High School Students Build Lockers for Trip to the International Space Station

Pulling that final zipper closed on a stuffed suitcase or getting the tailgate of a packed car shut is a true feeling of victory at the start of any road trip. Sending supplies to the International Space Station—including on NASA's SpaceX Demo-2 test flight that launched the first astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley on SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule May 30 from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida—requires a different packing method and special lockers to transport supplies.

Four such lockers launched on Demo-2 were built by students from around the country through a program called NASA HUNCH—High school students United with NASA to Create Hardware. HUNCH's goal is to empower and inspire students through a project-based learning program and by providing opportunities to students to play an active role in the space program.

One student-built locker also will return to Earth from the space station at the end of the mission. The lockers contain important supplies for space station maintenance and daily operations.

"It is exciting for us and the students," said Bob Zeek, NASA HUNCH co-founder and project resource manager at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. "Even with 70 HUNCH-built lockers delivered to the International Space Station Program and 58 of those flying to the space station, the Demo-2 flight adds a new flavor."

Each locker is comprised of approximately 280 components, including 41 parts machined by the students and more than 200 rivets, fasteners and bearings. The pieces are manufactured with high precision to the tight tolerances required of any piece of hardware making the journey to the orbiting laboratory.

Schools in all four time zones across the United States contributed to the creation of the lockers, including schools that regionally supported the Johnson Space Center, Glenn Research Center, Kennedy Space Center, Marshall Space Flight Center and Langley Research Center. For example, students from Grissom High School in Huntsville, Alabama, created the rear close-out plates, while the integration of the lockers was done at Clear Creek High School in League City, Texas.

Industrial Machining Specialists—a commercial firm and a NASA HUNCH partner located near the Career Academies of Decatur—helps manufacture parts for SpaceX employing HUNCH graduates.

Launched in the four lockers stowed beneath the seats of astronauts Hurley and Behnken were:
  • Liquid cooling ventilation garments used by astronauts to help maintain proper body temperature during spacewalks.
  • Glenn Harnesses, which are used to ensure astronauts can properly run on the space station's treadmill. Exercise helps to keep the crew's bones and muscles strong during their time in space.
  • Shoes and other miscellaneous items.

Each student and instructor signs the lockers they helped build and when the units are in orbit, the astronauts take pictures with the lockers, providing the builders a memento of their efforts.

HUNCH is an important asset for the International Space Station program, and the demand for the lockers the program creates is only increasing.

"We are contracted to deliver 40 or more lockers per year, and that is up from 20 required before the Commercial Crew Program and other resupply vehicles came online," Zeek said.

Despite the coronavirus pandemic, which forced schools to finish their academic year virtually, Zeek and fellow Marshall HUNCH mentor, Bill Gibson, were allowed to complete locker production to meet the flight deadline. They used the fabrication facility set up at the Career Academies of Decatur.

"We picked up where the students left off," Zeek said.

HUNCH started in 2003 with two schools in Alabama and one in Texas. Now, 277 schools in 44 states participate in six focus areas: design and prototyping, software, hardware, sewn flight articles, video and media and culinary arts. The program has produced more than 1,500 items for flight or training for the space station program, representing approximately 20,000 individual flight parts, with nearly 1,300 parts flown to the space station or delivered for flight.

Москва. 12 июня. INTERFAX.RU - Американские астронавты Крис Кэссиди и бортинженер Боб Бенкен готовятся к предстоящим двум выходам в открытый космос с борта Международной космической станции (МКС) для продолжения работ по модернизации ее энергетической системы, сообщило НАСА.

Астронавты выйдут за борт МКС 26 июня и 1 июля, чтобы заменить очередную группу устаревших никель-водородных аккумуляторов, которые накапливают и распределяют энергию, собранную от солнечных батарей, на новые более мощные литий-ионные.

Нынешний командир МКС Кэссиди и бортинженер Бенкен, прибывший на станцию в конце мая на новом американском пилотируемом корабле Crew Dragon компании SpaceX, уже провели подгонку скафандров.

