Russian Spacewalkers Wish Happy Birthday to First Spacewalker Alexei Leonov

At the start of today's spacewalk, cosmonauts Oleg Kononenko (left) and Alexey Ovchinin commemorated Russia's first spacewalker Alexei Leonov, who turns 85 on Thursday, with signs attached to their Orlan spacesuits (see translations below).

Shortly after beginning their spacewalk, Expedition 59 Commander Oleg Kononenko and Flight Engineer Alexey Ovchinin of the Russian space agency Roscosmos recorded birthday greetings for the first person to spacewalk, Russian cosmonaut Alexei Leonov. Leonov's 85th birthday is tomorrow, Thursday, May 30.

On 18 March, 1965, Leonov became the first person to leave a spacecraft in a spacesuit to conduct a spacewalk, exiting the capsule during the Voskhod 2 mission for a 12-minute spacewalk.

Kononenko and Ovchinin also added signs to the backs of their Orlon spacesuits to honor the first spacewalker. Kononenko's suit with the red stripes bears a sign that says "1st spacewalker", and the sign on Ovchinin's suit with the blue stripes says, "Happy birthday, Alexei Arkhipovich," Leonov's family name.

Космонавты забрали провисевшее десять лет в открытом космосе полотенце

МОСКВА, 29 мая – РИА Новости. Российские космонавты Олег Кононенко и Алексей Овчинин в ходе работы в открытом космосе вне графика забрали полотенце, которое провисело на внешней стороне станции десять лет, трансляция внекорабельной деятельности идет на сайте "Роскосмоса".

"По циклограмме эта операция была запланирована где-то в середине, но космонавты видимо, решили, что им проще выполнить ее сейчас, по ходу", - сообщили в трансляции.

Полотенце изначально предназначалось для протирки скафандров от загрязнений во время работы в космосе. Его оставил один из российских космонавтов около десяти лет назад. Кононенко с Овчининым убрали полотенце в специальный контейнер. Его вернут на Землю и передадут специалистам для изучения.

Выход начался в 18.42 мск 29 мая. В космосе Кононенко и Овчинину предстоит установить дополнительные поручни, почистить иллюминаторы модуля "Поиск", взять пробы-мазки в поверхности станции и выкинуть отработавшие измерительные блоки эксперимента "Обстановка" (проводится для исследования взаимодействия сверхбольших космических аппаратов с ионосферой).

Now removing the IMPAKT experiment, installed in Aug 2017. There are a lot of experiments which sit outside ISS for several years to see how different materials deteriorate or not, or to measure the space debris hit rate

Another experiment to be removed is called Vinoslivost, which has had several pieces exposed between 2012 and 2016.
