US EVA-53: In other news, today's spacewalk has been revised due to problems with one of the lithium-ion batteries installed last week; Hague will disconnect that battery and loosen bolts holding it and a battery charge controller in place

US EVA-53: After the EVA, flight controllers will remove the battery and BCDU using the lab's robot arm and re-install two older nickel-hydrogen batteries to restore that power channel to normal operation; additional clean up work will be done during the 4/8 EVA

NASA astronauts Nick Hague and Christina Koch have begun the second spacewalk in a week to complete the installation of new batteries to upgrade the International Space Station's  power capability.

The duo from the Expedition 59 crew switched their spacesuits to battery power at 7:42 a.m. EDT to begin the estimated six-and-a-half hour spacewalk.

Watch the spacewalk on NASA TV and on the agency's website.

This is the 215th spacewalk in support of space station assembly and maintenance. Hague is extravehicular crew member 1 (EV 1), wearing the suit with red stripes and helmet camera #20. Koch is extravehicular crew member 2 (EV 2), wearing the suit without stripes and helmet camera #18.

This is the second battery replacement spacewalk in the past week, continuing work Hague and Anne McClain performed March 22 to install adapter plates and complete electrical connections for three of six new lithium-ion batteries for the station's port truss. The batteries store power generated by the station's solar arrays to provide power to the microgravity laboratory when the station is not in sunlight as it circles Earth during orbital night.

One of those new lithium ion batteries has not been successfully holding a charge, so as part of today's spacewalk, Hague will begin preparations for robotic operators to replace the new battery that is not working with the two old batteries, ensuring optimal power supply at the space station. Meanwhile, Koch will prepare the worksite for the delivery of the next six new lithium ion batteries that will arrive to the station aboard a Japanese H-II Transfer Vehicle later this year to upgrade a third set of the solar arrays.

Hague is in spacesuit 3006 and Koch in 3008. Their first task is to take an Adjustable Grapple Bar from the airlock to External Stowage Platform 2.

The AGB is in place. Next stop is "P4", one of the segments of the ISS truss that holds the solar panels. The rest of the spacewalk involves work at the P4's Integrated Electronics Assembly (IEA) which supports solar panels 2A and 4A.

Last week's spacewalk saw replacement of the batteries for solar array 4A . This time they are doing the 2A ones.

6 мин. назад

On Mar 26-27 the robot arms were used to remove 5 of the 6 old batteries from 2A and install the three new ones. Now the astronauts will install three 'adapter plates' in the empty slots, connect up the new batteries, and move the remaining old battery onto an adapter plate.

US EVA-53: The astronauts have mounted an adjustable grapple bar on a storage platform for future use; Hague is moving out the inboard battery box on the left side of the station's power truss; Koch will join him shortly to begin mounting battery adapter plates

In this pic, at the right we see the golden solar arrays and below them a white radiator panel, attached to the P4 truss. In center top, the EP7 with Koch working on its right side; below is the see-through part of the truss, the joint that lets P4 rotate rel to P1 (at left)

One of the new batteries installed last week , Li-ion battery 0006 in slot 3 of the P4 4A IEA, has failed, so some additional work will be needed in the coming weeks to swap old batteries back in.

The astronauts now have adapter plates 13 and 14 removed from EP7 slots E and F, and are taking them to P4 for installation.

Adapter plate 14 (F) now installed in slot 6. Here you see adapter plate 13 (E) floating in foreground attached to Hague's suit.

US EVA-53: Elapsed time: 2 hours; the first of three battery adapter plates is now in place; Hague and Koch are running about a half hour ahead of schedule

EVA-53: Plate F is installed. D and E to go. 30 mins ahead of the timeline. Nick confirms he still has all his fingers during glove checks.

Next step for the spacewalkers is to take old NiH battery 0064 from slot 2 and put it on the new adapter plate in slot 4. This will free up slot 2 for the final, third, adapter plate.

It's a spacewalk, so the traditional dodgy bolt is in play. It wouldn't be a proper spacewalk if there wasn't a troublesome bolt or a sticky quick disconnect. #Rules

Battery 0064 now on its adapter plate. The astronauts now on their way to retrieve adapter plate 12 from slot D on the EP7; they will install it in slot 2 of P4 IEA 2A, the hole left by that just-transferred battery 0064.

Nice shot of Koch working at the EP, with Hague's legs (with red stripe) in the background. Note the "15" on the SAFER backpack on Koch's suit. (Hague is using SAFER 13. One project in my todo list is to go back through Shuttle EVA vids to catalog which SAFERs used on each EVA)
