Preparations are underway for Arianespace's upcoming Vega and Ariane 5 missions



A pair of important arrivals this week - one by air, the other by sea - marked an acceleration of preparations at Europe's Spaceport for Arianespace's next two missions, to be performed from French Guiana with its lightweight Vega and heavy-lift Ariane 5 launch vehicles.

These parallel arrivals involved personnel who will conduct the first Vega "rideshare" mission, scheduled for mid-June to orbit 53 small satellite payloads; and Ariane 5 launch vehicle components for a three-passenger flight planned for liftoff this summer.

... main launcher components for the Ariane 5 flight were being unloaded from the MN Toucan, one of two roll-on/roll-off sea-going ships operated for Arianespace, which docked at Paricabo Port near Kourou. After unloading, the components were to be taken by road to the Ariane 5's ELA-3 launch complex - also situated on the Spaceport's Kourou side.

Launch activities in French Guiana had been suspended mid-March because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and were gradually resumed - carried out in strict compliance with health rules published by the Prefect of French Guiana, as well as the French CNES space agency and the Guiana Space Center.

Readying Ariane 5's three-satellite payload

For Arianespace's initial Ariane 5 mission following the resumption of operational activity at the Spaceport, its heavy-lift launcher will carry three payloads to geostationary transfer orbit: the Galaxy 30 and BSAT-4b telecommunications satellites, along with a Mission Extension Vehicle (MEV).

Riding in Ariane 5's upper payload position will be Galaxy 30, produced by Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems (NGIS). This is the first spacecraft built under Intelsat's North American satellite fleet replacement program and highlights the operator's continued focus on C-band communication technologies.

To be deployed as a Galaxy 30 "piggyback" payload is Northrop Grumman's second Mission Extension Vehicle (MEV-2) - a servicing spacecraft that docks with an existing satellite in orbit to provide life-prolonging propulsion and attitude control. After deployment by Ariane 5, MEV-2 will service the Intelsat 10-02 satellite, which was launched in 2004.

Flight VA253's other passenger on Ariane 5 - BSAT-4b - was built by Maxar Technologies for Japan's Broadcasting Satellite System Corporation (B-SAT) as a back-up to BSAT-4a, launched by Arianespace in 2017. BSAT-4b uses Maxar Technologies' 1300 Class platform and carries Ku-band transponders.

During operations at Félix Eboué Airport, Galaxy 30 and Mission Extension Vehicle-2 (MEV-2) are unloaded from the cargo jetliner that transported them to French Guiana for Arianespace's Flight VA253 launch with Ariane 5.

The two payloads that will ride together on Arianespace's upcoming Ariane 5 heavy-lift mission have arrived at the Spaceport in French Guiana to begin their pre-launch processing.

Delivered aboard an Antonov An-125 cargo jetliner last weekend were the Galaxy 30 relay satellite for Intelsat, along with the Mission Extension Vehicle-2 (MEV-2) - a pioneering satellite servicing spacecraft designed to dock with orbiting geostationary satellites whose fuel has nearly depleted.

They were unloaded from the aircraft at Félix Eboué Airport near the capital city of Cayenne for transfer by road to the Spaceport.

Two Northrop Grumman payloads for Flight VA253

Galaxy 30 and MEV-2 will be lofted on the next Ariane 5 mission - designated Flight VA253 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system - along with the BSAT-4b satellite for Maxar. Liftoff of Flight VA253 is scheduled for the end of July.

The Galaxy 30 spacecraft was built by Northrop Grumman, while MEV-2 was supplied by Space Logistics LLC, a wholly owned Northrop Grumman subsidiary. They will be stacked together to ride in the upper payload position on Ariane 5 for its mission to geostationary transfer orbit.

The Mission Extension Vehicle-2 will be deployed by Ariane 5 for its rendezvous and docking with the Intelsat 1002 satellite, which is scheduled for early 2021. Intelsat 1002 was launched in 2004 by Arianespace, and the MEV-2 will use its own thrusters and fuel supply to control the satellite's orbit, thereby extending its useful lifetime.

