Additionally, Blue Origin needs to fly its New Glenn rocket in order to identify where the vehicle has margin. Sources have indicated that the payload capacity of the current iteration of New Glenn is closer to 25 metric tons than its advertised mass of 45 tons. This is not uncommon for new launch vehicles, and the company will be able to use real-world performance data to refine the vehicle's hardware and software for future flights. Still, those improvements can only be made after a launch occurs, when data is collected and analyzed.

The FAA has approved the launch license for Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket! According to NOTAMs released today, launch is targeted for NET January 6th at 06:00 UTC, pending a successful static fire. For the 1st flight, New Glenn will carry the DarkSky-1 Blue Ring flight system.

Well, all we have left to do is mate our encapsulated payload...and then LAUNCH! Congrats to the many Blue folks on today's test. Big day for our seven #BE4 engines, simultaneously firing for the first time for 24 seconds. Get this – a single BE-4 turbopump can fit in the backseat of a car. When all seven pump fuel and oxygen from the BE-4's common shaft, they produce enough horsepower to propel two Nimitz-class aircraft carriers at full tilt. The launch pad is the harshest environment for a vehicle, experiencing intense shaking from full engine thrust across the entire spectrum. To mitigate this, our water tower, one of the tallest in the world at 353 feet, plays a crucial role—storing water that is piped into the flame deflector, the launch table, and across the launch pad deck, providing thermal protection, and dampening as much acoustic energy as possible during liftoff. Our water deluge system expels around 400,000 gal/min during launch, with a good portion quickly turning into steam. (And a cool extra photo!)

New Glenn Launch Targeting No Earlier Than January 10
New Glenn's inaugural mission (NG-1) is targeting no earlier than Friday, January 10, from Launch Complex 36 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida. The three-hour launch window opens at 1 a.m. EST (0600 UTC). NG-1 is our first National Security Space Launch certification flight.

The payload is our Blue Ring Pathfinder. It will test Blue Ring's core flight, ground systems, and operational capabilities as part of the Defense Innovation Unit's (DIU) Orbital Logistics prototype effort. 
Our key objective is to reach orbit safely. We know landing the booster on our first try offshore in the Atlantic is ambitious—but we're going for it.
"This is our first flight and we've prepared rigorously for it," said Jarrett Jones, SVP, New Glenn. "But no amount of ground testing or mission simulations are a replacement for flying this rocket. It's time to fly. No matter what happens, we'll learn, refine, and apply that knowledge to our next launch."

Pointy end up! New Glenn is vertical at LC-36 in Florida. Just need the sea to settle down a bit. Some context on our 1/12 target launch date—our objective is to reach orbit. Anything beyond that is a bonus. Landing our booster offshore is ambitious—but we're going for it.  No matter what, we will learn a lot.
