Binary Colloidal Alloy Test – Cohesive Sedimentation (BCAT-CS):

The crew replaced all four SB-800 flash batteries with new AA batteries; they then verified the camera focus and alignment with manual images. Recent reports from the BCAT team indicate the pixel brightness in the downlinked images is higher for the ISS samples compared to ground samples. This is possibly due to more spherical aggregates as they form in microgravity. The brightness may need to be corrected in future images. BCAT-CS focuses on the study of forces between particles that cluster together by using sediments of quartz and clay particles. Conducting the research in the microgravity environment of the ISS makes it possible to separate the forces acting on the particles over a short range (adhesive forces) versus those acting over a long range (cohesive forces). The quartz/clay system is commonly found in a wide variety of environmental settings (such as rivers, lakes, and oceans) and plays an important role in technological efforts related to deep-sea hydrocarbon drilling and carbon dioxide sequestration.

Human Research Facility Portable Computer (HRF PC):

The crew attempted to perform the HRF PC software updates today, but encountered issues connecting to the network. Some troubleshooting was performed to verify the cause of the connection issues, the hardware was then returned to the original configuration. The HRF PCs are used to install and execute software that supports HRF experiments. They are also used to control equipment; to collect and store data, crew notes, and equipment notes; and to provide uplink and downlink capabilities.

JAXA Protein Crystallization Growth (JAXA LT PCG):

The crew completed the transfer of two sets of JAXA LTPCG Samples from the HTV/ICE Box on HTV-7 to the Freezer-Refrigerator Of STirling cycle (FROST). The objective of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency Protein Crystallization Growth (JAXA LT PCG) investigation is to grow high quality protein crystals in microgravity to determine protein structures in detail. The structures are used to develop pharmaceutical drugs in order to explore the mystery of our lives.

Japanese Experiment Module Airlock (JEMAL) Operations:

The crew installed the Multi-Purpose Experiment Platform (MPEP) Adapter Plate and JEMAL Slide Table Passive Capture Mechanism in preparation for the upcoming JEM Small Satellite Orbital Deployer 10 (J-SSOD) installation on Monday. The J-SSOD is a unique satellite launcher, handled by the Japanese Experiment Module Remote Manipulator System (JEMRMS), which provides containment and deployment mechanisms for several individual small satellites. Once the J-SSOD is installed on the MPEP by crewmembers, it's passed through the JEM airlock for retrieval, positioning and deployment by the JEMRMS.

HII Transfer Vehicle (HTV)-7 Cargo Transfer:

The crew completed 11 hours 30 minutes of HTV-7 Cargo transfer operations today. The crew completed enough cargo operations today and will be able to move forward with the rack transfers currently scheduled for Monday. Ground specialists estimate it will take the crew a total of 15 hours to complete the first message.

Москва. 1 октября. INTERFAX.RU - Российские космонавты в 2019 году четыре раза выйдут в открытый космос. Об этом сообщил "Интерфаксу" источник в ракетно-космической отрасли.

"Перед российскими космонавтами в 2019 году стоят масштабные задачи. Только плановых выходов в открытый космос по программе внекорабельной деятельности планируется четыре", - сказал источник.

При этом основная нагрузка придется на вторую половину года. "Лишь один выход запланирован в мае, следующий в августе и два в декабре", - сказал источник.

Кроме того, в 2019 году на МКС стартуют три российских пилотируемых корабля. "Запуски российских кораблей "Союз МС" с номерами 12-15 планируются соответственно на 5 апреля, 24 июля и 8 октября", - сказал источник.

Также запланированы три запуска космических грузовиков "Прогресс". "Транспортный грузовой корабль "Прогресс МС-11" стартует к МКС с "Байконура" 8 февраля, "Прогресс МС-12" 5 июня и "Прогресс МС-13" 4 декабря", - сказал он.

October will be a busy month as a pair of crews get ready to swap places on the International Space Station followed by a pair of spacewalks. Also, Japan's HTV-7 resupply ship is open for business and the Expedition 56 crew has begun unloading its science and supplies.