Multi-band relay duties for Galaxy 30

Galaxy 30 is based on Northrop Grumman's flight-proven GEOStar-2 platform. As the 11th Northrop Grumman satellite purchased by Intelsat, it is the first in Intelsat's Galaxy fleet replacement program, dedicated to video distribution and broadcast services. With a C-band payload, this spacecraft will be integral to the U.S. C-band spectrum transition plan, on which Intelsat is collaborating with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission.

Additionally, Galaxy 30 has Ku- and Ka-band payloads to support broadband applications, as well as the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) hosted payload for the Federal Aviation Administration. WAAS is an extremely accurate navigation system for civil aviation.

Payload preparations for Arianespace's next mission have moved into full swing with arrival of the third satellite to be lofted on a heavy-lift Ariane 5 flight from the Spaceport in French Guiana on July 28.

Delivered yesterday by a chartered An-124 cargo jetliner is the BSAT-4b broadcasting satellite, which will be orbited by Arianespace as part of a turnkey contract with the Japanese operator B-SAT and the spacecraft manufacturer, Maxar. The jetliner touched down at Félix Eboué Airport near the capital city of Cayenne, where BSAT-4b was unloaded for transfer by road to the Spaceport.

BSAT-4b will ride in Ariane 5's lower payload position, joining the launch's other two passengers: the Galaxy 30 relay satellite, and the Mission Extension Vehicle-2 (MEV-2) - both of which are supplied by Northrop Grumman, and will serve the operational needs of Intelsat.

The July 28 liftoff is designated Flight VA253 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system, marking the 253rd mission of an Ariane launch vehicle. It will be Arianespace's fifth mission of 2020 and the third this year to geostationary transfer orbit.

The next flight of Europe's heavy-lift Ariane 5 rocket, set for July 28 from French Guiana, will carry a record payload of three multi-ton satellites toward geostationary orbit, including a pair of U.S.-built commercial communications payloads and Northrop Grumman's second robotic satellite servicing spacecraft.

The Ariane 5 is one of the most powerful rockets in the world, typically carrying two large satellites at a time on missions toward geostationary orbit more than 22,000 miles (nearly 36,000 kilometers) over the equator. The Ariane 5 launches with a carbon fiber structure inside its payload fairing, giving the rocket upper and lower berths inside the nose shroud.

But the Ariane 5's next mission will loft three spacecraft, each with a launch weight of several tons. Two of the satellites will fit together inside the larger upper section of the Ariane 5 payload fairing, while the third spacecraft will ride below in the lower berth.

The end user for two of the satellites is Intelsat, which operates one of the largest fleets of commercial geostationary communications satellites. The owner of the other payload is B-SAT, a Japanese communications satellite operator.

Intelsat's Galaxy 30 video broadcast satellite and Northrop Grumman's second Mission Extension Vehicle arrived at Félix Eboué Airport airport near Cayenne, French Guiana, on June 27 aboard an Antonov An-124 cargo plane. Galaxy 30 and the MEV-2 spacecraft flew to French Guiana from Washington Dulles International Airport, near the Northrop Grumman factory where the satellites were built.

The BSAT-4b television broadcast satellite arrived in French Guiana on July 1 aboard another Antonov An-124 cargo transport, after flying from an airport near Maxar's satellite manufacturing facility in Palo Alto, California, with a stopover in Orlando, Florida.

The three satellites were trucked from the airport near Cayenne to the Guiana Space Center, located in Kourou, French Guiana, for unpacking, testing and fueling.

The 7,760-pound (3,520-kilogram) BSAT-4b satellite will then be mounted on top of the Ariane 5 rocket's upper stage inside the launcher's final assembly building at the European-run spaceport in South America. Galaxy 30 and MEV-2 will be connected together and encapsulated inside the Ariane 5's payload shroud, then the upper composite will be lowered over BSAT-4b before the Ariane 5 rolls out to the launch pad on the day before liftoff.

The Ariane 5 is scheduled for launch July 28 during a 46-minute window opening at 5:29 p.m. EDT (2129 GMT; 6:29 p.m. French Guiana time). The mission will mark the 109th flight of an Ariane 5 rocket since 1996, and the third Ariane 5 flight this year.