Работы будут проводиться на опорном сегменте S6 фермы МКС, к которой крепятся солнечные панели. Замена батарей на правой стороне фермы станции началась еще в прошлом году и была продолжена в январе.

В целом обновление системы энергоснабжения станции началось еще в январе 2017 года. Сложные ремонтные работы проводились как по правому, так и по левому борту ферменной конструкции станции.

Новые аккумуляторы были доставлены на МКС в мае японским грузовым кораблем HTV.

Electrolysis Measurement (EM):

In support of the ongoing EM experiment, the crew performed a series of sample exchanges. The experiment is expected to process 30 total samples over the next several weeks. Electrolytic Gas Evolution Under Microgravity (Electrolysis Measurement) examines the influence of gravity on electrolytic gas evolution, a complex electrochemical process with multiple applications on Earth and in space. For example, electrolysis generates bubbles that can be used to create pressure differentials in microfluidic devices, such as skin patches, used to deliver medications. Microgravity makes it possible to single out bubble growth and study its effect on the process.

Manufacturing Device (ManD):

Due to issues with sensors in the existing ManD unit, it was exchanged with a replacement unit. The ground team will need to load updated software and perform checkouts before the unit is ready to print.  The Additive Manufacturing Facility (AMF, aka ManD) enables the production of components on the International Space Station (ISS) for both NASA and commercial objectives. Parts, entire experiments, and tools can be created on demand utilizing the AMF that is installed into an Express Rack locker location. The AMF is capable of producing parts out of a wide variety of thermopolymers including engineered plastics.

Spectrum Setup:

The crew configured the Spectrum unit, and installed it in EXPRESS rack 6. The functional checkout will occur tomorrow (Friday). Spectrum takes fluorescent images of biological specimens contained within a controlled environment. A high resolution, monochrome camera captures images of fluoresced proteins of plants within Petri plates. Ground crews control the growth lighting, CO2 levels, and ethylene levels within the Spectrum's research chamber over a typical 12-day growth period while routinely capturing images and telemetering these images back to Earth.

Treadmill (T2) Maintenance:

Today the crew performed the remaining closeout steps for T2 maintenance. Upon completion, the crew performed the unmanned activation and checkout (ACO) successfully. However, during the manned ACO, the treadmill did not rotate and the T2 120V primary power LED light was off. Crew was requested to stand down from the unmanned ACO. No further troubleshooting was requested of the crew today as the ground team determines a forward plan. At this time, T2 is still non-operational.

Extravehicular Activity (EVA) Preparations:

Today, the ISS crew continued preparation activities for the upcoming S6 Battery EVAs. The crew completed an EMU resizing activity that set-up EMU suits 3004 and 3006 for Chris Cassidy and Doug Hurley. The crew also initiated charge operations on the EMU Long Life Batteries (LLB) and continued charging cycles on the Battery Stowage Assembly (BSA).

Split Atmosphere Operations:

Today the ventilation between the Russian and US segments was split to further troubleshoot the source of benzene onboard the ISS. The USOS and RS crew each performed steps to redirect air flow within their segments. The Air Quality Monitor (AQM), previously transferred to the Service Module (SM) this week, acquired additional readings throughout the day. Following the data collection, the crew performed steps to recombine atmospheres. The ground team will utilize the readings from today to develop a forward plan to pinpoint the benzene source.

В мае в "Роскосмосе" сообщили РИА Новости об увеличении концентрации бензола в атмосфере МКС, не превышающей предельно допустимую норму и не угрожающей экипажу.

В четверг НАСА сообщило, что измерения уровня бензола проводятся в российском модуле "Звезда" с помощью американского прибора для определения качества воздуха AQM. Позже в "Роскосмосе" подтвердили РИА Новости факт измерений, добавив, что они осуществляются во всех модулях станции, а их результаты анализируются специалистами на Земле для выработки дальнейших рекомендаций.

"Воздухообмен между российским и американским сегментами был прекращен для поиска источника бензола на МКС. Американские и российские члены экипажа выполнили шаги по перенаправлению воздуха в своих сегментах", - говорится в сообщении на сайте НАСА.