Station commander Drew Feustel is preparing to return to Earth Thursday with two of his crewmates despite a busy schedule of science and maintenance aboard the orbital lab. Cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev is packing the Soyuz MS-08 spacecraft today that he will pilot back to Earth flanked by Feustel and NASA astronaut Ricky Arnold. The trio is due to land in Kazakhstan at 7:45 a.m. after 197 days in space.

Expedition 57 starts when the Soyuz MS-08 crew ship undocks Thursday at 3:57 a.m. EDT. Staying behind are Alexander Gerst of ESA (European Space Agency) who will command the station with Flight Engineers Serena Auñón-Chancellor and Sergey Prokopyev until a new pair of crewmates join the following week.

NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Soyuz Commander Alexey Ovchinin will blast off Oct. 11 at 4:40 a.m. aboard the Soyuz MS-10 crew ship and take a six hour ride to their new home in space. The duo is in Kazakhstan at the Baikonur Cosmodrome launch site making final preparations for their 187 day mission.

The station is being replenished today as the crew begins offloading cargo from the HTV-7 resupply ship from JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency). Robotics controllers will soon unload new lithion-ion batteries packed inside HTV-7 and install them on the truss structure to upgrade the station's power systems. A pair of spacewalks are planned before the end of the month to complete the battery connections.

Functional Immune:

The crew performed saliva collections as part of the Functional Immune experiment. Functional Immune analyzes blood and saliva samples to determine the changes taking place in crewmembers' immune systems during flight. The changes in the immune system are also compared with crewmembers' self-reported health information. Results are expected to provide new insight into the possible health risks of long-duration space travel, including future missions to Mars, asteroids, or other distant destinations.

Freezer-Refrigerator Of STirling cycle (FROST):

Today the crew replaced the failed FROST2 controller with new hardware that arrived on HTV-7. FROST is a Stirling cooler that is able to maintain temperatures under -70ºC. FROST2 will be used to support JAXA's Low Temperature Protein Crystallization Growth (LT-PCG) investigation.

Sally Ride Earth Knowledge Acquired by Middle Schools (EarthKAM):

Shutdown and stow of mission 63 was completed today. As of the final report, 28,438 students from 34 countries had signed up to request images and more than 8,000 images had been downlinked. EarthKAM allows thousands of students to photograph and examine Earth from a space crew's perspective. Using the Internet, the students control a special digital camera mounted on-board the ISS. This enables them to photograph the Earth's coastlines, mountain ranges and other geographic items of interest from the unique vantage point of space. The EarthKAM team then posts these photographs on the Internet for viewing by the public and participating classrooms around the world.

Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) 3003 Radio Troubleshooting:

Last Friday, EMU 3003 experienced an unexpected loss of EMU data while on the primary (PRI) radio. Today the crew configured the Ultra High Frequency (UHF)-2 radio for EVA communication and performed audio checks on EMU 3003 in conjunction with an ullage dump; while initial comm checks were nominal, and the ground received nominal data from the suit, they did not receive EDAR data as expected. After switching back and forth between alternate (ALT) and PRI radios, ground teams were able to isolate part of last week's failure signature to a data timeout when switching between radios. At this time, however, experts remain unable to explain why data was initially lost during last week's activity. Additional meetings are scheduled to discuss the results of today's troubleshooting and the forward plan.

Nitrogen/Oxygen Recharge System (NORS) Nitrogen (N2) Transfer Terminate:

The crew reconfigured the ISS N2 system and terminated the N2 transfer from the NORS tank to the High Pressure Gas Tank. The crew then removed the empty NORS tank and stowed it in preparation for return on a future flight.

Space Station Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS) Operations:

Friday night, the Robotics Ground Controllers extracted the External Platform (EP) from HTV-7 and installed it on the Mobile Base System (MBS) Payload/Orbit Replaceable Unit (ORU) Accommodation (POA). Next, they walked SSRMS off from Node2 Power Data Grapple Fixture (PDGF) onto Mobile Base System (MBS) PDGF4. When performing the base change, data was collected to capture the rigidization tension on both Latching End Effectors (LEEs). They then unstowed the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator (SPDM) from the Lab PDGF, completing initial operations to configure the MSS for the HTV-7 Battery Remove & Replace operations scheduled in mid-October. Tonight, Robotics Ground Controllers will be performing a Mobile Transporter (MT) translation to Worksite (WS)7.

