Ukrainian Company Explores Florida Launch, Manufacturing Base (Source: SPACErePORT)
A delegation of executives fro Ukraine's Yuzhnoye (builder of the Zenit and Cyclone launch vehicles) is exploring opportunities for basing a new launch vehicle program at the Cape Canaveral Spaceport. The Mayak family of rockets is based on the Zenit and Cyclone vehicles and could be considered Ukraine's answer to Russia's Angara modular family of vehicles (built by rival rocket maker Khrunichev).

The Mayak would feature light, medium and heavy lift versions (8 tons, 20 tons, and 42 tons to LEO, respectively) and would be capable of launching humans. Yuzhnoye appears to be partnered with Excalibur Almaz to carry its commercial space station hardware and astronaut personnel to orbit. In addition to launching Mayak rockets from Florida, the discussion is focusing on opportunities for manufacturing or assembly of the vehicles on the Space Coast. (5/27)

Dave Anderman posted a rather good shot of what has until now, been a mystery Almaz. The full image can be found here (http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=25550.0;attach=305834;image), but here for comparison is a cropped detail from it:

If you look at the attaching hardware on the side you'll see that it is identicle to the Almaz stations purchased by Excalibur Almaz;

This mystery Almaz is a 200 series, and the strongest indication yet that these would have been "man-tended" stations.

Best Regards,

David L. Rickman

NASA PR — NASA's Commercial Crew Program is entering into an unfunded Space Act Agreement with Excalibur Almaz, Incorporated (EAI) as part of the Commercial Crew Development Round 2 (CCDev2) activities.

The unfunded Space Act Agreement with EAI establishes a framework to enable NASA to collaborate with EAI in furthering the development EAI's spacecraft concept for low Earth orbit crew transportation. EAI's concept for commercial crew to the International Space Station is to use the company's planned tourist space vehicle in concert with an intermediate stage and fly the integrated vehicle on a commercially available launch vehicle to be determined in the near future.

"We are pleased to add Excalibur Almaz to the group of CCDev2 companies and look forward to a productive partnership," said Brent Jett, Commercial Crew Program deputy manager...
ExcaliburAlmaz Limited.

The nearly complete station Excalibur Almaz purchased is neither OPS-5 or OPS-6. It was to have been an unmanned Almaz satellite.

Thank you, Anatoly. This is very useful information.

According to Polychenko OPS-5 would have been №0105. We know that Almaz T was №0303. So does anyone know what №0205 and №0206 represent? All visual indications are that №0205 would have been unmanned. But these are curious model numbers. Could these represent man tended stations (automated stations visited by cosmonauts only for repairs and resupply)?

Best Always,

David L. Rickman

HOUSTON — Excalibur Almaz, Inc., a Houston-headquartered space tourism company distinguished by its plans to use refurbished Soviet-era military space station hardware for adventure travel and commercial research, has become the seventh participant in the second round of NASA's Commercial Crew Development (CCDev) initiative.

EAI joins the NASA-fostered effort to develop U.S. commercial spacecraft capable of carrying astronauts to and from the International Space Station under an unfunded Space Act Agreement. The agreement will permit NASA participation in a series of systems requirements, launch vehicle, test plan, design compatibility, test and operational systems reviews through May 2012, according to NASA.

Earlier this year, the six-year-old company unveiled its unique hardware at its facilities on the Isle of Man, including a pair of Almaz military space stations and four three-person Reusable Re-entry Vehicles. The equipment was developed by the Soviets as military versions of the Salyut series of space stations. Seven Salyut and Almaz versions were launched between 1971 and 1982 (Aerospace DAILY, June 21).

The company plans an unmanned flight test of a refurbished and upgraded RRV as soon as 2014, with manned orbital flights of an RRV with an expendable habitable service module to follow soon after.

The launch of a commercial Almaz station would depend on the demand for orbital missions.

EAI brings flight-tested vintage RRV hardware to the CCDev competition, including a crew escape system and the capability to touch down on land as well as water. The company is assessing commercial launch vehicle options, according to NASA.

In April, NASA awarded a total of $270 million to Blue Origin, Boeing, Sierra Nevada and SpaceX for further development of commercial crew space transportation services that could be operational in the 2015-16 time frame. United Launch Alliance and Alliant Techsystems are participating as unfunded participants.

Excalibur Almaz is looking beyond sending its Soviet-era space vehicles and stations into Earth orbit and is actively working on human missions to the moon, asteroids and lagrange points.

Excalibur Almaz CEO Art Dula outlined the company's plans on Sunday during the International Space Development Conference in Washington. Based upon Twitter posts by attendees, here are the highlights:

The company has four reusable capsules (with four seats) and two space station pressure vessels that it is upgrading with modern technology
Planned services include crew and cargo transportation from Earth to LEO, lunar orbits and lagrange point 2 (L2)
EA is working with: MDA and Ad Astra (VASIMR engine) on asteroid rendezvous scenarios; ULA (launchers); Astrium (ATV-based propulsion system); NASA (Space Act Agreement on commercial crew); and Futron (marketing studies)
Company appears to be no longer interested in providing commercial crew services to ISS
Possible launch vehicles include Atlas V, Falcon 9 and Zenit
EA had looked at buying Sea Launch (Zenit boosters) a while back (Sea Launch is now 95 percent owned by Energia)
Based on Futron studies, total 2013-2023 market demand is 29 lunar passengers paying $100 million apiece
Key flight element (manned spacecraft) has been flight tested with re-entries (albeit without people on board)
EA will discuss its business plan and display a twice-flown re-eentry capsule during a Royal Aeronautical Society space tourism meeting in London on June 19
EA will display cis-lunar spacecraft during a space conference on the Isle of Man in July
Dula has spent as much time on U.S. ITAR (export control) issues as he has on engineering (American company using Russian technology now based on the Isle of Man).
