the network of downrange tracking stations.

This approval clears Ariane 5 for its transfer tomorrow from the Final Assembly Building to the ELA-3 launch complex.  The final countdown will then begin, leading to the liftoff during a launch window on Friday that opens at 7:03 p.m. local time, and continues to 7:52 p.m. (22h03-22h52 UTC).

The flight is Arianespace's first in a busy year that is scheduled to include seven missions with Ariane 5, which will be joined in 2010 by the medium-lift Soyuz.  Preparations also are moving ahead for the lightweight Vega's upcoming introduction – which will provide Arianespace with a complete launcher family that operates side-by-side at the Spaceport.

For this Friday's launch, Ariane 5 will have a total lift performance of approximately 9,115 kg., which includes 7,970 kg. for the ASTRA 3B and COMSATBw-2 satellites, plus associated launcher integration hardware and the SYLDA dual-payload dispenser system.

From liftoff to the deployment of Ariane 5's two passengers, the flight is to have a duration of just over 33 minutes.  It will be the 194th mission of an Ariane family vehicle, and the 50th for Ariane 5.
