Version 1.44.1 dated July 26, 2008. Author – Maxim Sychev (Rostov-on-Don)

Screensaver had been developed following open competition between potential authors. It is designed for freeware distribution as part of an effort to promote achievements of the Russian space industry and, in particular, "Buran" reusable orbital ship.

At your screen you will see a fascinatingly realistic picture of near-Earth space, as well as several space ships, created or envisaged by the extra-talented Russian people:
-   first human-built Earth satellite "Sputnik", launched in USSR on October 4, 1957;
-   "working horse" of the Soviet and Russian human space industry – space ship "Soyuz";
-   the most sophisticated space ship ever built in this country – reusable orbital space ship "Buran", which made its first and only flight on November 15, 1988;
-   demonstration mock-up of the military orbital laser station "Polyus" ("Pole"), which suffered a failure during its launch on May 15, 1987;
-   the most secret space object in the history of our space industry – military space laser station "Skif" ("Scythian"), including detailed description of all stages of its warlike operations;
-   orbital plane of the Multipurpose Avia-Space System (MAKS), which is being developed by NPO "Molniya" from 1988;
-   orbital technological complex for industrial production of semiconductors in space, which was developed as part of MAKS initiative;
-   our most lengthy and most successful space construction project – modular space station "Mir".

If you choose "Sputnik" you would be able to hear its voice – famous "bip-bip-bip", which started the space era for the mankind some 50 years ago.

Space ship "Soyuz" ("Union") is presented in its most recent modification ("Soyuz-TMA"). All elements of the last orbit insertion flight phase are presented, including operation of third stage of the launch vehicle; separation of the tail section of the rocket; main engine cut-off (отсечку маршевого двигателя); stabilization and separation of the craft followed by the debris avoidance engine impulse and opening of all antennas and solar panels. Then you would be able to take manual control of the ship, trying to achieve 3-axis orientation. As soon as you feel bored with that, in 30 seconds the ship will take an automated control over orientation process and will achieve best position for solar arrays charging. It will then keep constant Sun-oriented position.  You would be able to see the burning of the rocket third stage tail end in the atmosphere, and with the help of the special switch you would be able to track the third stage until complete burning at its seventh orbit around Earth. And that is not all – you would be able to hear actual crew communication!

"Buran" ("Snow-storm") is not only shown in space flight (in its nominal orientation – left wing to Earth), but you would be able to operate ship's equipment: open and close payload bay doors and even launch a satellite from "Buran" and then catch it with remote manipulator and deliver it back to the payload bay!

If you select "Polyus" ("Pole") you would be able to see an unsuccessful attempt to launch a heavy demonstration mock-up of the first-in-its-kind military laser station. On your screen action will start from the successful firing of the last stage of the launch vehicle "Energiya" ("Energy") and "Polyus" fairing separation in accordance with the flight plan. After second stage main engines cut-off with the help of 16 solid-fuel engines firing "Polyus" will separate from the launch vehicle and through multiple firing of its liquid-propellant engines will start orienting the station to re ready for the two impulse firing of the main engine required to achieve its operational orbit. You will see how the station would have two firings of 4 orientation engines, but due to the defect in the software would fail to achieve proper orientation. Space craft would successfully deploy all antennas and solar panels and would jettison all engines and umbilical covers. Unfortunately, orbit-insertion impulse at the revolving ship will fail to provide necessary orbital speed and the result of hard work of thousands of people will follow the third stage of the launch vehicle into Pacific Ocean. For the first time you would be able to follow this tragedy in space through multiple cameras observing both "Polyus" and last stage of the launch vehicle.

The combat space laser station "Skif" ("Scythian") was reconstructed in the design it should have under Soviet counter-plans against US Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) oriented on establishment of heavy combat orbital stations. We would show to you all stages of "Skif" operations – from orbital insertion till effective destruction of enemies' satellites. You would be able to shift from one camera to another to follow not only "Skif" station and last stage of the launch vehicle but also the last minutes of enemy satellites. Constantly changing its orientation, "Skif" will fire not only "forward" (against oncoming satellites), but also "backwards" towards satellites moving away from the station. After each round of firing the "Skif" is resupplied through "Progress" cargo ships followed by another round of laser testing. For better understanding of the activities at the screen each operation is supported by a small on-screen commentary.
When you watch "Skif" operations, please remember – it is neither a fantasy nor a mystification and by no means a stupid thinking of some militaristic crazy person. This is a real military system which was under development in the USSR in the  80ies.  Mankind was not only one step away from uncontrolled militarization of space with unpredictable consequences, but the global (Earth and Space) Apocalypses was even closer then you think... We had courage at that time to step away from this "road to nowhere" – it is important not to return to this path again! This is particularly relevant to US, rather then to Russian activities. So when you watch "Skif" please remember how able we are in case of the need to answer the most difficult challenges faced by our country...

