The first wisps of vapor are visible from the launch pad as SpaceX prepares for a static test fire of the Falcon 9's nine Merlin first stage engines.

The strongback structure at pad 40 has opened the cradle that supports the rocket and is moving to an angle of around 1.5 degrees from the Falcon 9 in preparation for ignition. It will be moved back into place soon after the test is complete.

The Falcon 9 has ignited its first stage engines at launch complex 40 for its static fire prior to tomorrow's planned launch of the 15th batch of Starlink internet satellites. We'll await confirmation from SpaceX on the outcome of the test.

Following today's static fire, SpaceX has tweeted that it is targeting 12:14 p.m. EDT (1614 GMT) tomorrow for the next Starlink launch. The tweet cautions that the weather forecast is only 50-50 for acceptable conditions for launch due to thick cloud layers and cumulus clouds. There is also a high risk of weather problems for the drone ship landing in the Atlantic.

STARLINK MISSION

SpaceX is targeting Thursday, October 22 at 12:14 p.m. EDT, 16:14 UTC, for its fifteenth Starlink mission, which will launch 60 Starlink satellites to orbit. Falcon 9 will lift off from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. There is a backup opportunity available on Friday, October 23 at 11:53 a.m. EDT, 15:53 UTC.

Falcon 9's first stage previously supported the GPS III Space Vehicle 03 mission in June 2020 and a Starlink mission in September 2020. Following stage separation, SpaceX will land Falcon 9's first stage on the "Just Read the Instructions" droneship, which will be stationed in the Atlantic Ocean. You can watch the launch webcast live starting about 15 minutes before liftoff.