A NASA astronaut will swap command of the International Space Station with a European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Wednesday at 10:10 a.m. live on NASA TV. Expedition 56 Commander Drew Feustel will be handing the station "keys" over to German astronaut Alexander Gerst during the traditional change of command ceremony.

Expedition 57 officially starts Thursday at 3:57 a.m. EDT when Feustel and Flight Engineer Ricky Arnold undock in the Soyuz MS-08 spacecraft commanded by cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev. Gerst, ESA's second astronaut to command the station, is remaining onboard to lead Expedition 57 Flight Engineers Serena Auñón-Chancellor and Sergey Prokopyev. The homebound trio will parachute to a landing in Kazakhstan at 7:45 a.m. (5:45 p.m. Kazakhstan time) just two orbits after undocking and 197 days in space.

Astronaut Nick Hague from NASA's astronaut class of 2014 and veteran station cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin will be the next crew to blast off to the space station. The duo will launch Oct. 11 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome and take a six hour ride to their new home in space.

Amidst the crew departure activities today the station residents also worked space science and lab maintenance. Auñón-Chancellor worked on botany research inside the Plant Habitat located in the Columbus lab module. Gerst worked on hardware for the mobiPV study that is researching ways to increase productivity between astronauts and mission controllers. Departing astronauts Arnold and Feustel cleaned up their crew quarters.

BREMEN, Germany — NASA's partners in the International Space Station are showing a growing interest in extending the station's operations beyond 2024 regardless of NASA initiatives to end direct funding of the station around that time.

During an Oct. 1 press conference at the 69th International Astronautical Congress (IAC) here, representatives of three ISS partner agencies said they were open to extending the station's operations to 2028 or 2030 in order to maximize the investment they've made in the facility as a platform for research and preparation for exploration activities beyond Earth orbit.

Jan Woerner, director general of the European Space Agency, said the issue could come up at the next triennial meeting of the ministers of ESA's member nations, scheduled for late 2019. "At the ministerial meeting next year, the ministerial council, I will propose to go on with ISS as well as the lunar Gateway," he said. "I believe that we will go on."

At a separate briefing Oct. 2, Woerner emphasized the use of the station as a research platform and encouraged greater commercial activities there. "I believe we should use the ISS as long as feasible," he said. "I always thought 2024 was the end, but now I learned it is 2028, and yesterday I learned it's 2030. So, I will try to convince the ESA member states that ESA should be a partner in the future." However, he noted that ESA could defer the decision on a post-2024 ISS extension until its following ministerial meeting in 2022.

Hiroshi Yamakawa, president of the Japanese space agency JAXA, also emphasized the importance of making the most of the station. "I'd like to make the most of the present ISS," he said. "We have to maximize the output of the ISS. Whenever the deadline comes to the ISS, we would like to participate in the ISS and maximize output."

He added, though, that there was not a pressing need for Japan to decide on an ISS extension. "JAXA is requesting budgets annually, so I think in that sense JAXA is quite flexible."

Dmitry Loskutov, head of international relations at the Russian state space corporation Roscosmos, said Russia already expected an extension. "We anticipate the continued functioning until 2028 or 2030," he said.

That extension, he said, would be a subject of upcoming discussions between Dmitry Rogozin, head of Roscosmos, and NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine when they meet at the Baikonur Cosmodrome around the Oct. 11 launch of a Soyuz spacecraft to the station. It will also come up at a conference in Moscow in November marking the 20th anniversary of the launch of the first ISS segment, Zarya, attended by the ISS partners.