It will be the first launch from French Guiana since February. Arianespace, which oversees Ariane 5, Soyuz and Vega launches from the Guiana Space Center, suspended launch operations at the spaceport in March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Teams resumed regular work at the launch site in May, and Arianespace aimed to launch a light-class Vega rocket last month with a cluster of 53 small satellites. But persistent high-altitude winds kept the mission grounded, and Arianespace decided to recharge batteries on the rocket and on-board its satellite payloads.

The recharging activity on the satellites was expected to take several weeks to complete. Teams planned to remove the Vega rocket's payload composite containing the satellites and transport it back to a clean room facility at the space center, where technicians could open the payload fairing and access the 53 spacecraft.
Arianespace said last week the Vega launch would be delayed to Aug. 17, and the Ariane 5 launch would proceed July 28.

The Ariane 5 will fly to the east from the Guiana Space Center, and officials do not expect it to be as susceptible to high-altitude wind limits as the Vega launch on a northerly trajectory. The launcher will release the Galaxy 30, MEV-2 and BSAT-4b satellites into an elliptical transfer orbit, and the spacecraft will use their own engines to circularize their orbits more than 22,000 miles over the equator.

MEV-2 is Northrop Grumman's second autonomous satellite servicing spacecraft, following launch of the MEV-1 mission in October 2019 aboard a Russian Proton rocket.

The MEV-1 mission docked with the Intelsat 901 in February, locking onto the satellite after accomplishing the first docking between two commercial satellites, and the first-ever linkup between two objects in geostationary orbit. Intelsat 901 was launched in 2001 and was running low on fuel. The Mission Extension Vehicle is designed to take over attitude control of a client satellite and extend its useful life.

Intelsat purchased life-extension services for two of its satellites from Space Logistics, a subsidiary of Northrop Grumman that manages the commercial robotic servicing program. Intelsat 901 resumed commercial communications service in April.

The MEV-2 mission will perform a similar docking and mission extension service beginning in early 2021 for the Intelsat 10002 communications satellite, which launched in 2004.

An Intelsat communications satellite will accompany MEV-2 into orbit. Named Galaxy 30, the Northrop Grumman-built satellite will provide commercial video and television broadcast services across the United States.

Galaxy 30 will also provide broadband connectivity, and it hosts a Wide Area Augmentation System payload for the Federal Aviation Administration to support navigation services for civil aviation in the United States, including precise altitude and position data for airplanes departing and arriving at busy airports.

The BSAT-4b satellite will be positioned over the Asia-Pacific region, and it will broadcast direct-to-home 8K and 4K ultra-high-definition television services for the Japanese operator B-SAT. The new satellite will be a backup for BSAT-4a, which launched in 2017.

The two Northrop Grumman-built passengers for Arianespace's upcoming Ariane 5 flight are undergoing pre-launch checkout at the Spaceport in preparation for this mission's July 28 liftoff.

Being processed in the Spaceport's S5 payload processing facility are Galaxy 30 (G-30) and the Mission Extension Vehicle-2 (MEV-2) - both of which are slated to serve Intelsat, which operates the world's largest integrated satellite and terrestrial network.

Galaxy 30 and MEV-2 to be stacked on Ariane 5

They will be integrated in a stacked configuration on Ariane 5, riding in the launch vehicle's upper payload position for release first during the flight to geostationary transfer orbit. This mission is designated Flight VA253 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system, signifying the 253rd launch since the European Ariane family began operation in 1979.

G-30 is the first in Intelsat's Galaxy fleet replacement program. Its C-band relay capacity will be integral to the U.S. C-band spectrum transition plan that Intelsat is collaborating on with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission. Additionally, G-30 is to provide Ku- and Ka-band relay capability in support of broadband applications, and it carries the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) hosted payload for the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration - offering extremely accurate navigation for civil aviation.

Based on Northrop Grumman's flight-proven GEOStar-2 platform, G-30 is the 11th Northrop Grumman-built satellite purchased by Intelsat.

