Смотрел только что новости по первому каналу: У РН Арес-1 найден какой-то деффект. При первых минутах полета ракета (или корабль) разойдется по швам. Поподробнее кто нибудь слышал?
Это акустические, динамические нагрузки? В чем собственно конкретная проблема?

Тоже мне, новость! На форуме уж сколько обсуждалось. Из-за большого удлинения у Арес-1 есть проблемы с нагрузками (ветровыми и прочими), которые вызывают значительный изгибающий момент, максимум которого приходится гдн-то на межступенчатый переходник. Решается эта проблема простым упрочнением конструкции этого переходника и примыкающих отсеков.

Нет, проблема в другом и очень серьезная:

"The shaking problem, which is common to solid rocket boosters, involves pulses of added acceleration caused by gas vortices in the rocket similar to the wake that develops behind a fast-moving boat, said Arenas, who has researched vibration and space-launch issues.

Those vortices happen to match the natural vibrating frequencies of the motor's combustion chamber, and the combination causes the shaking.

Senior managers were told of the findings last fall, but NASA did not talk about them publicly until the AP filed a Freedom of Information Act request earlier this month and the watchdog Web site Nasawatch.com submitted detailed engineering-oriented questions.

The response to those questions, given to both Nasawatch and AP, were shared with outside experts, who judged it a serious problem.

NASA engineers characterized the shaking as being in what the agency considers the ''red zone'' of risk, ranking a five on a 1-to-5 scale of severity.

"It's highly likely to happen and if it does, it's a disaster,'' said Fischbeck, an expert in engineering risks."

NASA Administrator Mike Griffin, in an interview with CBS News today, said he remains optimistic the agency can complete the international space station and retire the shuttle as planned by the end of fiscal 2010 despite recent delays to recover from hail damage and problems with critical fuel sensors.

Griffin also said recent questions about high vibration levels in the Ares 1 rocket NASA is building to carry astronauts into low-Earth orbit for eventual flights to the moon will be successfully resolved, saying claims to the contrary are unfounded.

NASA Faces Mounting Criticism For Ares Program

This article is why the Jupiter-120 is the best way for NASA's and Congress to defend the STS derived approach as directed in the VSE authorization. The Jupiter-120 has volume and lift capabilities right out of the gates that even EELV derivatives can't touch. Right now the Ares-I is below the capabilities of current EELV by every measure making for an indefensible position even if the Ares-I engineering was solid.

Hopefully enough people at the upper levels of NASA will begin to realize that it is in their best interest to move to this more STS derivative defensible position of the Jupiter-120. If not, while manned space flight will continue it won't be run by NASA after the Space Shuttle is retired.

I sense that this is real reason the EELV guys don't like the Jupiter-120. They know it represents the best way of keeping NASA in driver's seat.

На фотографии, откуда был взят слезающий астронавт, он и посадочная ступень (т. е. та, в которой посадочный двигатель, исключая взлётную ступень) примерно одной высоты. А тут - раз в пять больше. А остальные пропорции - те же, так что если вспомнить про закон квадрато-куба...