MAKS would demonstrate the last stages of orbit insertion by the orbital plane: 3-components main engines will fire with flare's (факел) color changing from deep yellow (огненно-желтый) with kerosene-oxygen firing to bright blue with hydrogen-oxygen combination. After stabilization of the plane-tank stack through firing of the orbital control engines, orbital plane will separate from the empty tank. Orbital control jets will fire again twice to achieve proper orientation of the ship required for the two impulse firing required to achieve nominal orbit which would be done through consecutive firing of the orbital maneuvering engines. Their first firing will take place in several minutes after separation from the tank followed by the second firing in half orbit time. And you would be able to see how the empty tank burn in the atmosphere in the exactly opposite place to the start point around the Earth! After achieving nominal orbit the orbital control jets on the plane will fire for proper orientation of the ship, followed by transforming the wing consoles to orbital configuration and opening of the payload bay doors. Real sounds of all those operations would be an extra bonus for a viewer!

Orbital plant will show you all phases of industrial production in space. Initially you would be able to see the last phases of its construction at orbit. Then several ships would be docked to it: "Soyuz" will bring the first crew of space workers to set up the equipment and orbital plane MAKS will ship two transport containers with raw materials for future semiconductors. After set up and checks of station equipment, ships will undock and the plant  will start its operations. As soon as the materials are used and final products are produced new ships will come to ferry the new raw materials and bring back to ground plates with semiconductors on them. Visiting expeditions will periodically provide required maintenance for the station's equipment. We tried to make the station as realistic as possible with gravitational stabilization and flexible (подвижную) orientation of the solar panels. You would be able to shift between various camera modes, including the option of looking at the station through the visors of the docking ships – your chance to look at the station look from a real crew member's perspective!

Orbital station "Mir" (can mean both "World" and "Peace") is shown during construction phase, i.e. between April 1987 and March 23, 2001 when it was de-orbited. We'll start from the initial configuration of base module and astrophysical module "Kvant" ("Quantum"), with the follow-on docking of orbital modules "Kvant-2", "Kristall" ("Crystal"), "Spektr" ("Spectrum") and "Priroda" ("Nature"). You would be able to see something which nobody was able to see before – redocking of modules from the axial module to the side modules using station's manipulators (we have modeled redocking of all modules). "Soyuz" piloted ships and "Progress" cargo ships will constantly dock and undock to/from the station. If necessary, "Soyuz" ships will redock from one docking port to another, and you would be able to see the redocking from the working place of "Soyuz" commander. "Mir" construction was impossible without crew participation so you would be able to see five (!) EVAs:
-   during first EVA cosmonauts will attach two cargo booms to the exterior of the station, which would then be used to transport modules and booms themselves around the station;
-   two trusses "Rapan" ("Rapana venosa") and "Sophora" ("Sophora") would be attached to the "Kvant" module during the second EVA. At the end of "Sophora" (length 14.5 m) the set of orientation control engines would be set up responsible for station's banking (крен) control;
-    during third EVA the reusable solar panel (MSB-IV) would be transferred from "Kristall" module to "Kvant";
-   improved solar panel with enhanced performance characteristics would be installed at "Kvant" during EVA # 4;
-   cosmonauts will monitor unfolding of antenna at "Priroda" module during the fifth EVA.

Screensaver will demonstrate the interesting experiment "Rodeo" related to joint maneuvering of "Soyuz" ships around "Mir", including the docking of "Soyuz-Escape vehicle" to "Kristall" module.
The historical truth in the "Mir" operations was violated only once: prior to attachment of "Priroda" module to "Mir" (from the side of "Kristall" module) American shuttle was actually docked to "Mir", and in the screensaver it had been replaced by "Buran", as initially planned by "Mir" designers.
For your convenience you may not only jump ahead in the construction process to the point you are mostly interested in, but also switch between various cameras and actually stop construction at any moment.

Minimum system requirements to start the screensaver:
-   processor Intel Pentium 1000 MHz;
-   32 Mb Video Card with OpenGL support;
-   256 Mb RAM;
-   Operating system Windows 98/Me/2000/XP (screensaver was not tested for compatibility with Vista operating system).

You may download the installation file (25,36 Mb) from here, pressing the button:

After the start of the installation program it would be installed at your computer (72,96 Mb of disk space is required for installation) at the C:\Program Files\BuranScreenSaver directory.

Poekhali! (Let's Go)!

Selection between the space ships, as well as all other set up configuration for the screensaver is performed from the Start menu or through random choice – all you need is to put appropriate flags at proper places:

When screensaver is installed you would be able to see majestic views of our home planet from space – dawns and sunsets, continents and blue oceans, lighted by the Sun, or cities-by-night, sleeping under illusory Moon light (see the screenshot to the right which would open when clicked). You don't have to pay $25 mln. to go to space, then wait for your turn and then go through exhaustive training – all you need is to download our screensaver!