MEV-2 will extend the Intelsat 1002 satellite's lifetime

The MEV-2 passenger for Flight VA253 was supplied by Space Logistics LLC, a wholly owned Northrop Grumman subsidiary, and is designed to dock with geostationary satellites whose fuel has nearly depleted, thereby extending their useful lifetimes. After its deployment by Ariane 5, MEV-2 will rendezvous and dock in early 2021 with the Intelsat 1002 (IS-1002) satellite, originally launched in 2004. The Mission Extension Vehicle is to utilize its own thrusters and fuel supply to control the IS-1002 satellite's orbit.

BSAT-4b begins its pre-flight checkout for Arianespace's upcoming Ariane 5 launch

The BSAT-4b broadcasting satellite, which will be orbited by Arianespace as part of a turnkey contract between the Japanese operator B-SAT and the satellite manufacturer, Maxar, is being readied for a July 28 liftoff from the Spaceport in French Guiana on Ariane 5.


Moving through a transfer corridor within the Spaceport's S5 payload processing facility, the BSAT-4b broadcasting satellite is moved from the building's S5C large preparation hall to the S5A fueling and integration hall.

This 3,530-kg. relay platform is undergoing its preparations in the Spaceport's S5 payload processing facility, and its upcoming liftoff will mark the latest Ariane mission for B-SAT - Japan's leading broadcasting satellite operator - as well as the continuation of Arianespace's long-established launch services relationship with the Japanese satellite broadcasting sector.

B-SAT ordered the BSAT-4b satellite from Maxar in 2018 to ensure 4K/8K ultra-high definition direct-to-home video distribution across the Japanese region. It will serve as a back-up geostationary satellite for BSAT-4a, which also was built by Maxar and launched by Arianespace in September 2017.

Equipped with 24 Ku-band transponders, BSAT-4b was designed for a service lifetime of 15 years or longer and is based on Maxar's popular 1300-class spacecraft bus for commercial communications satellites.

On this month's Ariane 5 mission to geostationary transfer orbit, designated Flight VA253 in Arianespace's launcher family numbering system, BSAT-4b will be integrated in the launch vehicle's lower payload position, joining the other two passengers: the Galaxy 30 relay satellite (G-30); and the Mission Extension Vehicle-2 (MEV-2) - both of which are supplied by Northrop Grumman, and will serve the operational needs of Intelsat.

Arianespace to launch three satellites towards Geostationary Orbit on July 28

Final step in Ariane 5 latest performance improvement program decided in 2016, Flight VA253 brings the total increase in payload capacity to 300 kg since then.

The two of the three companies whose satellites are being launched are both long-standing customers - Intelsat for 37 years and B-SAT for 23 years - clearly proving the excellence of Arianespace's service offering and long-term customer relations.

The third, Northrop Grumman's wholly-owned subsidiary, SpaceLogistics LLC, is a first-time customer to Arianespace.

Since the reopening of the Guiana Space Center in French Guiana, teams from Arianespace and ArianeGroup have focused on preparing this very innovative mission under the best possible conditions.

Arianespace's next Ariane 5 launch from the Guiana Space Center (CSG) in Kourou, French Guiana, is scheduled for Tuesday, July 28, in a launch window from 21:29 UTC to 22:15 UTC.

Satellites to be placed in orbit will serve Japanese B-SAT and operators Intelsat and Northrop Grumman's SpaceLogistics LLC. BSAT-4b was built by the American company Maxar Technologies and will be used to broadcast Ultra-High-Definition (UHD, 4K and 8K) direct-to-home television broadcasting across Japan, in conjunction with its twin, BSAT-4a, also built by Maxar and launched by Arianespace in 2017.

The other two satellites on this mission were built by the American company Northrop Grumman: the Galaxy 30 UHD video distribution/broadcast and broadband satellite, built for the global network operator, Intelsat, will cover North America, and MEV-2 (Mission Extension Vehicle), a highly innovative satellite servicing vehicle designed to dock to satellites in orbit to provide life extension services. The first customer for MEV-2 will be the Intelsat 10-02 satellite, in geostationary orbit since 2004. MEV-2 will provide five years of service to this satellite.

