NASA Johnson

Опубликовано: 15 мая 2018 г.

Orbital ATK's Cygnus spacecraft is scheduled to launch its ninth contracted cargo resupply mission to the space station no earlier than May 20. Science and research delivered by the spacecraft includes a test of centuries-old sextant navigation and forward-thinking work advancing the orbiting lab's ability to support cutting-edge molecular research and its commercial capabilities. Also aboard will be the Cold Atom Lab (CAL), a facility to create a spot ten billion times colder than the vacuum of space, which could help answer some big questions in modern physics. The International Commercial Experiment, or ICE Cubes Service, tests and commissions the first European commercial system to increase access to this unique lab.

NASA Goddard

Опубликовано: 15 мая 2018 г.

Although it was only designed to last three months, the tiny CubeSat known as IceCube has been orbiting Earth for a full year, collecting data on a hard-to-study type of cloud. In that time, IceCube has created a global map of these ice clouds around the planet, which could someday help improve models and forecasts.

The stunning beauty and fragility of our atmosphere is best revealed at dawn, when the sun gently illuminates towering clouds on the distant horizon.

NASA astronaut Ricky Arnold is pictured inside a U.S. spacesuit for a fit check verification ahead of a pair of spacewalks.

NASA Television has begun coverage of today's spacewalk, as Expedition 55Flight Engineers Drew Feustel and Ricky Arnold of NASA work outside the International Space Station for approximately 6.5 hours. The spacewalk is scheduled to begin at 8:10 a.m. EST.

The objective of today's spacewalk will be to move a component called a Pump Flow Control Subassembly (PFCS) from a spare parts platform on the station's truss "backbone" to the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator (Dextre) robotic arm. The PFCS drives and controls the flow of ammonia through the exterior portions of the station's cooling system. Robotics controllers on Earth will use Canadarm2 and Dextre to perform final installation on the port-side truss for checkout.