Отмечается, что после этого с помощью прибора AQM был измерен уровень бензола в модуле "Звезда", и воздухообмен между сегментами был восстановлен.

Бензол является бесцветной жидкостью со специфическим сладковатым запахом. Входит в состав бензина и используется для производства лекарств, пластмасс, синтетической резины и красителей. Токсичен и канцерогенен.

NASA astronauts Chris Cassidy and Robert Behnken are scheduled to go outside the International Space Station (ISS) Friday, June 26, and Wednesday, July 1, for spacewalks to begin the replacement of batteries for one of the power channels on the orbiting laboratory.

NASA Television and the agency's website will broadcast the spacewalks live, along with a news briefing to discuss them.

The briefing will take place at 2 p.m. EDT Wednesday, June 24, at the agency's Johnson Space Center in Houston. Coverage of the spacewalks will begin at 6 a.m. on the day of each spacewalk. The spacewalks will begin at around 7:35 a.m., and will last as long as seven hours.

This will be a virtual event with no media present because of safety restrictions related to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. ...

Cassidy, the commander of Expedition 63, and Behnken, who joined the crew May 31 after arriving aboard SpaceX's Crew Dragon with NASA astronaut Douglas Hurley on NASA's SpaceX Demo-2 test flight, will depart the Quest airlock for both spacewalks. The briefing also will include an update about the Crew Dragon's mission to the orbital outpost.

The briefing participants are:
  • Kenneth Todd, ISS manager for integration and operations
  • Steve Stich, Commercial Crew Program manager
  • Allison Bolinger, ISS spacewalk flight director
  • Sandra Moore, ISS spacewalk officer

The spacewalking astronauts will replace aging nickel-hydrogen batteries for one of two power channels on the far starboard truss (S6 Truss) of the station with new lithium-ion batteries that arrived to the station on a Japanese cargo ship last month. The battery replacement work is the culmination of power upgrade spacewalks that began in January 2017.

Cassidy will be extravehicular crew member 1 for both spacewalks, wearing the spacesuit with red stripes, while Behnken will be extravehicular crew member 2, wearing the spacesuit with no stripes. It will be the seventh and eighth spacewalks for each astronaut. The spacewalks will be the 228th and 229th in support of space station assembly, maintenance and upgrades.

For almost 20 years, humans have lived and worked continuously aboard the International Space Station, advancing scientific knowledge and demonstrating new technologies, making research breakthroughs not possible on Earth that will enable long-duration human and robotic exploration into deep space. As a global endeavor, 239 people from 19 countries have visited the unique microgravity laboratory that has hosted more than 2,800 research investigations from researchers in 108 countries and areas.

The Expedition 63 crew is starting the week getting ready for a pair of upcoming spacewalks and a satellite deployment. The International Space Station residents are also setting up research gear that will analyze hazardous particles and plasma crystals.

The three NASA astronauts onboard the station teamed up today setting up hardware and reviewing plans for two spacewalks planned to start at the end of the month. Commander Chris Cassidy and Flight Engineer Bob Behnken checked out rechargeable batteries that will power up U.S. spacesuit components. Flight Engineer Doug Hurley looked at procedures to put on the spacesuits as well as steps a spacewalker would take during an emergency.

The spacewalks will continue power upgrades begun last year on the outside of the space station. Cassidy and Behnken will replace old nickel-hydrogen batteries with new lithium-ion batteries on the Starboard-6 truss segment. The batteries store and distribute power collected from the solar arrays throughout the station.

Cassidy started Monday in Japan's Kibo laboratory module readying a 110-kilogram Red-Eye satellite for deployment in the next couple of weeks. He installed the satellite inside Kibo's airlock where it will be placed into the vacuum of space and ejected into orbit from the  NanoRacks Kaber Microsat deployer. Red-Eye, the second of three microsatellites, will test satellite communications, flight computers and thermal management technologies.

Behnken helped out with the Red-Eye work before installing the new Mochii microscope in the Kibo lab where it will analyze particles that could threaten crew health and spacecraft safety. Hurley worked in the European Columbus laboratory module making room for the new European Drawer Rack-2 that will support a variety of new space experiments.

