Einstein Probe explained
  SciNews
The Einstein Probe is equipped with a new generation of X-ray instruments with high sensitivity and a very wide view, designed to observe powerful blasts of X-ray light coming from neutron stars and black holes. The Einstein Probe (爱因斯坦探针) is a collaboration led by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) with the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE), Germany.

BEIJING, April 27 (Xinhua) --China's Einstein Probe (EP) astronomical satellite, sent into space in January this year, has captured its first in-orbit detection images, which were presented at a parallel forum of the 2024 Zhongguancun Forum in Beijing on Saturday.
Inspired by the functions of lobster eyes, EP uses new X-ray detection technology to observe mysterious transient phenomena in the universe that flicker like fireworks.
Yuan Weimin, principal investigator of the EP mission and a researcher at the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), said that since the probe's launch on Jan. 9 this year, commissioning tests have been conducted, confirming the functionality and performance of the EP satellite and its scientific instruments.
During its commissioning phase, EP has detected 17 X-ray transients and 127 stellar flares. These findings have guided a range of ground-based and space-based telescopes in follow-up observations in multiple wavebands, Yuan said.
Preliminary analysis of the data from EP and other telescopes has confirmed EP's potential to discover diverse X-ray sources and even new types of objects, and its important role in unveiling the evolution of the universe and the structure of spacetime, Yuan added.
"With great efforts, our team made this almost impossible mission possible," Yuan said.
Zhang Chen, assistant to EP's principal investigator, said that the probe has captured X-ray images of various celestial bodies during its commissioning phase. These observations have demonstrated the outstanding capabilities of EP's two scientific instruments: a Wide-field X-ray Telescope (WXT) to monitor a panorama of the X-ray sky, and a Follow-up X-ray Telescope (FXT) to provide close-up views and pinpoint transient sources captured by the WXT.
EP will continue its in-orbit calibration activities in the coming months, Zhang added.
The EP mission is one of a series of space science missions led by CAS. It is also an international collaboration mission with contributions from the European Space Agency (ESA), the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE) in Germany, and the French space agency CNES.
The mission aims to help scientists capture the first light of supernova explosions, search for and pinpoint X-ray signals accompanying gravitational wave events, and discover dormant black holes and other faint transient and variable celestial objects in the far reaches of the universe.

BEIJING, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- China's Einstein Probe (EP) astronomical satellite has, for the first time in human history, detected soft X-ray signals from an explosion in the early universe, opening a new window for research into the young cosmos.
The findings were published in the journal Nature Astronomy on Thursday.
The Wide-field X-ray Telescope onboard the EP satellite observed a faint pulse signal from a burst event in the soft X-ray band on March 15, 2024. This burst, designated as EP240315a, exhibited rapid brightness fluctuations and persisted for over 17 minutes before gradually fading away.
Subsequent observations by telescopes from other countries confirmed that this burst originated from the distant early universe.
At the time of this burst, the universe was only 10 percent of its current age, and its signal took 12.5 billion years to reach Earth. The discovery of EP240315a marks the first time that humanity has detected soft X-ray signals from an explosion in the early universe.
Scientists classify X-rays as "soft" or "hard" based on their energy level: soft X-rays have lower energy, while hard X-rays have higher energy.
This is just a beginning and the discovery showcased the remarkable potential of EP in detecting cosmic explosions from the early universe, said Yuan Weimin, principal investigator of the EP mission and a researcher at the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
The discovery of EP240315a also facilitated a collaboration between the EP team and Dr. Roberto Ricci from the University of Rome Tor Vergata in Italy.
He initiated long-term radio band monitoring of this gamma-ray burst (GRB). Using the Australia Telescope Compact Array, his three-month radio observations confirmed that EP240315a's energy output aligns with the characteristics of a GRB.
GRBs are among the most powerful explosive phenomena known in the universe, typically originating from the explosion of massive stars. Subsequent analysis revealed that EP240315a is associated with a GRB designated as GRB240315C.
"These results show that a substantial fraction of FXRTs (fast X-ray transients) may be associated with GRBs and that sensitive X-ray monitors, such as the EP, can pinpoint them in the distant universe, and combining the power of X-ray and radio observations hands us a new way to explore these ancient explosions even without detecting their gamma rays," said Dr. Roberto Ricci.
However, the mystery remains, as the GRB discovered by EP is particularly unique. Under normal circumstances, X-rays appear tens of seconds earlier than gamma rays, but in the case of EP240315a, the X-rays arrived more than six minutes earlier.
"Such a long delay has never been observed before," said Sun Hui, an associate researcher at the National Astronomical Observatories of CAS and one of the study's co-first authors.
Gao He, a co-corresponding author from Beijing Normal University, noted that this discovery offers a fresh perspective and could lead to a re-evaluation of existing GRB models.