Evgeny Mikrin, general designer at RSC Energia, also endorsed an ISS extension. "I think we really should continue ISS utilization up until 2030" to maximize its utilization, he said, speaking through an interpreter during an IAC panel discussion Oct. 1. He stated that Russia still planned to launch three modules to its segment of the ISS in the coming years to expand its capabilities.

Bridenstine, at the heads-of-agencies press conference Oct. 1, alluded to legislation introduced in both the House and Senate that contain provisions to authorize an extension of the ISS until 2030. That language stems from congressional criticism to plans by NASA in its 2019 budget proposal to end direct ISS funding in 2025 as part of an initiative to enhance commercialization of low Earth orbit.

"The vision that we have for low Earth orbit in general is a vision for commercialization," Bridenstine said, with the private sector eventually taking over operations of space stations or similar facilities in LEO and with NASA as one of potentially many customers.

"The president's budget request was very clear that we would end direct funding for the ISS in 2025. To be clear, that doesn't mean the ISS will be over," he said, citing as one option an international consortium of companies taking over the station. "But it is also true that while I do support the commercialization of low Earth orbit, Congress doesn't always agree with me and Congress doesn't always agree with the president, so what gets put into law could be very different from what our objectives are."

На Международной космической станции (МКС) завершается работа 56-й длительной экспедиции. Члены российско-американского экипажа транспортного пилотируемого корабля (ТПК) «Союз МС-08» космонавт Роскосмоса Олег Артемьев, астронавты NASA Эндрю Фойстел и Ричард Арнольд готовятся к возвращению на Землю.

В настоящее время в соответствии с планом полёта осуществляется укладка возвращаемых грузов в спускаемый аппарат ТПК «Союз МС-08», проводятся бортовые тренировки экипажа и проверки основных систем корабля.

По предварительным данным службы баллистико-навигационного обеспечения Центра управления полётами (ЦУП) расстыковка корабля «Союз МС-08» с МКС планируется 4 октября 2018 года в 10 час. 57 мин. 30 сек. мск.

Продолжительность пребывания в космическом полёте экипажа экспедиции МКС-55/56 составит 197 суток (выведение на заданную орбиту транспортного пилотируемого корабля состоялось 21 марта 2018 года).

После расстыковки ТПК «Союз МС-08» с Международной космической станцией и до прибытия на борт МКС участников следующей экспедиции работу на орбите продолжит экипаж в составе космонавта Сергея Прокопьева (Роскосмос), астронавта Серины Ауньён-Чэнселлор (NASA) и астронавта Александра Герста (ESA).

Приземление спускаемого аппарата корабля «Союз МС-08» ожидается в 14 час. 45 мин. мск в 146 км юго-восточнее города Жезказган в Казахстане.

У астронавтов МКС возникли проблемы со скафандром для выхода в космос

Москва. 3 октября. INTERFAX.RU - У астронавтов на Международной космической станции (МКС) возникли проблемы с одним из скафандров для выхода в открытый космос, починить его пока не удалось, он будет заменен.

Как сообщил "Интерфаксу" источник в ракетно-космической отрасли, поврежденный скафандр должен был использоваться для выхода в открытый космос в конце октября.

"Диагностированы неполадки с передачей скафандром телеметрической информации. Устранить неисправность на орбите пока не удается. NASA приняло решение использовать для выхода в открытый космос один из запасных скафандров", - сказал собеседник агентства.

Однако, по его словам, астронавты не оставляют надежд самостоятельно починить неисправный скафандр. "Потребуется время для того чтобы разобраться с причинами неисправности и выработать методику ремонта. Астронавты могут не успеть устранить неисправность до выхода в открытый космос 19 октября. Поэтому решено использовать запасной", - сказал источник.

Как сообщалось, астронавтам НАСА и ЕКА Нику Хейгу и Александру Герсту предстоит дважды до конца года выйти в открытый космос - 19 и 25 октября для замены аккумуляторных батарей в системе электропитания американского сегмента МКС. Затем 15 ноября в открытый космос выйдут россияне Сергей Прокопьев и Алексея Овчинин для инспекции "Союза МС-09", в бытовом отсеке которого было обнаружено отверстие.
