Anton Shkaplerov, Scott Tingle and Norishige Kanai closed the hatches between their Soyuz MS-07 spaceship and the space station's Rassvet module at 2:02 a.m. EDT (0602 GMT).

The homeward-bound crew worked together over the last couple of hours to power up the Soyuz, activate the craft's systems, remove docking clamps, depressurize the vestibule between the capsule and station, and don their Sokol spacesuits. Undocking is set for 5:16 a.m. EDT (0916 GMT).

The trio also conducted leak checks and tests before the upcoming departure.

Shkaplerov, Tingle and Kanai are closing out 168 days in orbit after launching Dec. 17 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The three-man crew will ride back to Earth inside the space capsule they launched inside.

Shkaplerov, the outgoing commander of the station's Expedition 55 crew, handed over command of the complex to Expedition 56 commander Drew Feustel, a U.S. astronaut, in a ceremony Friday.

Feustel will remain on the station with his two crewmates, NASA astronaut Ricky Arnold and Russian cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev, until early October.

Three fresh crew members are set to blast off Wednesday, June 6, to raise the station's crew size back to a full staff of six.