This mission will use the Ariane 5 heavy-lift launcher, developed and manufactured by ArianeGroup, which has increased its payload capacity by 85 kg for this flight, thanks to the introduction of a new vehicle equipment bay (VEB), bringing total payload capacity into geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) to 10,200 kg. Since kicking off a continuous improvement program for Ariane 5 in 2016, ArianeGroup has increased this launcher's payload capacity by 300 kg for the benefit of Arianespace. Their customers will continue to benefit from this enhanced performance on Ariane 5 for the rest of its missions.

The Ariane 5 launcher is a joint European government-industry program. Arianespace is responsible for marketing and operating Ariane 5 launches from the Guiana Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana, with support from the French space agency CNES and the European Space Agency (ESA). ArianeGroup is in charge of all design and production, from initial design studies, upgrades and manufacturing, to the supply of data and software for each mission. Its specific responsibilities include the production of equipment, structures and propulsion systems, integration of the different stages, and integration of the complete launcher in French Guiana.

Payload integration for Arianespace Flight VA253 is highlighted with these photos, taken in the upper level of the Spaceport's Ariane 5 Final Assembly Building. The upper composite - composed of Galaxy 30, MEV-2 and the payload fairing - was then positioned over and installed atop BSAT-4b (center and right).

The heavy-lift Ariane 5 for Arianespace's fifth mission of 2020 is now complete following integration of its three passengers at the Spaceport in French Guiana.

During activity in Ariane 5's Final Assembly Building, the upper payload component - containing Galaxy 30 (G-30) and the Mission Extension Vehicle-2 (MEV-2) in a stacked configuration - was lowered into position over BSAT-4b, which is installed atop the launcher's central core.

This step clears the way for final checkout, which will enable the launch readiness review to be conducted on July 24, followed by Ariane 5's rollout to the Spaceport's ELA-3 launch zone the following Monday. Liftoff is set for the evening of Tuesday, July 28 to deploy the triple payload into geostationary transfer orbit.

The upcoming mission is designated Flight VA253 in Arianespace's numbering system. Total payload lift performance is an estimated 10,468 kg.


G-30: a milestone spacecraft

G-30 is the first satellite in Intelsat's Galaxy fleet replacement program. Its C-band relay capacity will be integral to the U.S. C-band spectrum transition plan that Intelsat is collaborating on with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission.

Additionally, G-30 is to provide Ku- and Ka-band relay capability in support of broadband applications, and it carries the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) hosted payload for the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration - offering extremely accurate navigation for civil aviation.

Based on Northrop Grumman's flight-proven GEOStar-2 platform, G-30 is the 11th Northrop Grumman-built satellite purchased by Intelsat.


MEV-2: new-generation satellite servicing

The MEV-2 passenger for Flight VA253 was supplied by SpaceLogistics LLC, a wholly owned Northrop Grumman subsidiary, and is designed to dock with geostationary satellites whose fuel has nearly depleted, thereby extending their useful lifetimes.

After its deployment by Ariane 5, MEV-2 will rendezvous and dock in early 2021 with the Intelsat 10-02 (IS 10-02) satellite, originally launched in 2004. The Mission Extension Vehicle is to utilize its own thrusters and fuel supply to control the IS 10-02 satellite's orbit.


BSAT-4b: reinforcing reliability

Japanese operator B-SAT ordered the BSAT-4b satellite from Maxar in 2018 to ensure 4K/8K ultra-high definition direct-to-home video distribution across the Japanese region. It will serve as a back-up geostationary satellite for BSAT-4a, which also was built by Maxar and launched by Arianespace in September 2017.

Equipped with 24 Ku-band transponders, BSAT-4b was designed for a service lifetime of 15 years or longer and is based on Maxar's popular 1300-class spacecraft bus for commercial communications satellites.

To enable additional technical checks required under the fairing and the Ariane dual launch system (SYLDA), the final phase of launch preparation operations for the 253rd Ariane flight (VA253) has not been initiated by Arianespace.

The soonest possible launch date for this mission is Friday, July 31 at:

Arianespace's fifth mission of 2020 has been given the "green light" for liftoff following today's launch readiness review, which was conducted at the Spaceport in French Guiana.