The two cosmonauts in the Russian segment of the station kept up their schedule of microgravity research and life support operations. Veteran Flight Engineer Anatoly Ivanishin serviced hardware that observes plasma crystals which could lead to improved research methods and new spacecraft designs. First time space-flyer Ivan Vagner checked space radiation readings and set up Earth observation hardware.

На сайте агентства говорится, что спутник запустят с помощью канадского манипулятора SSRMS, перед этим выведя его наружу станции из японского модуля Kibo.

Red-Eye-2 массой 110 килограммов был доставлен на МКС американским грузовым кораблем Cygnus в феврале 2020 года. В интересах DARPA он будет тестировать спутниковую связь, бортовые компьютеры и технологии управления тепловым режимом.

Это второй из трех спутников Red-Eye, первый был запущен в июне 2019 года.

The crew installed the RED-EYE 2 satellite onto the Japanese Module (JEM) KABER deployer system on the JEM Airlock slide table. The crew also replaced the old capture mechanism with a new unit and took the multilayer insulation (MLI) from the old unit and installed it onto the new capture mechanism unit. The RED-EYE program develops and demonstrates technologies which increase the utility of low-cost microsatellites using the Kaber Micro Satellite Deployer attached to the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator (SPDM).

The crew attempted to install the Mochii Microscope. The crew was not able to successfully power on the unit and the installation was aborted. The ground teams will assess configuration photos and will provide future trouble shooting steps. Mochii is a miniature scanning electron microscope (SEM) with spectroscopy to conduct real-time, on-site imaging and compositional measurements of particles on the International Space Station (ISS). Such particles can cause vehicle and equipment malfunctions and threaten crew health, but currently, samples must be returned to Earth for analysis, leaving crew and vehicle at risk. Mochii also provides a powerful new analysis platform to support novel microgravity science and engineering.

Two new payload racks, Express Rack-11B (ER11B) and the European Drawer Rack 2 (EDR2), were delivered on H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV)9. Today, the crew staged the Columbus module in preparation for the transfer of the new racks from HTV9. Preparations included relocating cargo from the Columbus module, emptying out and deinstalling the European Transport Carrier (ETC) locker, and clearing out payload cargo from the Columbus Overhead 2 (COL1O2) rack. The two racks will be transferred from HTV9 tomorrow and the ETC will be transferred to HTV9 for disposal.

Potable Water Dispenser (PWD) Sample Collection:

Crew collected water samples from the Potable Water Dispenser (PWD) to perform a Total Organic Carbon Analyzer (TOCA) analysis that measures the amount of organic constituents in the potable water. The crew also tested the water samples for the presence of Coliform bacteria utilizing a Coliform test bag. The ground team encountered issues today with the Nitrogen/Oxygen Recharge System (NORS) tanks which resulted in a delay in the TOCA analysis. The crew will reconvene in the morning with steps to complete the TOCA sample analysis and also perform a waste water bag (WWB) changeout.

In preparation for the S6 Battery EVA currently planned for Friday, June 26th, the crew completed the following:
  • EMU Rechargeable EVA Battery Assembly (REBA) install and checkout on both suits (3004/3006).
  • EVA suit intravehicular (IV) Review: The IV crew reviewed reminders, emergency briefing, helpful tips and procedures used during EVA prep.
  • Termination of the second set of Battery Stowage Assembly (BSA) battery maintenance.

Today the crew performed an auditory test as a baseline for future exams conducted periodically during their stay on the ISS. The assessment measures hearing function while crewmembers are exposed to noise and microgravity during long-duration spaceflight. The exam is performed in conjunction with the crew-worn acoustic monitor surveys.

Today the crew completed a periodic health evaluation. During the evaluation, vital signs are obtained and an ear examination is conducted by taking images of the tympanic membranes and the external ear. The data and imagery is then downlinked for review by a medical specialist.

Tuesday's science aboard the International Space Station encompassed life science, fluids and flames to help humans on Earth and in space. The Expedition 63 crew also configured spacewalk tools and opened up an expandable module.

