The reins of the International Space Station were passed from NASA's Drew Feustel to Alexander Gerst of ESA (European Space Agency) during a ceremony on the orbital outpost on Oct. 3. Feustel is returning to Earth Oct. 4 with his Expedition 56 crewmates, Ricky Arnold of NASA and Oleg Artemyev of Roscosmos in the Soyuz MS-08 spacecraft for a landing on the steppe of Kazakhstan to complete a six and a half month mission. Gerst remains on the station as commander of Expedition 57 along with Flight Engineers Serena Aunon-Chancellor of NASA and Sergey Prokopyev of Roscosmos.

Expedition 56 crew members including NASA astronauts Drew Feustel, Ricky Arnold, and Serena Auñón-Chancellor, and European Space Agency astronaut Alexander Gerst embark upon a tennis match in space aboard the International Space Station.

Commander Drew Feustel commented on the match saying, "Our match in space was pretty challenging due to the fact that we are in a microgravity environment. We did have a net, but the rules allowed the ball to go over or under the net. Also, there was no requirement for us to stay on the ground, so to speak, so we had the freedom to play on the walls, ceiling, or floor. The game space was a bit cramped so we could not really smack the ball without making it unplayable for our opponents. Also, we did not observe a service or base line or any lines for that matter. We just did not have them. We made a lot of modifications, including to the racquets."

Трое членов экипажа МКС вернутся на Землю в День запуска первого спутника

МОСКВА, 4 октября. /ТАСС/. Три члена экипажа длительной экспедиции вернутся в четверг с Международной космической станции (МКС) на Землю в спускаемой капсуле космического корабля "Союз МС-08". Об этом сообщили ТАСС в российском Центре управления полетами (ЦУП).

Экспедиция возвращается в День Космических войск, который отмечают 4 октября в честь запуска в 1957 году первого искусственного спутника Земли.

"Спускаемая капсула пилотируемого корабля "Союз МС-08" с экипажем длительной экспедиции МКС-55/56 в составе космонавта Роскосмоса Олега Артемьева, астронавтов NASA Ричарда Арнольда и Эндрю Фойстела должна приземлиться в 14:45 мск недалеко от казахстанского города Джезказган", - сообщили ТАСС в ЦУП.

На МКС продолжит работу экипаж в составе космонавта Роскосмоса Сергея Прокопьева и астронавтов из США и Германии Серены Ауньон и Александера Герста. ...

План посадки

Космонавты перейдут со станции на борт "Союза МС-08" и закроют переходные люки в районе 07:55 - 08:20 мск. По данным Центра управления полетами, в 10:57 мск "Союз" должен отстыковаться от МКС.

Через несколько часов после отстыковки, примерно в 13:51 мск, "Союз" включит двигатели на торможение для схода с орбиты. Затем спускаемый аппарат с космонавтами войдет в атмосферу. В 14:45 мск капсула с космонавтами должна приземлиться в казахстанской степи.

Crews Switch Command as Trio Readies for Departure

A European astronaut has taken command of the International Space Station for the second time since 2009. Alexander Gerst of ESA (European Space Agency) accepted control of the orbital lab today from NASA astronaut and Expedition 56 Commander Drew Feustel.

Feustel is returning to Earth Thursday at 7:45 a.m. EDT with fellow crew members Ricky Arnold and Oleg Artemyev ending a 197-day stay in space. The trio will undock Thursday at 3:57 a.m. in their Soyuz MS-08 crew ship leaving behind German astronaut Gerst to begin his command with Expedition 57 Flight Engineers Serena Auñón-Chancellor and Sergey Prokopyev.

This is Gerst's second stay aboard the space station and his first command. He is the second European to command the outpost after Belgian astronaut Frank De Winne.

NASA TV's live coverage of the Expedition 56 departure activities begins Thursday at 12:30 a.m. when the homebound trio says goodbye and the Soyuz hatches close at 12:55 a.m. NASA TV will come back on air at 3:30 a.m. for the undocking and then return at 6:30 a.m. for the deorbit burn and landing coverage.