This milestone confirmed that the Ariane 5 launch vehicle and its three passengers - Galaxy 30 (G-30), the Mission Extension Vehicle-2 (MEV-2) and BSAT-4b - are flight-ready, along with the Spaceport's infrastructure and the network of downrange tracking stations.

With approval granted, Ariane 5 also is cleared for rollout on July 30 from its Final Assembly Building to the ELA-3 launch zone. Liftoff will occur on July 31 during a 46-min. launch window opening at 6:30 p.m. local time in French Guiana.

Flight VA253: the sequence for success

Ariane 5 will deliver a total payload lift performance of approximately 10,468 kg. on the mission to geostationary transfer orbit (GTO), which is designated Flight VA253. This total factors in the three passengers, plus the workhorse vehicle's dual-payload deployment system and integration hardware.

G-30 and MEV-2 - both produced by Northrop Grumman to serve the operational needs of Intelsat - are stacked together in the upper position of Ariane 5's payload configuration. G-30 will be deployed first during the 47-minute flight sequence, followed by MEV-2.

To be released last as the mission's lower passenger, BSAT-4b is being launched by Arianespace as part of a turnkey contract between the Japanese operator B-SAT and the satellite manufacturer, Maxar.

The Ariane 5 for Arianespace Flight VA253 has rolled out to the launch zone at Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana, clearing the way for tomorrow's mission with a trio of spacecraft: Galaxy 30 (G-30), Mission Extension Vehicle-2 (MEV-2) and BSAT-4b.

Riding atop a mobile launch table, the heavy-lift launcher completed its transfer from the Spaceport's Final Assembly Building - where payload integration occurred - to the dedicated ELA-3 launch complex.

ArianeGroup is Ariane 5's prime contractor, delivering the fully-assembled launch vehicle for operation by Arianespace.

Geostationary transfer orbit delivery

With today's rollout completed, the final countdown will begin for liftoff on July 31 at the start of a 46-min. launch window that opens at 6:30 p.m. local time in French Guiana (21:30 UTC).

For this 109th launch of an Ariane 5, the lift performance is an estimated 10,468 kg., which factors in the G-30, MEV-2 and BSAT-4b payloads, plus the dispenser system and integration hardware.

The mission will use an Ariane 5 launcher, which has increased its payload capacity by 85 kg. for this flight, thanks to the introduction of a new vehicle equipment bay (VEB) - bringing total payload capacity into geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) to 10,200 kg. Since kicking off a continuous improvement program for Ariane 5 in 2016, ArianeGroup has increased this launcher's payload capacity by 300 kg. for the benefit of Arianespace.

Payloads for operation by Intelsat and B-SAT

MEV-2 is to be separated from Ariane 5 in Flight VA253's second deployment step. This highly innovative satellite servicing vehicle, which is built by Northrop Grumman's wholly-owned company, SpaceLogistics LLC, is designed to dock with satellites in orbit, offering life extension services. The initial spacecraft target for MEV-2 is the Intelsat 10-02 satellite, which has been in geostationary orbit since 2004. MEV-2 will provide five years of life extension for this relay platform.

Completing Ariane 5's mission is the deployment of BSAT-4b, designed for Ultra-High-Definition (UHD, 4K and 8K) direct-to-home television broadcasting across Japan in conjunction with its twin, BSAT-4a - launched by Arianespace in 2017. Старт планируется осуществить в пятницу во временное окно с 23:30 до 00:16 по парижскому времени (с 00:30 до 01:16 1 августа мск).

Ракета-носитель выведет на орбиту аппарат MEV-2 (Mission Extension Vehicle) американской корпорации Northrop Grumman, предназначенный для продления сроков эксплуатации спутников. Он должен будет состыковаться со спутником связи Intelsat 10-02 на геостационарной орбите, который уже почти исчерпал свои запасы толпива для поддержания ориентации, и "дозаправить" его.

Ракета также выведет на геостационарную орбиту спутник Galaxy 30 компании Intelsat для расширения высокочастотного телевизионного покрытия территории США. Stephane Israel, CEO of Arianespace, says an issue with a sensor associated with the Ariane 5's first stage liquid hydrogen tank was the cause of today's launch scrub.