Commander Chris Cassidy of NASA collected and stowed his blood and urine samples today for later analysis. He also set up an experiment that observes how fluids flow in micrometer-sized tubes to improve medical diagnostic devices on Earth and in spaceships.

Cassidy also joined NASA Flight Engineer Bob Behnken organizing and inspecting a variety of gear ahead of two spacewalks planned for June 26 and July 1. The duo will be swapping old nickel-hydrogen batteries with new lithium-ion batteries on the Starboard-6 truss structure to upgrade the station's power systems.

Behnken opened up and entered BEAM, the Bigelow Expandable Activity Module, to retrieve life support equipment during the afternoon. He also partnered up with fellow Flight Engineer Doug Hurley unpacking new science equipment from Japan's H-II Transfer Vehicle-9 (HTV-9) resupply ship and installing it in Europe's Columbus laboratory module.

Veteran cosmonaut Anatoly Ivanishin continued to service the Combustion Integrated Rack replacing fuel bottles to maintain safe fuel and flame research in the device. Insights could improve fire safety as well as combustion processes for Earth and space industries. His Russian colleague Ivan Vagner worked on a pair of Earth observation studies monitoring the effects of catastrophes and the development of forests.

Kathy Lueders, NASA's associate administrator for Human Exploration and Operations, has named Joel Montalbano as acting manager of the International Space Station Program. The appointment is effective Friday, June 26, the date Kirk Shireman, who has been in the position since 2015, is retiring from the agency to take a position in private industry.

"Kirk has dedicated 35 years of his career advancing and improving human spaceflight, and doing it in a collaborative way," said Lueders. "The relationships he has fostered within NASA, and with our international and commercial partners, have made the International Space Station a model for the incredible achievements possible through global cooperation. I thank Kirk for his service to America's space program. I am confident Joel's leadership of this program will continue to expand the role of the space station as a national asset for exploration, science, and commercial use."  

Montalbano has served as deputy program manager since 2012. Kenneth Todd will continue as deputy program manager.

Prior to becoming deputy program manager, Montalbano was the director of NASA's Human Space Flight Program in Russia from 2008 to 2012. He was a NASA flight director from 2000 to 2008. Montalbano began his career at NASA in January 1989, after earning a bachelor's degree in aerospace, aeronautical and astronautical engineering from Iowa State University, in Ames, Iowa.

Montalbano has earned multiple NASA awards, including the Distinguished Service and Exceptional Service medals. He also was awarded the Astronauts' Silver Snoopy Award and the American Astronomical Society's Advancement of International Cooperation Award.

"The International Space Station is a cornerstone of world human spaceflight, forging global partnerships and proving that permanent human residency in space is possible," said Mark Geyer, director of NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, which is home to the space station program office. "Kirk's leadership has been instrumental in those achievements. His service to NASA has guided the station to mark 20 years of permanent occupation this year. We wish him well."

Shireman has been program manager since 2015, during which time the space station expanded its role as a unique microgravity laboratory, hosting more than 2,800 research investigations from researchers in 108 countries and areas, and returning benefits to Americans on Earth through its role as the an official U.S. national laboratory. During his tenure, the program broadened support for commercial and marketing opportunities, private astronaut missions, commercial modules and in-space manufacturing to enable a robust low-Earth orbit economy. Under his leadership, NASA partners SpaceX and Northrop Grumman completed more than 30 commercial resupply missions, and SpaceX launched the first commercial crew test flight to the station. Shireman joined NASA in 1985.

"It has been the honor of a lifetime to have worked through the development of the International Space Station from a fledgling facility to a world-class laboratory," Shireman said. "The International Space Station will continue to expand and thrive in the years ahead, laying the groundwork for future explorers moving forward to the Moon, improving life on Earth, and opening up low-Earth orbit commercial activity and growing a robust economy there. These fantastic, dedicated people together with our international partners have been the highlight of my professional career. I truly believe ISS has earned a place in history as the most complex human engineering achievement of all time."

For almost 20 years, humans have lived and worked continuously aboard the International Space Station, advancing scientific knowledge and demonstrating new technologies, making research breakthroughs not possible on Earth that will enable long-duration human and robotic exploration into deep space. Under this unique international partnership, 239 people from 19 countries have visited the station.