Flight control (as well as time and camera operations) are performed through keyboard and mouse, the list of available commands and their brief annotation is available by pressing F1 button.

There is a special mode which will allow to fix the camera above any selected Earth point, allowing you to monitor our planer, rather then space vehicles.

Normal screensaver operations (with smooth movements) is possible only with the presentation speed of at least 15 shots (кадров) per second.  If this option is set at lower level (which is possible for computers with less powerful video card leading to picture  jerks (рывок)) then the situation could be improved through shutting off some of the visual effects while starting the screensaver. For example, shadows at the space ships could be switched off or simplified, as well as clear-cut (рельефных) surfaces. Textures of lower size could also be used. If this does not help, then the general presentation could be simplified through sequential switching off of sun light (блик) at the oceans, atmosphere haze, cloud shadows, sun light (блик) at the space vehicles, direct sun light (засветка), night lights of the cities and mutual reflections of space objects. All that will free up about 33% of computer memory during the start of screensaver with the certain decrease of picture quality. You can also switch off other satellites (there are dozens of them in the screensaver). This will lead to a less realistic presentation, though overall quality will not decrease much.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Update: after "default" installation the earth surface is presented through three groups of textures (daylight, night and cloudy, 16 graphical files each) with 1024х1024 resolution assuming 10 km/pixel at the equator. You may significantly improve the picture of earth surface and clouds, if you download patches with 2048х2048 resolution textures. But please remember – more detailed textures have larger size which will lead to the certain decrease in the picture speed. Standard video cards  could support one texture with up to 2048х2048 resolution, though more advanced and powerful cards could support even larger textures – with resolution  up to 4096х4096 pixels.

Therefore if you would like to improve the picture quality and screensaver's realism you must download the patches below with more detailed textures. Each match will install the new texture to the right place during the installation process – you just need to identify the directory where the screensaver was originally installed (this is required only if the screensaver was installed to the directory different from default). We can provide 6 patches with improved textures:

Patch number (file name) Size Texture Resolution at the equator

1. BuranScrPatch_Earth2048.exe 13,75 МБ    daylight surface 16 х 2048 х 2048 4,88 km/pixel
2. BuranScrPatch_Clouds2048.exe 24,65 МБ    cloudy weather                 16 х 2048 х 2048 4,88 km/pixel
3. BuranScrPatch_City2048.exe 609 КБ    cities by night           16 х 2048 х 2048 4,88 km/pixel
4. BuranScrPatch_Earth4096.exe 43,05 МБ    daylight surface 16 х 4096 х 4096 2,44 km/pixel
5. BuranScrPatch_Clouds4096.exe 102,46 МБ    cloudy weather                 16 х 4096 х 4096 2,44 km/pixel
6. BuranScrPatch_City4096.exe 1,44 МБ    cities by night           16 х 4096 х 4096 2,44 km/pixel

Download, install and choose what you want (taking into account what picture your computer would be able to support)!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All versions from v1.10 dated October 14, 2007 allow to play at the start of the screensaver one file in mp3 format, which is not included in the installation program. You may copy any file of your choice to the directory C:\Program Files\BuranScreenSaver, the file must be renamed to 1.mp3. We may select three version of this file for the screensaver start up:
-   parts of the Russia-USSR national anthem (by Ensemble of Soviet Army named under Alexandrov, conductor – Vyacheslav Korobko, recording of 2004, 1.24 min, bitrate 320 kbit/sec, 3.21 Мб);
-   slightly "milder" piece of music from soviet film "Neulovimuye mstiteli" ("Avengers who can't be caught")  (music by Boris Mokrousov, lyrics by Robert Rozdestventsky, performed by Troshin, 1.34 minutes, bitrate 320 kbit/sec, 3.7 Мб);
-   part of the Russian anthem "Bozhe, tsarya khrani" ("God Save the King") (performed by the St. Petersburgh Navy Orchestra under A.Karabanov, recording of 2005,  1.29 min, bitrate 320 kbit/sec, 3.42 Мб)

You will see that we have tried to satisfy the tastes of all types of potential audience.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At the beginning of June, 2007 in Vienna, Austria, special 50th congress of the United Nations Committee of Peaceful Use of Space was opened. Please see how part of the Russian exhibition looked like, in particular the Roskosmos exhibition:

You will see that our  screensaver was right in the heart of the exposition of the Russian Federal Space Agency.

For VIP guests Roskosmos issued a limited edition of the screensaver on the miniCD:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Webmaster would like to express his gratitude to the following people who contributed to the development of the screensaver:

в понедельник на работе поспрашиваю тех для кого английский является родным, надеюсь помогут сделать текст читабельным, unfortunately my English is not perfect yet...

ps.
;)

pps.

Snowstorm

:wink:
Blue Marble, http://visibleearth.nasa.gov/view_rec.php?id=2430