The Ariane 5's cryogenic propellant tanks will be drained in the coming hours as engineers examine the readings from the sensor. Assuming the sensor has a relatively simple fix, Arianespace could attempt launch again tomorrow.

Flight VA253: Launch postponed

Arianespace has postponed today's planned Ariane 5 launch from the Spaceport in French Guiana - designated Flight VA253 - after its countdown was halted during the final phase.

A new schedule of operations is to be defined. The new target launch date will be communicated at the end of this process.

The Ariane 5 and its three passengers - Galaxy 30 (G-30), Mission Extension Vehicle-2 (MEV-2) and BSAT-4b - have been placed in a safe standby mode.

"Предстартовый отсчет был остановлен из-за поступившего в последний момент "красного сигнала", - говорится в сообщении компании в "Твиттере".

По словам главы Arianespace Стефана Израэля, контрольные датчики зафиксировали проблему в одной из ступени ракеты-носителя.

Запуск планировался осуществить во временное окно, которое открывалось в 00:30 мск (в 23:30 по парижскому времени 31 июля).

Ракета-носитель должна была вывести на орбиту аппарат MEV-2 (Mission Extension Vehicle) американской корпорации Northrop Grumman, предназначенный для продления сроков эксплуатации спутников. Планировалась его стыковка со спутником связи Intelsat 10-02 на геостационарной орбите, который уже почти исчерпал свои запасы топлива для поддержания ориентации, и "дозаправить" его.

Ракета также должна была вывести на геостационарную орбиту перигеем 250 км и апогеем 35,7 тыс. км спутник Galaxy 30 компании Intelsat для расширения высокочастотного телевизионного покрытия территории США. На нем, кроме того, размещено оборудование Федеральной авиационной администрации США, предназначенное для совершенствования технического обслуживания полетов гражданской авиации.

Flight VA253: Update

The final countdown for Flight Ariane #253 (VA253) was halted at 2'14'' before liftoff during a first launch attempt on July 31 due to the unexpected behavior of a sensor inside the liquid hydrogen tank in the launcher's main cryogenic stage.

Ariane 5 is being transferred back to the Final Assembly Building (BAF), where a spare sensor will be set up and a new flight program uploaded to the launcher. These additional operations, and those that follow, will take several days. In the meantime, the Ariane 5 launch vehicle and its three spacecraft payloads are in stable and safe conditions.

With the schedule being firmed up, a new target launch date will be announced by Monday, August 3.
Arianespace is applying its standard procedures to maintain the highest level of reliability for the benefit of its customers.

The progress of operations currently underway at the Final Assembly Building has enabled August 14 to be envisioned as the launch date for Ariane Flight 253 (VA253), with the possibility of an optimization in the process for the mission to be performed one day earlier.

If the flight is on August 14, liftoff will occur as early as possible during the following launch window:

  • Between 5:33 p.m. and 6:20 p.m. Washington, D.C. time,
  • Between 6:33 p.m. and 7:20 p.m. Kourou, French Guiana time,
  • Between 21:33 and 22:20 Universal time (UTC),
  • Between 11:33 p.m. and 12:20 a.m. Paris time, in the night of August 14 to 15,
  • Between 06:33 a.m. and 07:20 a.m. Japan time, in the morning of August 15.

"Ход операций в цехе финальной сборки позволяет наметить запуск Ariane <...> на 14 августа", - говорится в сообщении.

Компания отмечает, что при определенных условиях старт может быть осуществлен на день раньше.

Изначально запуск должен был состояться 28 июля, однако его перенесли на 31 июля, обосновав необходимостью провести дополнительные технические проверки. 31 июля Ariane 5 вновь была снята со стартового стола и возвращена в сборочный цех из-за отказа датчика в баке с жидким водородом основной ступени ракеты.

Ракете предстоит вывести на орбиту спутник BSAT-4b, запускаемый для японского оператора связи B-SAT, и спутник Galaxy 30 для международного оператора Intelsat. Они будут использоваться для прямого высококачественного радио- и телевещания. В космос также отправится аппарат MEV-2.