Согласно опубликованной информации, Монталбано в качестве исполняющего обязанности сменит на посту руководителя программы полетов к МКС Кирка Ширмана, который возглавлял ее с 2015 года.

"Кирк посвятил 35 лет своей карьеры развитию и улучшению пилотируемых полетов, всегда придерживаясь принципов сотрудничества, - указала Лидерс в своем заявлении. - Отношения, которые он выстроил как внутри NASA, так и с нашими международными и коммерческими партнерами, сделали МКС примером невероятных достижений, которые возможны лишь в условиях глобального сотрудничества".

"Я уверена, что руководство Джоэла этой программой позволит космической станции и дальше предоставлять возможности для исследований, научных экспериментов и коммерческого использования", - подчеркнула замдиректора NASA по пилотируемым полетам. В заявлении указывается, что официально Монталбано займет пост исполняющего обязанности руководителя программы полетов к МКС 26 июня после того, как Ширман уйдет в отставку.

Монталбано с 2012 года занимал пост заместителя руководителя программы полетов к МКС. До этого в течение четырех лет - с 2008 по 2012 год - он был директором программы пилотируемых полетов NASA в России. Работу в NASA он начал в январе 1989 года.

The crew configured the Light Microscopy Module (LMM) in preparation for Microfluidics science runs. The crew also took photos of overall view of ACE Module capillaries and each capillary (three) for closer view during removal. Capillary-Driven Microfluidics in Space (Capillary Driven Microfluidics) examines the drawing of fluids into a tiny narrow tube in microgravity. Results may improve current mathematical models and understanding of microfluidic systems and improve fluid control in various devices. Diagnostic devices require separation of blood cells and plasma, which have different densities, and the absence of sedimentation and buoyancy-driven convection in microgravity improves the efficiency of this separation.

Advanced Combustion via Microgravity Experiments (ACME):

In support of the on-going s-Flame part 2 investigation, the crew replaced C2H4, He, and O2 gas bottles in preparation for upcoming test point runs. The ACME experiment series being performed in the CIR includes five independent studies of gaseous flames. The primary goals of ACME are to improve fuel efficiency and reduce pollutant production in routine fuel combustion activities on Earth. Its secondary goal is to improve spacecraft fire prevention through innovative research focused on materials flammability.

The crew performed the JEM Airlock depress in preparation of the KABER deployer and slide table transfer to the outside of the JEM airlock for the deployment of the REDEYE-2 satellite. The RED-EYE program develops and demonstrates technologies which increase the utility of low-cost microsatellites using the KABER Micro Satellite Deployer attached to the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator (SPDM).

Bigelow Expandable Activity Module (BEAM) Ingress:

Today the crew ingressed BEAM to retrieve charcoal filters stowed within the module. In an effort to reduce the benzene level in the atmosphere, charcoal only filters will be installed in Node 1. The charcoal filters will be swapped out with the current Charcoal HEPA Integrated Particle Scrubber (CHIPS). This swap will address the concern that over time the charcoal portion of the CHIPS filter has absorbed benzene and other compounds could now potentially push the benzene off the filters contributing to the elevated benzene level.

H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV)9 Rack Transfers:

Today the crew transferred ExPRESS Rack-11B (ER11B) and the European Drawer Rack 2 (EDR2) from HTV9 to the ISS. Prior to the transfers, the crew moved the Light Ions Detector so the hardware was not in the translation path of the rack transfers in the Columbus module. The ER11B rack was relocated from HTV9A2 to COL1O2. Before the EDR2 rack could be relocated to its final location, the European Transport Carrier (ETC) rack was relocated from COL1D4 to HTV9A2. EDR2 was then relocated from HTVF2 to COL1D4.

Extravehicular Activity (EVA) Tool Configuration:

In preparation for the S6 Battery EVA next week, the crew completed the initial configuration of tools required for the EVA. Spread across several days, today was the first of several EVA tool configurations the crew will perform prior to the EVA. The first EVA in the pair is scheduled for Friday, June 26 while the second planned EVA is scheduled on Wednesday, July 1.
